I enquired with the UPC Boards reps and they told me the estate I'm in (Burnaby Heights) is planned for end of 2016, so it may be a while yet before they get the whole town covered...

I guess they're working their way out from the town centre... 12 months+ seems a long time to do the whole town though, they seem to have done a few estates this week alone.

I asked the UPC rep in July about Rathdown Park, and he said end of 2015.

Shazerina, this is the link to the UPC reps on boards :-

Jeez you are keen! It's not even active so how would it be on their system?

Like the man says wait. 😀

Active by end of Sept. Not sure why people are insisting on asking some seat warmer in the UPC office when they engineers doing the work know more.

Not with UPC but got a letter from them today to say they will be replacing the cabling outside the house imminently. Oaklands area.

Currently with Eircom for phone & efibre broadband and SKY for tv so will be worth seeing what sort of service & price they offer for a package of all 3.

UPC have added cabling along the rooftops beside the guttering in Rathdown Park without my family's permission and possibly others as well.

Was there an existing cable & did you get a letter about it?

We have existing cable and there was a letter about works that would happen outside the house.

    There you go. Define "outside".

    Sneaky wording.

Although, I never understood why some refuse access and want to be left in the 1990s.

Apologies if this was answered in an earlier post (I did look, but am not sure) - with this new upcoming eFibre offering from UPC, is it in any way reliant on Eircom for lines etc, or is it 100% independent of Eircom ?

EFibre is a product offered by Eircom. Eircom Wholesale resell to providers like Vodafone, Sky, etc but not UPC.

This thread has been a mix of both now.

Regarding UPC coming in and renewing the cable, your neighbour may have rights for free and uninterrupted passage of services, be it telephone, ESB, water, drainage etc. It would be unfair to essentially cut off your neighbour when they've had this right for many years. You could very well put it to UPC but do you really want a fight with your neighbours?

the letter we got specifically said they would be putting new cable on the house, and then removing the old cable at a later date. The new cable is thicker, but they've done a neater job of running it (it's in ducting attached to the underside of the gutter, and between the houses they've properly anchored it into the wall - the old cable was just hanging).

I don't think UPC have any automatic right of access (unlike ESB & Eircom) - you can ask them to remove it altogether, they may make you some offer to try and avoid having to reroute the cable for the houses "downstream" of yours.

Apologies - I actually meant UPC fibre (not eFibre).

    Thanks !

UPC may reach VDSL exchange fed users before Eircom this is hilarious having used ADSL/VDSL from Eircom im with UPC the past year and there broadband is fantastic and is capable of 1gb they have being slowly increasing this as competition arises/consumer demand doesn't matter who provides the service as long as you are receiving decent speeds. i think VDSL isn't future proof Eircom ESB/Vodaphone FTTH & UPC is.

They've moved on so won't be able to ask. Quick google shows nothing. They only want you to register interest with no price information on their site. One result for Irish Times website says its a "premium product with a premium price attached"!! So no competitive pricing then when there's no competition on this scale of product!

FTTH 1GB is now available in the Wood :)

Have any photos of the ONT? Did they give you a new router?

    If it's 100mb then it's still vdsl. FTTH is being sold in 150, 300 & 1000mb speeds.

I know that but I thought they were installing the hardware for FTTH in Charlesland and later on changing the profiles.

The cab in the wood is ready to go with 1000mb speeds and you can order the product now. Upgrading to Fibre extreme requires the install of an ONT in the house, pretty much similar to when you first get FTTC installed, it requires a new main phone socket in the house.

I'm waiting until my next planned leave to upgrade from 100mb. The process between switching / upgrading products can take take up to a week and service on the existing fibre is cancelled before the new install so there is a small element of downtime involved plus the arranged install of the ONT in the house. The router is the F2000, a decent router I have found so far. (Using it on existing fibre connection) I find it has much better wireless options than the F1000, it also features long awaited Gig LAN ports.

I had no idea I need an ONT but maybe I do have it I'm not sure - it just looks like a normal lan/phone box on the wall - I think I only have the normal install with the F2000 router. Do you need to specifically ask for this when signing up?

You would be sure if you have one because they would need to do external work outside your house and inside.

Any update on Burnaby Heights just off the golf club? Last checked there was no fiber, and only "8mb" if you're very lucky. Checking the map, all the cabinates around it are live.

The ONT is only fitted when you sign up for Fibre to the home. For fibre to the cabinet, the socket in the house is replaced but with one that is very similar to your original phone socket. It has a built in filter so you don't need to use a filter on the phone line between the socket and the modem :)

So excuse me for asking this if it's already been answered somewhere in the previous 41 pages, but what's the deal with Redford Park?

I see from the link posted a few posts above that the closest cabinet (GRS1_047) is live and fibre-enabled, yet it doesn't seem to be available at my address in Redford Park. I'm currently lucky to get 8 mbs during the day, dropping to 1mb or less in the evening when the neighborhood Xboxes and netflicks boxes get turned on.

    Anyone know what's the deal?

I think it's been mentioned before that some houses in the estate are linked straight to the exchange rather than going via the cabinet.

Not all phone lines are connected to the cabinet - older lines are connected directly to the exchange. You can get eFibre on an exchange-fed line (since about March) but Redford is a long way from the exchange in Greystones and eFibre only works up to a certain distance.

FTTH (where they run the fibre directly into your house) is being rolled out in Greystones and is not affected by distance, but so far it's only available in Charlesland.

UPC are also upgrading their network in Greystones, which will allow up to 240Mb broadband - if you currently have cable-tv cables attached to your house you may benefit from this (not sure if they've started work in Redford yet).

There was an Eircom guy working in Redford Park recently near my house so I asked him if he know anything about future broadband plans for the estate. He said they they have come up with a "new method" for delivering higher bandwidth to the exchange fed customers and that he would be surprised if it wasn't rolled out before Christmas in Redford. The guy didn't know the details of what technology was being used as he is not part of the team currently working on the project.

Not sure how accurate (or true) this is but it did give me a glimmer of hope that I may get more than 0.02Mbit of upstream bandwidth soon.
