Carphone Warehouse are to launch their ID Mobile network shortly and they have released information that their SIM only contract will cost €20.18/month. No info what that entails but it is 4G and presumably all calls, texts and a monthly data allowance. I suppose the data allowance is the variable.

They seem to be dribbling information for weeks, which is kind of annoying actually. Any concrete information, or is this more of their facebook posts?

Still won't beat plans on 48months

Does this count as a bargain with no solid data other than the price, and no release date for it?

They need to get it up and running soon, potential big back to school/college market waiting for them.

The unlimited plans will not be found at this price level. There will be lower price plans, but they wouldn't be available for discussion right away.

I would suggest against a BA at this time.
More details will be available tomorrow and this week.

He said an analysis of the new operator's pricing shows its SIM-only plan would cost customers just €20.18 a month.

On 3 network, like most of the pretendy networks, a BIG no on this one for me. They are barely able to cope with their own customers.

Sine people may want 4G but considering the amount of time people are on WiFi I don't think that it's a must have

Also worth reminding people of the call centre they closed due in Waterford. I won't give them any business

Was interested in it until I saw it was on Three.
Couldn't get 3g in Dublin when I was with them never mind 4g.

agreed, in my opinion 3 is the lowest quality network in Ireland

And you base this on what? Local pub talk, or taxi talk?

Please don't say you base it on the outage a couple of months ago - it will just show how you are Suckered by tabloid headlines and teen comment.

Outage a couple of months ago was former 02 customers who had not been merged onto the three platform. Previous 02 owners did not invest in infrastructure for over 2 years and their technology was straining at the seams - they didn't even have 4g and their 3g was dreadful.

Thankfully three have invested hugely to correct the non investment that was there before.

LOL, no, its not based on any of the above, its unfortunately based on actual usage and tied into contract with 3. Usage was in Dublin city centre, sandyford area, most major motorways in Ireland and Wexford area.

The main problems are as follows and are widely commented about and documented in this forum and others:

    - Switching between 4g/3g/2g
    - Low speeds and highly varying speeds when on 3g and 4g
    - Quality of help when speaking with support
    - Signal strength

Hopefully that answers your questions, your 'jump to conclusions' mat is in the post :)

To be honest I wasn't very happy when I was with 48. They miss a lot of important features that every mobile phone network really should have.

I then moved to Tesco Mobile and they are vastly superior to 48 and IMO much better value for money (unlimted calls, texts and 1GB of data for €15 or 5GB for €20).

If you then shop at Tesco, you can convert Tesco clubcard points to credit, effectively making them MUCH cheaper then 48 while offering far more IMO.

Talking about new networks. I seems UPC are also about to lunch their own mobile service, UPC Mobile and the offer they are currently trialling with selected UPC customers looks excellent at the moment. €15 gets you unlimited calls, text and 4G data (30GB FUP).

Looks a lot more interesting then ID at the moment. OF course that is just a trial, so we have to wait and see if they offer that when they launch generally and if there are any gotchas. But it could really shake up the market.

If you know the right peeps in Carphone Warehouse you can get the top tier (inc 20GB data) plan for 15 euro.

Could be staff or managers only...

but I don't know the right people...

    :(

(30GB FUP) ??? i recognize the numbers and the letters but what do they mean in that order??

I find Three very good. €20 a month plan is perfect for me (was paying €60 to Vodafone before this) and I don't ever have coverage issues. I'm primarily based in Killarney. Attached is my indoor 4G speed test done this morning!

    FUP = Fair Usage Policy

30GB = 30 Gigabytes, how much data you are allowed to use per month. 30GB would be very little for a wired broadband connection, but very generous for a mobile connection. By way of comparison, Tesco Mobile offer a 1GB or 5GB plan and 48 offer just 6GB on their most expensive plan. I think Three has a 15GB FUP on their unlimited products if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, I went from €60 Vodafone to Three too! But I didn't find Three very good. The €20 plan doesn't include week days calls and I found weekdays calls would cause me to blow through the €20 in less then a month. I also had big problems connect to their network, even in Dublin city center, due to issues they had with iPhones!

I then switched to 48 for two months which was better, but still far from perfect.

Finally I switched to Tesco Mobile which was perfect. No complaints or issues since then, fantastic value for money. Only thing they will need to watch out for is to introduce their own competitive 4G plans or they might end up been overtaken by UPC and ID.

Looking at ID Mobiles plans in the UK, http://www.idmobile.co.uk/shop/plans/sim-only , to be honest they only look ok.

£20, about €28, gets you 2000 minutes, 5000 texts and 10GB of data. Not really that competitive with what we already have here in Ireland. We will have to wait and see what they end up offering here.

To be fair that was TalkTalk which at that stage was no longer a part of, or in any way related to, CPW so you can't hang that on CPW!

I posted in the iD Mobile thread in the Mobiles forum, but take KillBiller with a pinch (or handful) of salt. They're <SNIP>

They stated that the price plans were visible on their app from today. They're not.

They stated that the figures work out better for the majority of 4G customers. Yes, but this can't be verified by those not in the knowledge in the network.

Their entire article reads like a press release, and they are only flogging their own service in the media at present.

Take a step back from them for the moment. For example, their app "with an exclusive look at the plans" lists nothing. The plan prices (only two of which are Bill Pay, and wrong) state they're coming soon and nothing else.

    Spin, nothing more.

    Hi guys,

    Shane here from KillBiller.

Good to see that there's a bit of conversation around todays news. Apologies that the full details of the plans aren't in the application yet - we are embargoed on their release until they're officially out there. At that point, the full pricing structure will be visible.

However - the prices that you see on the app now accurately portray what you would spend on iD's new tariffs - the idea was to get people interested. The prices wont be available anywhere else until the network launches. :)

And yep - our analysis showed that they'll provide the cheapest 4G plans. Tesco still has the best 3G plan - the 15 euro prepay top up undercuts the market by a fair whack.

And again yep - article was a press release - we sent it to every newspaper we could find. The aim was to get publicity both for the work that we've done, raise awareness for the application that we've built, and show the impact of the new network! Absolutely open about this!

Analysis was pretty comprehensive - not sure if there's been something done on this level in Ireland in public - so absolutely interested in your comments. You can see the details on our site.

    Thanks,

    Shane

You don't mention 48, their 10 euro plan in my opinion is the best

A lot of people would run through 300 minutes and 1GB of data in a few days.

The best sim only "unlimited" 30 day plan with no faffing about with top ups, texting for deals and bundles etc out there right now is with emobile business, but you need to sign up under a business and evidence is required.

    It's the €20 (+ VAT) option here: https://business.eircom.net/product/small-business-plans/sim-plans/

It works out less than €25 a month but their roaming allowance is where they really shine through. All calls and texts are as at home with no extra cost and you get 250mb of data a month on top.

I'm waiting to see what UPC come out with too but for my mam mainly, I don't think these new offers will be doing much to compete roaming wise which is important for me, but not for my mam, it all depends on your usage.

Did you compare ID's plans with UPC Mobiles upcoming plans?

From what UPC are trialling with some UPC customers at the moment, €15 for unlimited calls, texts and 30GB of 4G data, it absolutely destroys ID's plans.

Yes, UPC isn't fully available yet and we don't know if this rate will remain when it does launch. But the same is true for ID. So I think saying ID will be the cheapest 4G plan is extremely premature!

Personally I'll be waiting for both ID and UPC Mobile to officially launch before making a decision and I'd also wait off a little to see how Tesco Mobile responds.

Personally I won't be just looking at the main details of these plans, but also the small text:

    - Cost of international calls
    - Cost of international roaming
    - Support for web texts
    - Voicemail support
    - Missed call text support
    - Out of bundle costs
    - What their customer support is like, etc.

There'll also be the likely advantage that, much like eircom offer customers of their mobile broadband a discount, so will UPC for their tariffs. Do we know if either network have announced post pay plans?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,863 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Is the UPC trial with some customers actually underway already? I mean is their network actually live right now and they are just testing the waters before launching to the general public? I'm switching my mam to Saorview/Freesat instead of UPC tv so will be changing her contract to be just phone/broadband, but thinking to hold off before getting into any new contracts if mobile can be included in that for an all in competitive bundle price.

Any idea when we may see UPC officially launch their service? The prospect of a mobile/landline/broadband bundle is forcing me to be patient.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 24,122 Mod ✭✭✭✭bk

    ^^

Yes, UPC's mobile network is already live and already being tested by some people on boards.ie:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057470037

The speculation is that they will launch in mid-October.

Personally I'd recommend people to hold off on changing, I think a lot will change over the next 3 months. ID will launch, followed by UPC and then we are likely to see responses from Tesco Mobile and 48, I'd expect they will introduce their own 4G plans, etc.
