Are Back Alarm Boxes Actually wired in to alarm system or electrical system?

I want to paint the back of my house, are bell boxes at the backs of houses usually hard wired into the house alarm or house electrics or are they just dummy boxes thrown up without any wires? If i try to remove will the alarms activate?

Normally they would be just an empty decoy box. If so it would be easy to remove and replace.
