Edited so it reads the positive way I meant for it to read!

    11:49

I'd tend to disagree somewhat.....I'm only doing this years marathon because it's been on my bucket list for some time. While I am quite enjoying the training program, probably because of all the good advice, encouragement and enthusiasm on this forum, come November I'll happily get back on my bike and never run again!! (Or very little anyway). Sometimes its about setting uncomfortable goals just to challenge the body and mind!!:) Not everyone's a natural runner!

100%. Its not something you have to do its something you look forward to doing. If its a chore or a drudgery then you've missed the point.

I knew I should've gone back to edit my post! Not sure why you think it was a negative one :P

So if I had edited it, this is what I would have added: I just thought it was funny and wanted to share because a) I woke up thinking about running and b) I wished it HAD been Wednesday!

I woke up thinking about running and b) I wished it HAD been Wednesday!

If you feel that way I'd make Tuesday a run day too - a short slow run can only help :)

I don't agree with this but every one is different. I found when I got back running it was a punishment for a while but I knew that would soon change as I got fitter. I wouldn't try a marathon or any race if I didn't get some joy from running. Are you running long?

    +1

If you don't like running, the marathon will be utter hell.
Take this from someone who does like running.

I think that we can all agree that it will be great 'fun' and 'tough' too....otherwise everyone would be able to run a Marathon.......we are soooo fit :D

Excellent, I really hope so. Move the family out this time so no man flu!
    What plan are you following?

I think you missed my point a little bit. I'm not finding the running punishing, I just said that I don't particularly mind if I don't run again after this marathon. Part of the challenge for me is setting a goal, selecting a suitable means to achieve that goal and go and do it. In this instance the goal is the marathon, this forum and training plan is the means to achieve it. I have a lot of background in triathlon (which I started as a way of learning to swim properly) up to half ironman distance, but cycling is my preferred sport, and I will return to that after the marathon.

I was just making the point to ultraman that it's not just runners that do marathons, some of us can just do crazy things every now and again!!

Ahem....that was really expensive permanent black marker no less....good Nike top ruined but worth it ;). People knew your name after you ran past them......he he.

I am following a plan in Irish Runner, very similar to a lot of others in that there are small runs during the week and one LSR at the weekend. I also joined a gym and I am swimming 2-3 times a week and using the cross trainer a little bit too as an alternative to some of the shorter runs (minding my dodgy ankle).

The plan is the same a last year time wise....Plan A is 3:59:59, Plan B is 4:15 and Plan C is not to end up in the First Aid hut on Roebuck Road....again:eek:

I find the same Kennyg, falling out of bed and slipping my feet straight into runners really messes with my run times. On race days or long run days, I get up and have breakfast at least 2 hours before I run and I'm fine but weekday runs before work are a little more difficult :)

Same here on long runs & race days, just mid-week earlies before work
a pain, have to fight my self to slow down.

A bit of a light note to contrast all the "punishment" talk.

You may have heard that Van the Man had his 70th birthday earlier this week. As a result I was listening to his classic hits all day yesterday and this morning, including "Brown Eyed Girl". You know at the very end of the song, where he repeats the chorus ("do you remember when // we used to sing // sha-la la la la") and he intersperses that with "bit by bit by bit by bit by bit".

At lunchtime, I went out for 8M easy, and I can proudly say, I have a new running mantra! It turns out that I can keep humming to myself "bit by bit by bit by bit by bit by bit" for 8 miles and probably a lot further. It's exactly the right rythm for my strides, such as they are. I was flying along! At easy pace, I hasten to add.

This was the most enjoyable run ever, just with a song in my head (obviously not using headphones). Thanks Van!

In the very unlikely case you don't know this song, it's here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfmkgQRmmeE. All-time classic favourite, 4th most played song on the radio in the US last year, not bad for an almost 50 years old.

So good to have you back. Your posts always have me fired up!

Thanks! I've felt really guilty all evening alright but tried to use the time wisely and did more food prep for the week and laid out my running gear for the week. I'm so sad :P

Yeah, will need to re-think my schedule. I might try and do a LSR some morning before work and see how that goes. I'm literally in shock at how quickly it's getting dark now.

Anyone who does this, do you find yourself shattered at work that day?
Hehe love the runners organisational ocd :)
A lsr is going to leave you pretty wrecked, work or no work. I generally factor in some horizontal-on-the-sofa-parenting on Sunday afternoons so Mrs Mc you're not alone! Can you rejig your schedule so you do it on your day off?

A tough-ish start to the week for me. After my 15 mile lsr on Sat, I rested on Sun. I did my 4 mile yesterday am & I found it tough. Legs were heavy & it felt like I was carrying a sack of spuds on my back. My stomach wasn't great either, which didn't help. Definitely one of those runs I was just glad to bank & move on.

Yesterday evening, I noticed a pain developing in the outside sole of my foot. Not a stabbing pain, more of dull ache. It was sore to walk on. It didn't feel so bad this am, so I did my 8 mile mid-week run. Legs didn't feel as heavy as yesterday, but after about 4 miles, that pain in the sole of my foot came back. Not so bad that I had to stop, but it was definitely on the higher-end of the "niggle scale". I ran on grass where I could & these seemed to keep it at bay. Something to keep an eye on.

Rest tomorrow, then I tackle my (pre-Electric Picnic) 16 mile lsr on Thurs night. Very apprehensive about that one so soon after the 15 mile lsr on Sat.

I just worked out that in the past 8 days, I've done more mileage in my runners than in my car (62km). What a weird statistic!
We should start up a weird and wonderful statistics post :)
Keep an eye on that foot and hopefully a rest at EP will help.

6 miles done at 6.20 this morning, getting.bit chiller & darker
In mornings. 59 mins, harder to get pacing exactly right in
    Mornings. But all went well.

    Mile 1 10.29
    Mile 2 9.22
    Mile 3 9.49
    Mile 4 9.11
    Mile 5 10.08
    Mile 6 10.01
Well done for getting out early. For all of you, focus on effort levels over pace if going out very early and/or 'on empty' until your body adjusts.

I know what you're trying to say and I agree. I don't think we'll know how much we love this until after the marathon. I think we'll either all be dying to sign up and do another or scream that we're never doing it again!

I don't know how I'll fair. None of us can answer that until we've done our first. It's so physically demanding AND time consuming. There may be reasons out of our control.

"It never gets easier but we do get fitter and stronger. That's why it may start to seem easier!"

Madness, the example she gave was someone who runs with Nurofen in their pocket and takes a few....obviously the physical therapist flipped when she heard it but some people won't listen.
It really shocked me, I'd read an article a few months back about people taking stuff like that after runs and I thought that excessive. Pain is there for a reason!

There's also an emerging theory that taking anti-inflammatories negates the effects of training i.e. it's the presence of inflammation that leads to body adapting so if you take it away the body doesn't adapt and the training is of no benefit.

    Personal disaster for me!

Ongoing pain in tooth got unbearable and I need a root canal. My whole head hurts! I'll try and do 7/8 miles this evening though. And again in the morning. Will probably have to break up my LSR this week and just get the mileage in, it's better than nothing. I would be too scared to do my LSR while I have this tooth ache!

Ouch, I had to have two teeth pulled within a month of each other a couple of years ago. Some of the worst pain I've ever had. I was in a queue, and someone asked me, unprompted, when I was going to the dentist!
