Looking for opinions on which of these would be better - VW Passat Diesel Estate or Skoda Octavia Diesel Estate.

Also would it be better to consider a 2012 with higher mileage or a 2010 with lower ?

    Thanks in advance.

Passat is a class up on the Octavia and is a much nicer all round car. A superb estate is a Passat equivalent if you want space.

Can anyone tell me what the Bluemotion thing means in a VW Passat and what difference it makes ?

Also what does 140BHP mean ?

How would the Opel Insignia Diesel Estate stack up against a VW Passat also Diesel Estate ?

    Thanks in advance.

Bluemotion Technology is VW talk for start/stop function along with other technical jargon in regards to saving fuel and lowing emissions. Basically under the correct conditions the engine will cut out automatically when you are stopped in traffic and have the car in neutral. When you select gear and engage the clutch again the engine will start up and away you go. 140bhp is the power output of the engine. In the Passat the 2.0 litre TDi engine had 140bhp or a more powerful 170bhp version was also available.

Insignia is similar, basic 2.0 litre engine had 130bhp but there was also a 160bhp version. Insignia is a good car but they are not without their share of problems that most modern diesel cars have. Interior room is a bit tighter than in the Passat and tall passengers may have a problem with the lower roof line. Insignia engines imo are not as refined or as efficient as the VW engines but Insignias tend to be better equipped especially on base models.

    Thanks bazz26. That's a great explanation.

Would it be better to consider a 2012 with higher mileage or a 2010 with lower ? Particularly in a Passat.

I have a 2011 Passat Highline with 80k miles on it, find it a good comfortable car with good mpg etc.. I think once the seller can prove a service history on both cars you can get some level of comfort. But if you do go down that route of the high mile car, make sure that the dmf (dual mass flywheel) has been replaced if not try and get them to replace it before you take the car.

But this issue of the DMF will be common with all modern diesel engines.

Is there much of a difference in the spec between the two cars?

2010 Passat would be the B6 and a 2012 would be the B7. There aren't that many 2010 Irish Passat's around as they were in run out by then, and hard to get hold of.

Very little difference between the B6 & B7 models. Both should have full leather so probably go for whichever is in the best condition. Sometimes a high mileage one is the better one to go for, because the type of mileage it's done is the type of mileage a diesel should be doing, rather than lots of start/stop city driving on a low mileage car.

try both cars and see what you think firstly, then start to look at the facts of the one you enjoyed most. Both cars come from same family so will use similar parts. Main thing i always go for when searching for a new car is service history. Gives you peace of mind knowing what was done on the car and an indication on how well it was looked after.

I wouldn't spend the money on a Passat. I was in an Octavia when it came out in 2013 and wasn't blown away but would still buy one over a Passat.

They are not even in the same class. The Octavia is a rival to the Golf/Jetta, etc whereas the Superb is a rival to the Passat.
