Hi all. A friend has a 99 VW Transporter. Every morning for the last few days, it wont start on the key. It sounds to me like a immobilizer-type problem. It turns over no problem, it fires and then goes back to turning over. There is plenty of smoke so it seems the plugs are ok. He has to get it toed, but once it starts once on a tow, she'll fly all day, starting on the key any time after that. Any thoughts?

Could be a combination of weak battery and glow plugs gone.

Definitely not the batt, its turning over no problem. Could be the plugs, but I doubt it, there's plenty of smoke (ie unburnt heated diesel) every time he tries to start it.
