United to Newark or AA to JFK

Looking at travelling to New York next June/July with family (2 adult & 3 kids) with either United or American Airlines. The prices are similar @ €534 for United and €549 for AA. Aer Lingus is not an option as it is significantly more expensive. I am looking for opinions regarding which of these two airlines would be better with regard to service, aircraft, entertainment etc.
    Thanks.

I have flown both, although a few years back. Both were very poor compared to European airlines but it terms of splitting them, it was United (Comtinental when I flew).

United for me but in fairness they're both equally crap. Actually if probably fly American to go into JFK rather than Newark

Are aer lingus much better compared to both?

Yes but as above they can be expensive. I would connect in CDG, LHR or AMS rather than fly with some U.S. Airlines, cost and time permitting.

Have you tried Skyscanner and sites like that?

I flew American (to Philadelphia from Dublin) and found them absolutely fine, no huge difference from getting home (JFK to Dublin with Aer Lingus).

Where in New York are you staying? Newark can be much handier to get to/from Manhattan depending on where you are staying. I have flown United to Newark and have found them fine, no problems.

I am actually going to Connecticut and according to google maps our destination is 90 minutes from both airports.

One perk of flying to Newark is that your beside Jersey Gardens Mall. Have done that a couple of times and did a lot of my return shopping on the way to the airport -great discounts to be had there and your only 10 minutes by cab to the airport.

You are to early to book EI fares. Delta is also another option you can try and would be better than AA or UA.

Yes, have used skyscanner. Delta is €678 and Aer Lingus is €707. Hard to justify the additional cost when there is 5 of us going. We did fly Delta in 2013 and thought they were very good. Kids particularly liked the pizza and ice cream that was served an hour before landing in JFK!!!

I fly regularly with United, find them no worse than EI. They've improved the economy food offering this summer, incl free beer or wine with the meal. I'd recommend having your own headsets for the IFE, the ones they supply are crap.

Have you considered Boston? Depends where in Connecticut you're going, but flights into BOS are often cheaper than JFK/EWR and you don't have to deal with getting out of New York.

I develop Superior Solitaire when I'm not procrastinating on boards.ie.

I haven't flown American but from what I hear they do not have any in-flight entertainment, only the overhead TV's, and no power. It might not be significant to you though. Personally I like flying with United, but Delta is the best of the lot.

You would add at least three hours onto your journey to avoid flying directly with a US airline?

Aer Lingus are by far the worst carrier to the US from Ireland. Absolutely dreadful. Maybe some of the posters haven't flown in years or something but the whole experience screams "low cost budget airline".

In contrast Delta have significantly upgraded their experience in recent years. Avoid EI like the plague and run with Delta or AA. United are fine but Newark can be a pain if you have kids (just getting out of there).

Lol you are suggesting AA are better than EI, I think you are the one who hasn't flown in years!!!

Thanks for all the advice. Booked flights with United.

I flew 4 days ago on a multi airline itinerary that included EI, so take your defensive attitude elsewhere thanks :).

If I wasn't in a hurry and it was good value, yeah.

Anyone know how entertainment is on Delta? The official website said that entertainment has to be paid for onboard, but also says that only applies in some cases?

Probably have to pay on domestic flights, but I'm nearly sure you do not have to on TransAtlantic. Last time I flew Delta (two years ago at this stage) it was all free.

Free on international, great selection of movies, music etc, hands down best IFE across the pond from Dublin.

United are actually Ok these days, i flew them last week to newark
Their planes are small enough 757, but plenty of room
they have personal tvs, wifi on boards, plugs for laptops or phones on each seat and free booze. what more do you want!

ive also flown american on the dub to Philly route a few times over the last year and they use the 767 on that which is fine (no wifi) but on the JFK route they use the 757 which is not as good as United, no personal TVs etc.

id definitely choose united to newark over AA to jfk

if AA used the 767 on the jfk route then itd be much of a muchness really tho

Good choice with United. I love taking that flight out of Shannon (even Dublin is handy). It’s so convenient for me when I'm home. 10 mins from Shannon, clear immigration there and straight out the door in Newark, no messing around. My FiancÃ႒©e’s place is an hour south of the airport and even for parts of Manhattan, I find Newark much more convenient. I always get stuck in traffic getting out of JFK. I would certainly never go out of my way to connect with a nicer airline. Think of the disastrous queues at immigration stateside. They can be horrific! Clearing immigration in Ireland far outweighs the quality of flight in my opinion.

EI miles behind on IFE for econ TA flights. Delta better.

    Enjoy

Actually your previous post had no objective info.
Therefore as per boards.ie T&C's you need to back up your post. Otherwise it is airline bashing as per A&A forum rules.
Post your subjective views/experiences to give your previous posts some background. Your opinion is welcomed and encouraged but you have to back it up.
