Quick question. Could a native Irish person tell me the correct pronunciation of Loughlinstown? I'm having a bet with a friend.

    Thanks, G

Can't believe it's taken this long for someone to use twitter to circumvent the picture ban in AH

They'll probably disable embedding tweets now too

It's an American and sometimes British (possibly other anglophone countries) thing to pronounce sometimes the "ough" and "augh" sound in names/place-names like "cough" or "laugh".

If you didn't know for certain, what were you doing arguing about it in the first place?

The world could do with fewer people arguing about things they don't know the first thing about.

Yep, know British people who couldn't pronounce their own address. They lived in a townland that started with "Lough..." and they just always called it "Luff"...

Ironic since it was the British who re-spelt all our town-names with 'gh' endings in the first place. The eijits. :D

There is a place in Nevada called Laughlin which is pronounced Lawflin.
That could be where you are getting confused.

I used to work in tourism, the way people not from Ireland pronounced Howth was amusing.

How do you pronounce it ? I say Kill-ma-chanic, others say Kill-mac-an-ogue.

Maybe we should just officially call it Kilmac like so many already do.

Ah it's not that bad in the Lounge anymore, you just can't enter the Bar unless you are known to 2 Barmen and at least 13 locals

    Keighley in Yorkshire.

    Should be pronounced Keithlee.

    Invariably pronounced Keeflay.

    Kil-ma-chanic :)

All tne locals I know say Kill-ma-canogue, which they sometimes abbreviate to Kilmac.

Of course the spelling is a whole other ball came, with the bus displaying one version, (which the locals agree with), while the road signs display another spelling
