    Hi All,

Quick question (and apologies if it is in the wrong place)

I am wondering if anyone is in a similar position to me that might be able to offer some advice

I know if you are fully self employed you are not entitled to state maternity benefit.... but my question is different slightly as i work full time and have done for years but also have a very small business

Am I right in thinking that as long as I am working that I will be entitled to the state maternity benefit??

I think I read somewhere a long time ago about your profit, that if it is under 5k then you are not classed as "self employed"

Can anyone offer any advice? I have tried online so many times but I can only seem to find info about maternity benefit when you are working or self employed but never both

Self-employed people are entitled to state maternity benefit, provided they meet the other criteria. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/social_welfare_payments_to_families_and_children/maternity_benefit.html

The 5k cut-off only applies if self-employment is your only work. It's irrelevant if you are paying PRSI contributions through employment.

The thing to be aware of is that you cannot be earning (either in employment or self-employment) while you are on Maternity Benefit. So you will have to manage your sideline so you don't have any business income during this time.
