I might be interested in this as I have very poor coverage at home and according to ComReg website there is a Vodafone mast about 5 miles from my house so it should be way beetter as other masts are at least 10 miles away.
I'm not sure though how you're getting it for less than 20...

    33 + 60 = 93 Points
If you need 300 points for €30 top up then you need 93 points X 4 months (in order to get 300 or more). So basically you're 5th month is free.

So in 12 months you get 2 free months and pay for 10 months
10 X €30 = €300 for the year which averages out at €25 per month.

    Am I missing something ?

When you redeem the 300 pts for the RED offer you get another 60 pts worth 6 euro.
Effectively 30euro minus 93 pts is average 20.70 per mth BUT the fact that you recieve extra points throughout the year AND get 60 pts effectively 6euro when you redeem your 300 pts for 30 top up and RED offer. It'll work out at a bit under 20euro a month.

    - If your phone is off or out of range and you get a missed call, you get a missed call text when you turn your phone back on with TM. Very useful to know if you missed an important call. 48 don't support this, so you have no idea if you missed an important call. I found this one super annoying!

Do you have to enable this functionality somewhere? because I have been years with Tesco mobile and I really miss those missed call texts.

So how will do use web texts or the app for them ?

You really don't need the unlimited texts with the 300 free webtexts if you download the app.

Good point. If you do that, plus use iMessage and whatsapp, then you could top-up by just €15 per month, add the 5GB of data for €10 and you would be left with €5 credit.

I suppose I don't bother with that as I don't even use 1GB per month as is and I'd have no use for the extra €5 credit. To be honest, with using clubcard points, it is already so ridiculously cheap, I don't think it is worth the hassle of using web texts. But still, a really good idea for some people.

My post from the thread in the mobiles forum.
It's a very poor showing. The €10 and €15 package is easily trumped by 48 with their €10 package. 48 also have them on iD's €25 package. The €20 48 package beats it on everything bar landline calls. Tesco beat iD on the €15, €20 and €25 package with their prepay offering. The only problem is Tesco's various prepay bundles aren't as clearly laid out and require you to know what you're looking for.

As for the €29 bundle, I can't see anything that beats it outright but Tesco's sim only plan is €25 a month but it only gives 15GBs of data. The upside is the shorter contract, 12 months with Tesco, 24 months with iD. Tesco have better international rates as well I think. For most people I can't see them needing more than 15GBs to Tesco would probably be the better option but for those who need the extra data iD are obviously the better choice.

TL;DR: For everything bar the €29 package you can get something better for the same price or cheaper with either Tesco or 48 and the €29 package isn't exactly a massive amount better than Tesco's €25 package.

Really disappointed with this. I was hoping for much better competition than this. At least the people who got a friends and family sim got a bargain out of this. Now, hopefully I get mine set up. :)

Have to give them their dues, it's an interesting concept being able to configure what you need.

However I don't see the offerings to be groundbreaking (price/data) compared to what's already available elsewhere... so personally it's a "meh" from me.

I'll be waiting to see if UPC can really shake up the market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭biebiebie

    Meant to add

I was hoping/expecting them to give away the staff pricing to the first 5,000 or so customers to order a SIM.

That could have been a great marketing ploy.

Find that very disappointing to be honest!

PS if ID Mobile find this suggestion useful then I'm #1 on the list please!!

Being able to build your own package is the big selling point. I think the 20GB of 4G data for €13 on a monthly contract will be popular for people looking to use their phone as a WiFi hotspot. It well trumps TM's previous data 15GB of 3G for €15 which went back on for PAYG.

PS I might be wrong but it looks to me as if the plans are the same price on PAYG as on Billpay! Am I right??

The only network they are cheaper than are Vodafone and not by much. Plus Vodafones coverage will be far more reliable. They are far more expensive than 48 and Tesco for the lower to middle of the road offerings so I can't see them gaining much ground bar the walk on customers who generally by their phones etc from CPW. Overall a poor showing for PAYG.

Super disappointing. Not competitive at all!

Unless you are desperate to get 4G, then you will get a much better deals from Tesco Mobile and 48.

Even if you want 4G and lots of data, you would still probably be better off with Three €20 All You can Eat Prepay plan.

As I feared, I think this company won't be competitive, instead they will lean on doing the hard sell to clueless people who come into their store for help :(

Except, that doesn't seem to be an option!

Going by the plan builder on their website, you have to get at least 100 minutes (€3.50) + 100 Texts (€3.50) and then the data is €13 for 20GB. There doesn't seem to be any option for data only.

So that all adds up to €20.

That isn't competitive, Three's €20 All You Can Eat prepay plan will give you a lot more, for the same money.

I called into CPW in Harvey Normans Kinsale Rd cork and you wouldn't even know ID mobile exists except for a bundle of SIMS next to the register. I thought there might have been some offers for the 1st numbers of customers but not a single thing. It looks like the only people who benefited from this launch were the staff with the friends and family SIM.

I can't say this is a very good offering at all, especially if they are trying to get people on a bill pay plan, just one example I saw in the last few minutes.

Unlimited* plan with 3 directly for Samsung S6 is €55 per month and the phone is free* right away on a 24 month contract. Total cost of contract is €1,320.00

Unlimited plan with ID (20gb data) and literally unlimited calls and texts is €58.13 per month. The phone is also free right away. Total cost of contract is €1,395.12.

If anyone was interested in taking out this contract there is no incentive to choose ID Mobile whatsoever. They are more expensive than 3, and you might aswell be with 3 directly so you have access to all of their services, probably more Mast usage and more offers such as 3+ and 3 like home to name a couple.

Their plans as a whole are not very inviting and I think most savvy mobile phone users will see this. For me it will be a no go, and they haven't brought anything new to the market that isn't already there, so they will end up just like the other countless MVNO's out there at the moment.

To be honest, I think ID have totally gone the wrong way with this idea of giving you maximum flexibility. That might have worked 3 years ago. But now with companies like Tesco and 48 giving you so much all in, for so little, then it totally makes this concept pointless.

To be honest, this sort of "choice" is more what I expect one of the big, uncompetitive networks to do, to trick their existing customers into thinking they are getting a good deal. I don't think that will work for a new company who needs to be aggressive and win new customers.

I won't be recommending this company to anyone.

So it looks like now we have to wait and hope UPC Mobile is more competitive. I fear they won't be, instead, like ID, relying on cross selling to their existing customers (all in one billing) then really being competitive, but I hope I'm wrong about that.

I also hope ID's prices don't reflect what Tesco Mobile charge when they eventually introduce 4G.

I just posted this comparison over on the Mobile forum, I thought people might be interested here. Some sample comparisons. Note I tried to much up as closely as possible based on price, followed by data offered:

    Tesco €15 - Unlimited calls, unlimited texts, 1GB 3G
    Tesco €15 - Unlimited calls, €5 free credit, 5GB 3G
    48 €10 - 300 mobile minutes, unlimited texts, 1GB 3G
    48 €15 - 50 mobile minutes, 100 texts, 15GB 3G
    ID €15 - 100 minutes, 100 texts, 1GB 4G

    Tesco €20 - Unlimited calls, unlimited texts, 5GB 3G
    48 €20 - 1000 mobile minutes, unlimited texts, 8GB 3G
    ID €20 - 250 minutes, 250 texts, 3GB 4G

    Tesco €25 - Unlimited calls, unlimited texts, 15GB 3G
    ID €25 - 250 minutes, 500 texts, 20GB 4G

So they really only start to get a little competitive with 20GB of data. But then if you interest is maximum data, then you would be better off with Threes, €20, All You can eat, prepay plan.

Real competition is having a real mobile network with its own infrastructure and not a MVNO.

That doesn't necessarily have to be the case. Tesco Mobile has brought incredibly competitive products to the market, their prices are so low it is unbelievable, I don't know how it could be any cheaper! And they are a MVNO.

Yes, I agree there needs to be some level of infrastructure competition, with at least two, preferably three networks. But building networks is super expensive and eventually it just isn't worth it.

Just look at Meteor/eMboile, they have their own network and they are the smallest player, but they aren't particularly competitive. That is because they have the massive overhead costs of running a network. While the likes of Tesco Mobile can easily undercut them as they don't have the terrible overhead costs of building a network.

Well that was disappointing. They were just all talk of how great they would be.
The only good thing I can see is the fact you can customize it to your needs.

Chris____ is right, we need a new full network with a new structure to really be competitive.
