A girl I grew up with named her baby Hunter recently.

There's a guy that emails us from the American office at work called Chip. Can't take him seriously!

Had that once before as well - tourned out his actual name was Christopher, but for some reason he prefered "Chip".

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Did he have an English accent? He might be from Nottingham.

Can you imagine Gary Neville's dad(R.I.P.) when he was a kid in school?

    His first name was Neville.

This post probably doesn't really belong in this thread, but anyway....

I work with this girl whose surname is Curtin.
I've already fooled other people by telling them that this girl has a sister whose first name is Annette.

Since a lot of this thread is made up anyway I'd say it fits right in.

Comes from Shire Reeve, an overseer of serfs in post-Norman Conquest England.

    Odd name to choose, really.

I've come across this too (American rellies).
Its actually cause the guy is named after his Dad.
So instead of calling him John Junior after John Senior (for example)......the name is Chip, as in ' A Chip off the old block'.

    Kinda cute

Quite a sentiment from the parents.

That's a literary name I'll have you know. Respect.

I hope he (it is a he, right?) can live up to the high (heh) ideals and moral standards of Mr. H. S. Thompson.

Somebody who would clearly rather not have been pregnant in the first place (insert rant about archaic Irish laws here.)

I know a Terence. He hates it, but it seems to have be a 'family name' (his dad was also Terence), hence he got lumbered with it.

Is there a more judgemental thread than this one? Yes, some kids get lumbered with names they would prefer not to have - and others compound their grief by making a song and dance about it. What the hell? Show respect.

'Show respect' is almost always a pitiful excuse peddled by those deferring to institutions entirely undeserving of it.

Why should stupidity and/or vanity be 'respected' ?

In fairness, this is a pretty light hearted thread full of very subjective opinions. I might hate the name Gubnait or Dwayne but I'm not going to lambast the parents over 'stupidity' or 'vanity' because our tastes differ.

Mind you, then there's poor old 'Moon Unit', because no innocent baby deserves that.
