Being a 6 ft tall blonde lady

I actually thought you were talking about me there for a second when I read that first! Thought you knew me or something!

But anyway, surely half of the email addresses are from people signing up once, have a gawk and never log back in again. Never even giving CC details. I do this all the time with shopping sites or whatever else.

All us weird drunks who lurk on the net are 6ft blonde ladies.
Seriously, 115,000 Irish punters is the give and the tell that you're right. We'll call it 100,000 drunk morons with nothing better to do in the wee small hours than take a glance, maybe 14,000 trying to catch their other halves out and 1000 idiots who think the internet is a better option than the local knocking shop.
Another statistic - 90% of the leaked clowns are male - which leads me think we have a very horny bunch of women making up the 10%, a bunch of lads ready for NEW experiences with each other or a bunch of bull**** artists drunk in charge of a credit card.
    I'm taking option 3.

So whos in the doghouse then? Absolutely everybody who logged into the site? Or just the people who used credit cards and emails with their real name/work emails?

Im not atall tech savvy so im geniunely curious

^ Anybody who has their credit card details online for all to see. I'd imagine the last 30 days has been fun and games down the shops for our conscientious hackers.

"Sorry, love, the holiday and the kids education are screwed"
    "Whys that, honey ?"
"Because I got the horn one night and told a bunch of thieves my bank details."
"That's it, you moron. I've been sleeping with the bank manager for the last six months, We met in the golf club. Sling your useless hook."

Apparently there are no complete credit card numbers available online, which is a small mercy.

I assume the credit card numbers that have been dumped online actually look like the receipt you get for visa transactions, e.g. ****-****-****-7334
A prominent opposition TD is on the list.
I was skeptical about this but... http://www.herald.ie/news/fianna-fail-td-and-academics-listed-in-affairs-site-data-breach-31466866.html

Also, if you search the TD's email address in Trustify as [firstname].[lastname]@oireachtas.ie, you get this result

Why does this politician need to get lawyered up if he's never heard of the website? Seems a bit of an overreaction.

Gay man from Saudi Arabia who used AM when travelling for extremely discreet relationships.

This exact situation may or may not be true, but this is a very possible situation for some gay men (/ women?) in Saudi Arabia

I'm not sure if I believe this tbh. Why would a gay man use a website primarily directed at heterosexual men (and women) when there are any amount of free or cheaper gay specific sites?

I'd guess that if someone saw that you used Grindr, they'd assume you're gay. But if they saw that you used AM, they'd assume you were straight. Also, it's possible that the gay sites are blocked in Saudi. That's not to say the story could be fake, just that I can see how using the AM site would make sense in that situation.

I checked 4 of my email addresses in the first link and 3 of them have been 'pwned'

Then I checked the AM email address checker and Im all clear, but I could have just as easily been pwned there too.

Its a bit of a non story seeing as anyone can come along and register any email address on AM site.

I'm a bit worried to be honest, that ****ing email is my apple id and we share an ipad ....
My wife really trusts me and there is no CC transactions there and it's impossible to contact anyone on the site without paying

These sites are giving a straight YES or NO to an email ... doesn't take into account :

    CC associated
    login times etc ...

a lot of people are going to be unfairly accused..

Reminds me of MLIFGATE back in 2014 when Michael McGrath was accused of likeing MLIF OF THE WEEK when in reality his facebook was hacked

Fianna Fáil TD ‘definitely did not like MILF page’ on Facebook

Michael McGrath said his Facebook page was hacked, and has now been taken offline.

Surely every address would need to be verified through clicking back from a link in their inbox.

I can't remember the last time I signed up for anything online and didn't have to validate my email.

So whatever about gmail, hotmail and outlook accounts, this makes institutional emails very difficult to explain away.

Not that I think anyone needs to explain their private life, but we all know this won't go away.

Unfairly accused would be if they didn't even have an account...but you do? On a website for cheaters? For what?

yep, I didn't think of this...

In that case if your email address is on the AM list, you would have some explaining to do.

Someone on Reddit mentioned how they had signed up for AM 6 years ago, but didn't use it when they discovered it was paid, and had completely forgotten that they even had an account. Three weeks before their wedding, they get an email from a Buzzfeed "reporter" who had gone through the list of usernames and had contacted a random person. They had signed up before they met their fiancé and saw it as an alternative to other dating sites when they were single.

Buzzfeed is an absolute rag of a website and this shows how disgusting they are.

Yea I'm sure every single person who is getting outed now, is also saying "but I just went to all the bother of making an account, it's not like I was actually going to use it...wtf?"

Well yeah, sign up free years ago, login, see it's pretty much paid-only, forget about it.

The released info shows how long people subscribed for and when so if caught on the list and you didn't pay for it you should be able to show that. Will still make an awkward conversation.

Curiosity, I didn't believe it was for real, so signed up for an account (no payment) to see profiles and confirmed they were false.

    logged in once.

Never sent any message or attempted to. (costs money anyway)

Totally innocent, I've never had an affair.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,981 ✭✭✭KomradeBishop

Yea people just signed up for a site specifically aimed at having an affair/cheating, completely innocently - "Oh wait, it's paid only? Ah I wasn't really trying to have an affair anyway..." ;).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,304 ✭✭✭✭K-9

So people having a nosey on dating websites are not get a life busy bodies, but are in fact definitely 100% looking for a date.

Think you need to think that one through KB.

It's kind of betrayed by the "Oh wait, it's a paid-only site? Fúck that..." excuse - because if that is the reason people are giving, then obviously the reason is not that they were only having a nosey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,544 ✭✭✭Samaris

I find the glee in a lot of the commentary on this situation (in the newspapers, conversations, etc) a bit disturbing. A bunch of people use a dubious website, big deal.

But then some script kiddies get in and, claiming to be moral guardians, out everyone on it, having tried and failed to blackmail the site into going down. Some of those they outed were most likely innocent and may even - as in the case of that gay man in Saudi Arabia - be in serious danger due to it.

Leaving aside the nature of the website, this was an attempt at blackmail that's now hit a lot of people. So, what other damage could be done by so-called moral guardians? How about the databases of a Family Planning clinic, listing women who may have had abortions? Or porn site users? Or, hell, use your imagination for stuff that someone, somewhere will severely disapprove of. I may not approve of Ashley Madison's raison d'etre, but for the sake of internet privacy, I hope Team Impact get caught and get punished.

Unfairly accused????? You set up a profile on a website for people to have affairs... What were your intentions in the first place?

I think you need at least seven question marks before he's obliged to reveal to you his intentions.

    Them's the rules.

Have a look at other hook-up sites and there's loads who say they're looking for married/attached people. Also if there's a site promising easy hook-up its fairly easy to pretend to be attached to make use of it.
