Hi all, Like Pink just looking for some advice on here, ran 10 mile frank duffy in 1hr 11 50sec, Never ran marathon or even half before. Hoping to break 1hr 38m in half next month. On runkeeper sub 3.30 plan at moment, am i being far too optimistic? should i stay on current plan, training ramping up a lot in september...:confused::)

Hi Coolhandspan, your 10 mile time would suggest that you are in the right zone to hit your targets. It will be a question how you get through the rest of your training and if you can build the endurance levels correctly. If all is going OK I see no reason why you wouldn't stick to the plan at this stage. If however when the plan ramps up in September you find it too much then that might be the time to relook at the plan if needs be.

Don't forget our Upcoming Races page here. Absolutely no pressure but I found it useful for cross referencing 10km and 10 mile times from fellow novices in trying to establish a HM target. Of course, I will be running my own race, and any race result will only be meaningful to me in establishing a future broad target for the marathon.

God this training and these races are the best thing I have done in years. Really enjoying the challenges, and they are aplenty!!!!!

How's that working out for you?

I never said it was successful but haven't given up yet! :D

Going for a sail/swim later so at least my legs will thank me for the sea dip.

My holidays and ROK at least have been good experiences to date :P

I have 4 goals, now I just need to mentally prepare myself for what happens if the first two slip away during the race, I don't think I've fully embraced the fact that they more than likely will.

    A is 4:30
    B is 4:45
    C is to beat 4:57
    D is to finish

A bit of PMA please Toulouse.......from what I have seen so far your goals are very reasonable and achievable so let's embrace that before we start embracing anything else :)

Bet you that you will have the endurance to party all weekend at EP so bring a bit of that die hard attitude with you on the 26th and you will be grand :D

Thanks FBOT for the vote of confidence. Think I'm just starting to get the fear or maybe it's butterflies everytime I think about the 26th. Haven't figured out which one yet!

Damn right I'll be partying all weekend and am bringing a little of my training to it too. My friends are already sick of me talking about where serves porridge in the morning, the importance of hydration (I'll be bringing the Nunn tabs) and which protein bars are the nicest :D

everything on the day could be great, and that goes for everyone, all we are saying is 'be prepared' for any and every eventuality. Keep working towards your goals, give yourself a few 'other' goals and remain positive :)

This thread from a couple of years back shows various people's experiences in scaling up from HM to Marathon distance for the first time. It shows how unreliable the calculators can be when you're tackling the distance for the first time.

Thanks a mil for this in particular. It was eye opening and pretty frightening!

Yes think we need some more PMA positive mental attitude .... Feel the mood is turning into fear and apprehension ...... Let's be positive but be mentally prepared for plan BCDE and F .... :) lots of great insight from the mentors and definately makes you think .... But not too much .... Keep it positive. :)

Bad week at the office this week.
Pulled muscle in my back during Sunday's Dublin City Triathlon so training has been shelved all week.
Hopefully come Friday I'll be back on track.

We really should arrange to run together (in the 4:30 group) - if nothing else, we can motivate and push each other over the line.

Well that went s*it :( 8 miles easy on the cards Mrs Kennyg kept me company for 5 miles and had to head off the collect Kenny juniors. Was conscious of the tight calves during the run and the niggle in my Achilles. Went on to do the remaining 3 myself and missed the chitter chatter and started to notice the tightness more. Packed it in after 1.2 miles. Got 6.2 miles done but not 8. Am putting it down to massage last night may still have some pain from working out the muscles. Might take a break tomorrow instead of Friday and run Friday assess the situation again. Feeling fed up :( hopefully will get a pep talk from the hubby ... The advantages of having a mentor at home !!

It's probably just a combination of all the running over the past few weeks. I did 14 miles last Saturday that was way easier than the 8 I did this morning. Just didn't enjoy it. Just chalk it down to a bad run, and we'll both do better tomorrow!
