You can't say that with certainty.

You can logically reduce the possibility of toxoplasmosis by not having cats around. (As well as preparing meals hygienically and cooking meat thoroughly)

Given that the main source of toxoplasmosis is from contaminated food or water not having cats around is negligible really. Unless we all move into bubbles and only consume sterile food/drink we're all at risk of various things, but none of us is going to give up eating or drinking to reduce the risk. :D

She didn't say it with certainty - hence the word "probably." :)

And if we're discussing logical solutions, the most logical solution to preventing toxoplasmosis would be to wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw meats and vegetables and gardening/cleaning a litter box.

I like dogs too, but no way in hell are they cleaner than cats

No chance. Dogs are far cleaner!

Like I said, many cats like to frequent sewage systems and drains in search of vermin like mice and rats.

Vast majority of cat owners see no need to wash their animals for their entire lifespan! (Their tongue is good enough for 16-18 years of filth)

Even the dirtiest dog you can think of, normally gets washed and groomed at some period. And most dog owners do it on a regular basis.

I see many cat owners as lazy pet owners who also enjoy emotional detachment - and probably not just from their pets either! ;)

They talk about independence and self-reliance. But what they're subconsciously saying is - I'm lazy/self absorbed/too "busy"... but I still selfishly want a pet for those moments when I need company! (me me me) :P

Being a good dog owner requires more responsibility and selflessness. They become one of your best friends, and you make time for them like you would a great friend. And they're great for getting out and meeting new people too!

I've also noticed that crazy cat lady thing too. (occasionally some men too) Women with several cats often seem quite odd. Like they have some mental issues...

Few things in life are better at reducing stress than a contented, purring kitty.

My cat is your stereotypical self centered prick. But I still adore him. He does let you rub his stomach and curls up at the foot of the bed sometimes when I'm asleep.

Third line of post reinforces first line, despite "but" in second line... odd.

I thought it was leftover behaviour from when big cats would bleed their prey to make the meat keep longer?
What an absolutely ludicrous comment. It's probably from when their mothers fed them and they'd knead her to get more milk to come out. Why would they treat a person they like as prey when they're having a special moment with them? Ridiculous.

Isn't the reason obvious? You can see their arseholes. It's hard to love anything when you can see that detail every time they stroll around.

It's not so much that you CAN see it, it's the way they flaunt it. A dog won't put anywhere near as much effort into showing you their arsehole, but a cat wears it like... a badge of honour.

And they get all private about defecation, but a good session of hole-licking is something they almost seem proud to display.

If you don't like something, and have to constantly hear about how great it is, you're going to resent it.

The internet is predominantly populated by cat people. Cat talk abounds.

If you find them irritating to begin with, the constant stream of cat photos, videos, and general chatter online can quickly escalate your irritation to annoyance and eventually flat-out hatred.

I'm glad you find solace in your pets, but the sad fact is that anything which is popular is hated by those who don't enjoy it purely because it's not for them, and they're sick to the back teeth of hearing about it.

It's because they can't believe how blind their owners are to the fact they're using that same tongue to clean themselves, then essentially wiping their a** juice all over their beloved owners! lol

They're basically marking their territory! YOU! :D

Cats and baboons. It's all about the arse. Dogs are so much more discreet.

It is common knowledge that cats can predict earthquakes. They do not tell us, however, because cats are assholes."

Cats are becoming more widely known as great companions for Autistic children as well as providing other healing benefits.

All said and done, most of us love animals. I love most animals but I'll always have a preference for cats and I've never had any that weren't loving and affectionate and endlessly entertaining, as well as empathic. :)

Very true. I have a boisterous heavy handed 5 year old son who just loves one of my cats in particular. The cat is brilliant with him let's him rub him and hug him but moves back if he is being too rough. That being said I never leave the 2 alone more for the fact I'd be afraid the cat would be hurt. If my son was scratched I know he must have hurt the cat.

If a dog does that, it's likely because his anal glands are blocked. Vet time. :)

Used to do dog grooming. That was the worst part of the job anal gland squeezing (vomit!)

I've had a difficult few weeks. My work and personal life have gone in a direction I could never have contemplated. The two things that have provided some semblance of normality are: a collection of books that I've always wanted to read; my two cats - Hopkins and Pluck.

I didn't grow up around cats. We always had a dog. I still love dogs. I was extremely reticent about allowing cats into the apartment in the first place. Now I love Hopkins and Pluck. Cats are extremely loving and affectionate animals. When I arrive into the apartment they greet me. They'll hop on my lap, nudge my chin, touch their noses' off mine. Fall asleep on a cushion beside me as I check out Bloomberg. Those two dudes rock.

Where has this irrational hatred of cats that some people express so vehemently come from? What is it about our feline companions that make people feel such hatred against them? Is it something people take up alongside hating ginger people and FF?

I've always hated cats .......... then I saw something which completely changed my opinion of them.

Grew up with cats mainly and I have to say, the hatred for cats is justified to an extent. They can be very persnickety, they sleep all the time, and sometimes I swear my mom's cat attacks her/trips her on purpose, and for no particular reason, just because he's in a bad mood. Having said that, they're very pretty animals (have seen 1 ugly cat in my whole life, yet countless dogs) and the behavior of a cat is largely determined by it's owner. My mom's cat knows that he's not going to pull that stuff with me unless he wants a face full of water so he never scratches/bites or walks in front of me, and I trained him to come to me when i call him. He's not even mine and he obeys me more than he does my mother. Some discipline with cats goes a long way.

I've no problem with people disliking cats, it's the people who say they should be killed, maimed, etc... who really disgust me. We're all allowed an opinion but anyone who enjoys the idea of any animal being in pain has issues IMO.

From my experience people who hate cats have never interacted or owned one. Growing up my mam used to go on quite vocally about how she hated cats. When my sister and I moved out we both adopted cats of our own and while over visiting our houses she realised that they arent nearly as disgusting or horrible as she thought. She went on to adopt one of her own and has the thing spoilt rotten :D

AvB hasn't been back...I've a sneaking suspicion that this was a subtle and very well calculated way to get everyone to kick off without having to talk about BMWs or IT guys

    Hi,

That wasn't the case- before people start applying easy stereotypes to posters. Hopkins and Pluck are two beautiful creatures. I've moved from not having any great opinion on cats, to thinking they are a wonderful, loving and whip-smart type of pet.

I didn't want them in the apartment. Despite the access to a rooftop garden. I now see them as being companions. P and H don't understand what is happening whilst I watch The Jinx. They do love sitting here beside me though.

    They are my Frankfurtian Felines.

I didn't used to like cats. When we first moved to Ireland the place we intially rented didn't have room for a dog and we wanted our son to have a pet. We were going to wait until we bought a house and get a dog, but someone we knew offered us a kitten they had to give away. I was very apprehensive. I remember thinking on the day it was due to arrive that we had made a huge mistake.

She is one of the best decisions I have ever made. She is adorable, affectionate, funny, trusting, highly entertaining, sweet and the best pet that OH and I have ever had in our lives. I used to look down at people who were obsessed with their cats and now I am one of them. I have dozens of photos and videos of her on my phone. When we go back to NZ, it's really hard to leave family and friends there to come back again, but knowing I will see Pippy when I come back makes it easier to leave. If she was sick and could be restored to full health, I would pay any price and would go as far as remortgaging the house to pay for it.

I will never laugh at cat obsessed people ever again ;)

I'm more of a dog person tbh. Never really liked cats even though when I was a child we always had one or two.

My opinion could be tainted by stray cats in our estate leaving big sloppy ****es in our garden where my kids play!
