I'm a 19 year old male and I want to start driving. I don't want to get a micra or a clio or any 1 litre car. I have no job at the moment but I have €1,500 in the bank. I was looking at some corollas on done deal and most of them are going for around €800- €1200. If I got a job in Dunnes or Tesco, would I be able to afford one?

Insurance on corollas can be hefty for young drivers. Also, a car that old you might struggle to get insured on in the first place. A lot of places won't insure a car older than 15 years old, the rest are generally 95 and up.

Your biggest expense will be insurance. Cars older than 15 years are not flavor of the month with insurance companies, this plus your age and lack of driving experience will add up to a very high insurance premium. Even on a 1.0 litre Micra I'd say you will be looking at expensive insurance

Insurance will be the big one for you. Cars over 15 years old have gotten expensive to insure. I'd call in to a local old skool insurance brokers and ask them for some examples of models that are cheaper to insure in your situation. You'd be surprised sometimes which cars are cheaper to insure than others. I know no 19 year old wants to hear this, but I'd put off any car purchase as long as you can, they really are a money sink.
