    Regardless of any rules, it sounds like Anna's not feeling on top of the world at the moment. Supporting Tyrone or some other losers (Kerry, Mayo) would just lead to more disappointment. Her current plan sounds more sensible ;)

    So to deal with the most important issue first.... the rule is county first, then province... however, since the Dubs are highly unlikely to meet an Ulster team (notwithstanding Meno's advance calendar planning), the second rule is, if you are in a house full of Dubs, married one and gave birth to one (well two, but the youngest one is agnostic), plus my parents are both Dubs... then it's up de Dubs! at least against Mayo. :D

    I will of course stick with the province in the other semi -- despite the theatrics! :p

    Hey Anna, +1 to FBOT01*'s post. When he puts it like that....Anyway, the most important thing...THE most important thing...is that you enjoy what you're doing.
    Enjoyment + pain during a lsr can = immense satisfaction during marathon training but it doesn't sound like yours is the 'right sort' of pain and you're definitely missing the enjoyment.....

    Remind me/yourself again why you're doing this and is it so important that you couldn't a) scale back expectations or b) postpone til 2016?
    You've been on an up-buzz before this blip and of course it's not realistic to expect to sustain that but I hadn't thought you were done up-buzzing yet.

    Good luck with whatever you decide and PS have you had bloods etc checked recently for iron/ferritin levels etc?

    *despite what some people think Dublin fans will not be rooting for Kerry on the day, or on any day!,

    But all this is just a distraction to the bigger issue, your marathon training si back on topic :)

    I like the sound of up-buzzing... I want some more of that!

    Seriously, great input above from everyone, and FBOT probably did hit the nail on the head (hate to give him credit but there you go :)). Even though I have much more of a base this year, the plan is a big step up from l'il ol' Hal. The LSR's have been bothering me though, much more than last year... not sure what's going on with that, but I will get the bloods checked.

    As for why DCM this year... main reason is because I hated DCM so much last year and wanted to do it better, that's a good reason, right? :eek: also because I've been enjoying the training this year and seemed like I could build on that. But I'm not hung up on it, if I can't get back on track this week, I'll scale back and focus on the half.

    Same as FBOT... As usual :p he also says that first time he did the plan, he found it a big step up too and only ever did 90% of the lower end of the mileage range...

    The only thing I would say is that (as you have pointed out) the plan does have a minimum weekly mileage, I honestly think it's required in order to be able to safely and comfortably do the sessions and the long runs.
    I'm seeing that the long runs of late have been 50% of the weekly mileage which is too much and probably why you are dreading them (physically and mentally). I'd say if you are not able to hit the weekly mileage then scale back the long runs accordingly. The long run should be at an absolute max 40% of your weekly total.

    Thanks Meno, I'll keep that in mind... and try to up the miles earlier in the week. This is the first week in a while that I'm not disrupted by travel, so no excuses.

    Monday 10th August: 10 Miles easy
    16.3K @ 6:23/km; 10.1 mi @ 10:16/mi

    Decided to try to get this week off to a good start. Considered trying to last week's LSR today but listened to D's advice and didn't (sometimes I do listen). Lovely run out the sea front and a loop of St Anne's. Home along the seafront, finishing up with a loop of Fairview park. A light breeze at my back on the way out turned into a gale when I turned back into it as usual, so came home at a crawl.

    Legs felt good the whole way, no pain and not as wrecked at the end as I was last week. So I'm taking that as a positive. :)

    Wednesday, 12 August

    So the plan said 10-12 Miles including 8 miles alternating: 1 or 2 mile warm up then 8 miles continuous alternating PMP + 20-30 seconds/mile and PMP - 20-30 seconds/mile. 1-2 miles warm down.

    After getting out the calculators, I decided to convert my Garmin Connect to miles and stick with miles... so programmed in the workout as follows:

    PMP: 9:44 (4:15 marathon)
    PMP+: 10:00-10:15
    PMP- : 9:15-9:30

    When I downloaded it to the watch, the watch helpfully converted it all back to Km for me :)

    So off I went on a glorious day out the sea front (breeze in my face on the way out, felt good) and into St. Anne's, where I did most of the reps. Even though I put in a decent pace range for each lap, the bloody watch was beeping at me constantly, especially on the slower laps, because I was 'not in the zone', usually too fast. So if anyone saw an oul' wan on the Avenue in St Anne's, grumbling at a beeping watch, it was me. On the plus side, this run flew by without having time to think about the distance.

    Now, my PMP is slow, so PMP+ was at my easy pace and PMP- didn't feel hard either. I stopped at the cafe in St Anne's for water, helping myself twice to their free jug for customers... Irish parks should really have water fountains. I redeemed myself by buying a bottle of water the second time.

    Back home along the sea front, feeling warm by now. I was almost surprised when the laps ended, then a few Km of cooldown. I did the DG check of myself -- no pain in my legs, a bit tired but feeling GREAT.

    Stopped at the local spar for my new favourite Chocolate milk protein drink. Got home and realised I had something crusted on my nose -- was afraid at first it was dried snot, but relieved to realise it was only chocolate milk. Morto. :P

    Alternating Splits (1 mile each):
    10:09, 9:14, 10:02, 8:56, 9:48, 9:14, 9:46, 9:05

    Jayzis, working in miles makes me realise how slooow I am. :)

    Total: 11.8M @ 9:44. Before the OCD brigade complain, that's 19Km @ 6:03.

    So the whole run averaged at MP. Hmm.

    Anyway, delighted with this run, felt great throughout. I'm all for distracting myself from the distance by having intervals. Being 'in the moment' is so over-rated. :)

    Are you sure about the 4:15 marathon time? I thought you'd be aiming for sub 4. Just saying :-)

    The more of these quality MLRs you do the less daunting the (easy paced) long runs will seem, I promise!!

    Thanks Chickey! McMillan puts me at 4:02 based on HM time, but 4:15 seems enough of a stretch for me at the moment... if I come skipping home after a 20 mile LSR, I might look at that again :cool:

    and no, I still think in Km... !!

    Thursday, 13 August... Recovery Run: DONE! :D

    Not sure why I'm so proud of myself for this :) a leisurely 3.4 miles @ 10:37/mi or 5.5km @ 6:36/km

    What a spectacular evening in Dublin, sunshine on the sea front... love it!

    18 mile LSR: 18.02 MI @ 10:39/Mi; 29Km @ 6:37/Km
    260m elevation gain... just saying. 3 hours 12 minutes of struggle and bliss

    I have had a good week of running this week so was not dreading this LSR... almost looking forward to it. The plan called for 20 miles, but given the longest I've done was a horrific 15.5 mi 2 weeks ago, I decided it would be wiser to aim for the 18 miles I missed last week.

    We're in Donegal again and one of the great things about this area is there is a great network of little roads that are mostly traffic free and great for running. You can't always rely on the maps because 'roads' can disappear or become impassable tracks... but that's part of the fun. Picked a loop today into the hills with a couple of things in mind -- one, avoiding the biggest bloody hill at least in one direction and two, having a net downhill last 4k. I avoided that big hill alright, and replaced it with a 10k steady climb... Crumlin Rd drag, let's be having ya!

    What a beautiful day for running -- sunny, but not too hot, a bit of a breeze, blue skies, shadows on the mountains. It's a good day in Donegal when you get to see Ben Bulben, Errigal and the Blue Stacks in one run. And bog, lots of bog. And plenty of Donegal flags still flying in the heartland. Aww.

    After 16k, my lovely back road through the hills came out above Ardara onto the 'main' road (it's all relative, but there was some traffic). Ran on the main road for about 4k, then took the turn towards home and to cross that damn hill... I took a gel here, no harm but who knows if it helped. Slogged up the hill, it nearly beat me and at the top I did a Rocky-style victory shuffle, knowing it was mostly downhill from here. Yes! I'm over the hill! (in more ways than one).

    My last long run two weeks ago was a horrible painful experience. Today I felt good, really felt the effort even after about 10k, but kept doing the DubGal pain check -- breathing was fine, energy levels were fine, legs were a bit sore but not too bad. I kept it slooow throughout. I did stop once or twice to take pics and once or twice to walk a few metres. I was very happy to hit 29k and turn the damn watch off. I carried about 500ml of water with me, but was gasping for more for the last 3k or so. My hearty porridge, blueberries, nuts and seeds breakfast kept me well sustained.

    Knackered now, legs are sore and I'm creaky but not to a worrying extent.

    I was also very happy to take my runners and socks off .... what a relief that is. I have two lovely little blisters on my third toe on each foot. About to tuck into a piece of leftover pavlova now with no guilt whatsoever.

    47.2 miles/76 Km for the week... yeeeee haaaaaaw. finally hitting the target.
