Economical car, cheap petrol/diesel/insurance?

I have a budget of 1000 euros, and am wondering if there would be any cars that would come close to my budget that would be economical on petrol.

    Here's some details about me;

Failed driver test on few minors errors, I currently own a ford focus - my insurance stands at 1.8k a year, that's the cheapest I could find - I'm with First Ireland, and am considering switching insurance companies when I get a NCB to search for a cheaper car insurance quote.

I will be renewing my learner permit, and will correct my mistakes I have made in the driving test by practicing etc, in mean time I haven't really got the money too order another appointment for driving exam..

I'm 20 years old, and I was thinking of possibly getting a BMW or VW if i were to pass my driving test, this will have to wait unfortunately I suppose.

So I'm looking lighter choices, something that I had my eye on was mitsubishi cars, like the lancer/mirage etc, they're 1.3l generally, are they economical cars, as in would they eat petrol etc? Or should I not bother with these cars?

    I'm open to offers, I really don't want to get a 1.0l unless it's super economical, a 1.2 I wouldn't mind, so really it can 1.2-1.8l?
I should get a NCB in October..

I would use this car for work, with friends etc

At that price it really comes down to the condition of the individual car itself, not the make or model.

Also you'll find it hard to get insured on a Lancer, they're classed as boy racer cars, even the base models that are far from it

    I don't understand.
You've €1000 to spend on a car but don't have the money to apply for a test !!

Surely get your test sorted and then a new motor.

Really don't like the system we have where a known failed driver is allowed to drive away, probably without a qualified driver too.

You think so? I think I remember when I used chill.ie quick quote, I told em I'm 20, with 1 ncb and I think they auto assume that I got full driving license with the quick quote, and at one stage of trying few different lancers it showed me constant 1k-1.2k insurance fee..

Hmm, well what would you suggest, would there be anything in that price range that could get me a decent car that wouldn't be too expensive on insurance/petrol? I can try to bump up my budget to 1500e but can't go any further at the moment..

Well I suppose I didn't clarify myself too great on providing the necessary detail, apologies -- I have recently gotten new work and paid my personal debts, by 1000e budget I mean I will have it, and due to current occurrences in my surroundings, the current car that I have isn't always available to me, only about 70-80 percent of the time, I would like to bump them figures to 100 percent owned by me.

Yes, I do also agree that the system give lightly to learner drivers, but I assure you -- I was accompanied the whole time on the way to the test center with a qualified driver. :)

That being the case, and in a way resolved -- I do admit, I drive unaccompanied most of the time, simply because that's the hard truth -- who going to stop a 18-25 year old driving without a qualified driver? Gardai, of course in any case -- but I drove almost a full year with no problems, you know why? Because I'm a sensible and safe driver, the only reason I failed is because I'm a learner, learners tend to fail, I know the mistakes I made one of them being 'reversing around corner observation', I didn't look over my shoulder, even thought I remember looking both ways, maybe I just didn't do it right I will most certainly book a pre-test instructor. The driving examiner even complemented my driving capability in good shape, just few bits and bobs that I was off in the test.

Are you insured on your own policy with First Ireland? Id assume you are anyway. Im 20 and got quoted €2800 on a 1.0 Seat Ibiza 2001 today which I was absolutely shocked at considering the quotes Ive seen people get on here.

Yeah, just keep trying to get quotes from different companies too.. I done lessons with FirstIreland thus got a discount for that, it was originally like 2.1k
I'm insured as a main driver, and no one else is insured on the car.

Yeah the €2800 was including the lessons discount, I had to laugh at the guy when he said it. I was originally quoted €4500 without the discount.

Think Im just going to go with BoxyMo for a year to build up my Ncb!
