Using the Drive-Safe App to help reduce insurance cost

I have been doing a lot of driving recently with a learner driver who uses the AXA drive-safe app .

I think this is a great idea as it definately works to reduce speed / obey the rules of the road etc.

I believe something similar to this should be introduced for all road users .

Anyone here familiar with this - here is some details about it :
The Drive Save app uses GPS functionality and requires you to record all your journeys on a smartphone app.
This app records details of the vehicle’s geographic position, travelling speed, acceleration and braking severity which AXA can monitor.
In return, you can receive a substantial up-front discount on your motor premium and an additional ‘cash-back’ discount during the year for good driving.

I might bung it on a cheap Chinese phone and hide the wretched thing in the boot of my mother's Feshty. Err I mean, fantastic idea, major contribution to road safety, heroic inurance companies, by so many to so few, etc. etc. :D

'Fraid Jim this would'nt work out for you in the boot of your mammy's Festhy ,because it actually works in reverse mode as well . I mean if your mammy was doing 20km/hour in a 50km zone , she might be penalised and would probably record a score of 3/5.

The app may not be a major contribution to road safety , but is still a contribution to road safety.

    20k in a 50? I'm afraid you don't know Mammy Goose! :D

You must record at least 90 trips over any 90 day assessment period

I only drive mine a couple of times a week I reckon. I'd fail at that T&C.

You can stop it and re-start as often as you like ,so a trip can be any distance you want.

    Do you really?
Really you think we all should be spied by insurer?
This is really daft idea, and I'm really angry at people who ever agreed for something like that, as there is a possibility that because of them as some stage we'll all need to have such device.
This will be end of the world for me - complete lack of freedom.

Will backtrack a small bit..........not all drivers , but certainly there are some drivers out there with full licences that could do with some education.

Obviously ones with say 8/10 penalty points for offences like speeding would get some value of this drive-safe app.

The drivers that pass us on the inside in a bus lane when we slow down to 50k , or even the ones that over-take and ignore the 50k limit completely .

Or maybe the ones that tailgate a learner driver when the car slows to road limit .
Or the ones that pass us out on a continuous white line .

There is a need for driver education - I've no doubt about that .

    Holy god, calm yourself.

A complete lack of freedom? Nobody is forcing you take the app. I'm not sure how an insurance crowd offering this service will revolutionise the way the Govt look at the Irish driving system but I'd love to hear your logic.

Also it's an App that measures your driving in return for much cheaper insurance premiums for learner drivers. There's not a little man following you around all day. The world has truly gone crazy.

His point was that things like this start as being an optional incentive, and could progress to being a requirement. Hence lack of freedom. It's not a little man following you, but it gives a private company a complete history and log of where you've been for the duration of your use of the app. Which isn't exactly great now is it...

    Hi all,

I'm currently 10 months into a policy with AXA and I have been using the drivesave app.
My trips on the app were assessed by AXA on 3 occasions and received the full cashback each time due to high scores on the app.

Do I still have to continue to use the app until the end of the policy? despite the fact that there no more cashback assessments left?

    Thanks.

I'd hate to be penalised on my telemetry alone especially if braking is a factor.
