He doesn't have any particular health problems, though we originally put him onto the dry food because he was having a bit of trouble with his bowels, and that cleared up once he went on the dry food. We're giving him one pouch a day and some dry food at the moment to see how he tolerates it.

Yeah I would have expected him to clear up a bit with the dry food. Without knowing all the facts or your vet or anything I wouldn't rush to say your vet is giving you bad advice. But yeah it is unusual for her to suggest a supermarket brand over a can of Hills. (I'm just using Hill's as an example, I don't feed my own cat Hills)

OneOfThem, as SummerChic suggested, I can't stress how important it is to get them neutered. As someone who does trap, neuter, release for rescue groups, I could happily point you in the direction of resources to get them all done.

As kittens can get pregnant from 4months old, while its lovely to be feeding 3 mouths now, you could easily have 20 by next year.

If you're Dublin based, I could trap and transport them myself.

The Hills science food that you can only probably buy from her. I see a lot of vets selling these "special diet" foods and they are not cheap. I would wonder if they are any better then food you would buy in the supermarkets.

Nope, MaxiZoo stock it. It's not as expensive as, say, Royal Canin, but it's not entirely cheap, either. We feed our cats on it, together with pouches of wet food.
I've never had a vet recommend dry food only as cats would normally get nearly all their water from the prey they catch. So to feed them dry food and have them drink lots of water to make up for the dehydrating effect doesn't seem right.

Can I ask what you feed your cats?

I use Burns now and I find it really good for my fella. He's an indoor/outdoor cat though so he can get himself a mouse if he feels like it. A few years ago I had a different cat and was advised to put him on hills but I didn't think he was thriving on it and I noticed an improvement in his coat quality when I switched. Every animal is different though so I'm not against Hills or anything I just didn't think it was right for mine.

Thanks for letting me know. Our cat is an indoor/outdoor cat too and he does sometimes supplement his diet with a bird or two. I understand what you're saying about every animal being different and I have to say that he does have a very glossy coat and he seems quite well so I think we'll stick with the hills and a pouch of felix a day for the moment. I've never heard of Burns though, I'll definitely have a look at them.

Well it sounds like your fella is well taken care of:-) There are so many food choices out there that I find myself constantly looking around wondering if I should be using something else but he's the picture of health at the moment.
There are a lot of threads on animal and pet issues dedicated to nutrition too and some of the folk there are very knowlegable.

Nah, there's no confusion about why people hate them.
