No, our defence most definitely cost us the league. Palace away, we're 3-0 up, and our defence f*ck it up.

Drawing that game had no impact on the title or what result we needed on final day to win the title

Cracking result in an awful game

    Positives
3 points at a very tough venue
    Clean Sheet !
    Clyne looked really really good
    Lovren looked solid
Firmino looked lively when he came on
Coutinho sparkled in patches and great goal
Ibe ,while not a great game he did not shy away , going to be a big big player for us
Bentekers offers us something different up front
Can again looked good albeit in a cameo in the centre
Gary Mac on a Liverpool bench again

    Negatives
Original formation was daft 4 attackers away to Stoke ! no surprise we had no real chance on goal in the first half
Waited far to long again to change it
Matchday Squad seemed bizarre 4 attackers on the pitch 3 on the bench , no midfield option other than Can ,and it was obvious from kick off that if 4231 did not work it was a midfield player that would be needed to change it
Lallanna was muck and went hiding should have changed him at half time
Milner ,Hendo did not look great together and offered nothing creatively in those positions. They have too much defensive responsibilities playing there on there own ,yet we have nobody to get the ball to our 4 attackers.
Couple of really sloppy back passes that could have been disastrous.
I felt Gomes looked a little out of his depth , don't want to be too harsh as he is so young , but several bad decisions through the game and looked confused with the ball. Match saving clearance though.
Very few (if any ) Goal scoring chances created.
What was the plan A today , What was plan B ? for Coutinho to score a wonder goal ?

Its Game 1and you can read too much into it so cheers and lets enjoy it , at least we are not arsenal tonight !
I think the squad we have is good enough to challenge Top 4 at least, but I will be holding off on placing my bet a little longer , Not convinced we have the strategy right yet

Had to fastforward my way through the game before work this morning but overall it was fairly expected average first game away to Stoke. We all know they're a difficult team to break down, especially away. We started with what, 4 new players? 18 year old at left back. While Gomez did really well I don't think I'd be too comfortable with him starting all our tough upcoming away games. Some better attackers could really go to town on him and ruin his confidence. A DM behind Milner and Henderson would be nice but I think people are being very harsh on them as a pairing. They weren't that bad at all. Milner really adds some steel in the center that we've been lacking. Benteke had a few bright moments. Was nice to see him shrug a defender off with ease and hold the ball up. I'm sure we're bound to see a few games this season where he's absolutely unplayable. Overall it wasn't great but it wasn't awful. Lots of work to be done and plenty of time for the players to gel. 3 points by far the most important so overall not a bad start.

Any news on how the new stand is looking with just a week left to get things finished.

The real reason Sahko wasn't in the squad today.

Today was like the last time we went to the Britannia except we conceded 6 less goals.

    Progress right there

we were ****e today, just pumping long balls up to Bentekkers, should have held on to Big Andy so. Team didn't look hugely interested until Phil scored, it was probably just nerves though. Hopefully.

lol at that post and everyone who thanked it tbh.

    Nah.

Your Lombardi quote is great and everything, but has nothing at all to do with the point.

I know what I want from someone on my team if we lose - thats for the players to ****ing man up, take responsibility and make ****ing sure it doesn't happen again.

And abso****inglutely not just start pissing and moaning about all the external factors that cost them, ignoring their own involvement and responsibility. That's the behavior that started this discussion.

I'd be sad to see Lucas go but Rodgers does not play with a DM and his new staff could have the same philosophy.

I think the side that finished the game yesterday will be the starting XI in a few weeks. 3 man midfield is the way to go we were very poor until can came on.

Nobody remember our start to the season 2 years ago? We were at best, average, and at worst, muck, in the first 5 games or so! Rode our luck in 3 1-0 wins, drew away to Swansea, lost at home to Southampton!

Had my best poker face on in the Boothen End of the Brittania yesterday surrounded by Stoke's finest citizens. Did a lot of clapping at random times to make it look like I was supporting them. Mainly winning throw ins. When Coutinho was about to hit it I had a feeling it was going to be buried.

Was a bit like holding in a massive fart in mass, quite an out-of-body experience!

Great to win on my Liverpool debut. Now to complete the perfect day by getting home & getting the shower curtain through the wash before bed

I hope the Lucas stuff is lies.

I still think not signing a DM is going to kill us this season.

Honestly, I think we can live without Lucas. We have Milner, Henderson, Allen and Can who are all natural central midfielders, and all are good options. The likes of Rossiter could fill in for cup games.

    I dunno.

We weren't really tested yesterday in midfield.

We have a better record with Lucas in the team. It was pretty stark in contrast last time I seen it.

Time will soon tell as our run of away games is as tough as it gets.

I can see better teams cutting us up in the middle

I like Lucas and would prefer if he stays for now, but I think the way we are set up, it makes it difficult for him to stay. For a start, if we're going to play two holding players, then we realistically have five players who will look to fill those two spots (Milner, Hendo, Can, Allen, Lucas). Can will always be favoured because he plays multiple positions and brings something different. Milner is our new signing who came because he wants to play every game. Henderson is the team captain, but can also operate higher up the pitch. Allen seems to be happy to be rotated. That leaves Lucas as the odd one out. He can only play one position (the holding role) and he probably expects to start most games. Given the players we have, I think it's impossible to keep him happy, so I would consider letting him go.

I'd like to keep Lucas for the tough away games, ya know go away to the bridge or Old Trafford and make a team play for a draw. However that isn't Rodgers style, the only reason Lucas played so much last season is because we weren't scoring goals and we were leaking goals all over the place, bringing in Lucas solved one problem but didn't the other.

Rodgers is looking for greater balance in midfield, you would imagine Can, Milner and Henderson will be enough. You also have Allen and Lallana who can play there too.

what about letting Can step up?

Can isn't a DM though. He's a box to box type player. Putting him there would lose some of his impact.

The issue, IMO, is Can, Hendo and Milner don't have the discipline to stay in front of the back 4. Lucas does.

At 29, Milner would be a great DM for us, if he was willing to play there. It would free Can and Hendo to do the running.

    Step up to a DM?

He isn't one. He's better attacking, as is Milner and Henderson.

That's 3 attack minded midfielders. Some balance is needed.

Milner has played the role for City on occasion, and he was quite good in it. It makes total sense to me that he'd sit deeper than Henderson.

What's badly needed is a return to a time when centre mids at the top level had the ability and brains to both attack and defend, and to organise themselves so that they covered each other when doing so. Gobbewi'dadayuz...

And one of the excuses for moving Gerrard there, was to extend his career. Watching him yesterday, he actually reminded me of Keane and Lucas, in the way he was mopping up/blocking etc.

Absolutely, Milner as the deepest would make the most sense, Can and Henderson could be a very good box to box midfield pairing. Milner could play the "quarterback" role that Gerrard did, while been much more disciplined and mobile.

Can has to start IMO and so do Henderson and Milner that leaves Lucas out.
