Which mid size Petrol to go for from these

Hi All

My wife is looking for a Petrol car, something mid sized that is comfortable and solid and won't give trouble for a few years. Her mileage doesn't warrant a Diesel and we use my car for longer trips. We want to keep the outlay small.
Obviously theres is a bit of a difference in price between the below but would anyone have strong opinions on one over the other ?

I'd take a corolla over a petrol vw of that vintage any day but I'd go for the previous model corolla. It's a nicer car than the model you posted imo.

That vw is engine is hopeless, desperately underpowered and stupidly thirsty as a result.

The corolla of that vintage is a pretty poor car all round. Low quality interior and very cheap paint for example.

The 1.6 in the Jetta is an FSI engine and is actually quite good. It's a nicer more solid car with a much better interior.

That Jetta is one of the 8 valve ones, the FSI were 6 speed. If you can get an FSI I'd agree totally - a nicer allrounder than that Corolla.

Look out for a Focus Ghia saloon too, nice engine if you get the manual and spec levels are good.

One of these would be a very good option if you want a something that is very reliable. These civics are excellent cars and a good alternative to a corolla.

That Corolla in the OP seems a bit funny - speedometer in MPH, yet it seems that model was not sold in the UK...

They look and feel a bit old these days though. Newer model is much more modern and not a huge amount more expensive:

Only 2 grand more expensive! The new model is more modern alright but there is nothing at all wrong with the older model. The old one has the d series engine too which is as close to unbreakable as you will get.
