That's the thing it couldn't. What do you think happens the minute you come into contact with the enemy? Lots of noise so if they aren't shouted at from day one they can't get used to the sudden stress of battle. You hardly think the enemy will give ya time to put on ear defenders...

I think the civilian population just got a shock of how the army really is. Everyone has this notion that the army is handy and not real. For years I've been listening to thar arguement and I know half the people saying it wouldn't last the first few weeks.

A while since we came into contact with the enemy though. Hopefully those brits don't come back!

That's where your wrong. The irish public is very ill informed or educated on its defence forces and history.
That statement is more common that you think

Presume not much one on one battle with the old bayonet though? Is it mainly peace keeping and making your presence felt on missions?

Its peace enforcing we do nowadays. Peace keeping was the old leb back in the 90s

Reg, can you explain the difference please?

The aim of argument, or of discussion, should not be victory, but progress. Joseph Joubert

The ultimate purpose of debate is not to produce consensus. It's to promote critical thinking.

Peace keeping is keeping the peace after a cease fire.

Peace enforcing is where we force two warring parties apart and create a ceasefire/ buffer zone

We have never lost a soldier to enemy fire but plenty to accidents

Edit...we lost a few to enemy fire in the leb in the 90s

I'd say some lads are more dangerous to themselves and others alright compared to the enemy from watching that programme.

Makes a man out of ya lads. Now ya know why ya dont take on soldiers as they will attack first as we are trained that way

I had to respond after seeing this.

I have 12 years experience in the military and retired nearly a decade. I have embedded experience with 3 different countries armed forces during active war zones, and this type of training on the TV was left behind by most advanced armies 20 years ago. Soldiers will not attack first! Soldiers in modern armies attack when there is no other alternative.

In the American armed forces, marines are trained to hold a gun and aim it, and be damn good at it. But there is a reason they are called grunts. And they are trained very similarly to what I saw on tv. Those men and women are forged into a one size fits all uniform, which has been identified as being of very little use in modern conflicts.

But alas..... I'm going to bed

What military were you a part of, would you be able to tell us? I found your post to be quite interesting there, and I don't usually post in here but was curious to hear more about it. I didn't see the programme on T.V tonight, but have been watching Homeland and 24 a lot today, so I have combat and espionage and terrorism on the brain (obviously not in the acting out sense, but you know what I mean). I was in hospital with someone who had been in the U.S military before and he said that in hindsight, they definitely did something to him emotionally and mentally that he didn't even notice at the time and that not everyone is able to come out the other end of it as the most stable.

Part of the irish defence forces. Currently 15+ years service.

Unfortunately this show has brought every "expert" and "couch warrior" to the forefront to give thier 2 cent. Liveline was full of them yesterday.

Anyways this discussion is not for a farming thread. Head over to the military forum.

So your saying if a soldier is cornered or attacked he won't retaliate???
They will try to talk it out maybe...what training did you receive.

So the army hasn't changed at all in 10 years ya reckon?. Why did you leave after only serving 12 years?

I've many trips overseas myself and served with many other militaries including our own and other SF.

Like I said before this isn't for the farming forum so I'm not going to drag it out and feed the trolls.

Have to laugh as everyone seems to be an expert on the irish military and military tactics ever since that show aired

whatever about the army, I wouldn't fancy being on either the LE Niamh or Eithne I think they are called, the ships looking for asylum seekers in the med. They seem to have come across a couple of horror stories

I unfortuneatly voiced my opinion on this subject in the Pub on Saturday night. I'm not very PC on the matter so I got a fair bollocking from a few of the girls in the group. Went back to talking about farming and the ****e weather very fast.

From talking to a few navy heads what is happening is this. The navy ships are patrolling off the coast of Syria or where ever. When they detect a boat a few miles offshore they intercept it, unload the people and carry them the 600 miles to Italy. It's a farce

It encourages people to get into crap boats as they know they only have to get a few miles out to sea
