AFAIK it's not an offence to include non applicable VAT on an invoice.

Isn't this what duty free shops are doing? Charging people VAT when the sale should be vat free.

Nothing to stop you charging VAT - as long as you forward it to the Revenue.

    "By who?"

It's "by whom?" you grammatical illiterate!

Ah yes, I remember a sketch on the radio version of "Knowing Me, Knowing You", where a young child prodigy kept interrupting Alan Partridge and correcting his grammar, "to whom, to whom" brilliant sketch, if you find it, sorry for the useless info.........

Only if VAT is due to the revenue.

Only if VAT is due to the revenue.

It would be due if you're charging it, surely?

I'm sure if you are collecting VAT that you need to give it to Revenue, whether it was "applicable" or not.

I'd rather punch myself in the ballbag than listen to another hour of this horse plop.

    I'm going to the pub.

You say that Wacker, but trust me, that's not the best route to go down.....so to speak.

Only if VAT is due to the revenue.

If the dog training, for example, is zero-VAT rated, but the bold Henry charges VAT on it, the Revenue want it. It would then be up to the payer of the VAT (the end user / customer) to attempt to reclaim the VAT from the Revenue, but best of luck to them with that. Strictly speaking, they should cough up, but they are truly stingey bastards and belong in the Stinge Thread on AH.
It might well be that Henry is VAT registered, and he (or an assistant) simply made an error in charging it on the training in those circumstances. If it was for training a foreign dog, maybe it should never have been charged. I don't know and I cba looking it up.

Anyway, the principle is - charge VAT if you like, but don't pass it on and the Revenuers will be after you - they really don't like that.

Joe has opened the hatchet cupboard, and is standing looking at the gleaming array within it, wondering what one to select...
A nice little 15" 8oz shorty, made of finest Munich steel, hand ground by a master craftsman.

But no; he regretfully puts that back and picks up his Old Faithful - the blunderbuss, veteran of many a busy afternoon shooting session. The only problem with the blunderbuss is its tendency to go off half-cocked, and take the foot off the person wielding it.
