Does anyone have any info on Burnaby Heights? I've been waiting so long for it. Looking at the exchange map it seems like there are 2 exchanges that are active nearby but no change here.

It feels like everywhere in Greystones is sorted now except here.

there are huge swathes of Greystones not covered unfortunately. My assumption is that the they have completed the eFibre roll out for those premises where access to the local fibre street cabs are available - the rest of us have to wait for either additional cabs to be installed (no plans as far as I can see) or they upgrade the exchange for those directly connected. It could be another year at the least.

They have another cabinet planned for Rathdown Park and either have one in the Exchange or will be adding one there soon. By the time Eircom get off their backside for direct lines in Rathdown or other estates, ESB-Vodafone will be trailing in Greystones and possibly live before Eircom do any work on the civils.

I'm just 128m from the nearest live cabinet but still not available in my area

I've "100MB" from Eircom now. Paying €50 which includes "e-vision" TV and landline. The service is shocking. I get a max of 40MB download and 12MB upload despite hours spent on the phone with Eircom's "technical" staff.

One of, if not the, most frustrating experiences in "customer service" I have ever dealt with. I think I'm locked in for another year, then it's goodbye forever. The e-vision is pretty poor too in terms of usability and takes about 30-45 seconds to come on.

    Highly NOT recommended!

I agree that eircom are one of the worst companies I have ever had to deal with for customer services. Left them as soon as Possible.

there is a thread on poor performance for Eircom efibre users to certain sites at peak times that might be oof interest to you http://www.boards.ie/ttfthread/2057315815

How are you testing the speed? Using wireless/Wired? (On my iphone I only get max 40mb but on the wired laptop I get ~90)

How far are you from the Cabinet. The speeds that you get will drop off as the distance between the home and cabinet increase. For example on page 2 of this link http://www.swiftmanagedservices.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/FTTC-info.pdf

I'm about 400m from the eFibre cabinet and I get download speeds between 70 and 80 Mb/sec and upload speeds of around 15 Mb/sec.

Ye are making be jealous I'm only 120m from the efibre cabinet but it isn't available to me yet.

I get about 5m download and 1m upload

Thanks. That's the wired speed (i.e. ethernet cable direct to laptop) using Eircom speedtest. Only 20mb max to laptop on wireless.
I'm fairly close to a cabinet.

Engineers pulling fibre through Redford and Rathdown Park in anticipation of hooking up direct to exchange houses to fibre shortly.

Just spoke with them in the street.

Many of them? It sounds like good news.

I've noticed a few new Eircom duct covers around the place as well. E-VDSL is due to launch as a wholesale product this month.

Not sure why they would need to pull new fibre for E-VDSL though, the whole point is that the copper goes all the way back to the exchange.

If you meet the engineers again could you ask is it just Redford/Rathdown they looking or are there parts of Greystones as well?

As it is Eircom's broadband map indicates that Greystones eFibre roll is done which of course is total crap when probably 60% (a bit of guess) of the area still cannot get it.

According to the rules set out by Comreg, 40% is all they need to label it as complete.

they're putting a cab at the exchange to service direct-fed lines. anyone not currently served and within 2km of the exchange should be able to get VDSL once that is live (it's marked on the map, currently blue for "In Progress").

There are direct fed lines such as ourselves that are past the 2km range so we can't avail of a decent VDSL connection if they left it as is. They are probably sorting out the residents such as ourselves. Maybe they are gonna splice at the top of Rathdown park...if that is the route.

Is your internet speeds capped because you have E-vision? I think it might be

the only thing they can do for you is divert your line to a cab, or put in a new cab (don't think they have any more planned for Rathdown though).

    Route is as follows -

    Rathdown park,

Maintain copper from house to underground PT ducts in front of every two houses.

Disconnect copper from PT ducts to exchange and replace with fibre.

Effectively any house following this method would be direct fiber back exchange or possibly nearest cabinet.

Possibly much better speeds than current longer run of copper to central cabinet at top of Rathdown.

There is a second cabinet planned. See the wholesale website for the NGA map showing another one planned.

from the Eircom FTTH thread, the first 16 towns to get it will be
Cavan, Ennis, Carrigaline, Douglas, Letterkenny, Balbriggan, Sandyford, Tralee, Naas, Kilkenny, Drogheda, Castlebar, Belcarra, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo, Mullingar, Wexford and Greystones.

FTTH is Fibre to the Home which involves fully replacing the copper line into your house with fibre (as opposed to eFibre which still involves some copper).

This is launching as a product in August with speeds of 150M, 300M and 1G - the 1G product is likely to be only about €20 more expensive than standard broadband. (Greystones is also on the list of towns for the ESB/Vodafone FTTH rollout though it's not clear when that will launch).

    ^^^

Given many (most) of the residents can't even get access to the current fibre cabs I won't hold my breath. FTTH may (probably in my opinion) only end up being in the new estates where access to known duct works are available. Can't imagine them wanting to go to the expense of digging up roads and pathways to deliver the service.

Hmmm maybe Denis O'Brien could buy Eircom (for a shilling or two!) and sort it out.

they don't have to dig up anything - the fibre is already laid to the cabs and there are already ducts in place for the copper network (some of these may not be in great condition though).

I saw in Charlesland Wood the guys pulling fibre last week through the local ducting for the houses. So from what I guess happens it that when you order the service your line gets tapped onto immediately outside your house - if they run another piece of fiber I wouldn't know!.

The Comreg holdup that was preventing a lot of lines from getting eFibre was (mostly) resolved last week. Anyone waiting on eFibre should check again this week - my line is now showing as available.
