You can cash your prize bonds in any time you want. There's no risk involved.

    It's a terrible investment.

You're pretty much guaranteed to lose money as inflation is eating away at your investment constantly and your chances of 'winning' are miniscule.

What can you invest in that's guaranteed to make you money?

What can you invest in that's guaranteed to make you money?

A deposit account will guarantee to earn you some money but after tax, the returns are not much better than the 1.6% Prize Bonds pay out.

Of course that 1.6% is not evenly distributed but if you have a decent stash in Prize Bonds, there's a pretty good chance you will have regular wins in the €50 -€100 range.

The cheques from Killarney are a pleasant feature of Tuesday mornings!

Nothing - but prize bonds are pretty much guaranteed to lose you money when you allow for inflation.

    Maybe for some.
I'd want a lot more than 1.25 % for my investments, - at least 5-6%.

leaving money sitting on a deposit rate is also a terrible 'investment'.

please let us know where you are guaranteed to get 5-6% return on an investment that is 100% safe.

Check out PrettyBoys thread on prize bonds and you will see he definitely isn't losing money.

I think my posts and points have been reasonably clear.

If you don't understand them I can't really help you further.

No they haven't! You cannot name one investment which is completely safe and guarantees you 5 or 6 percent as you suggested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 24,103 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

You're going to have to explain this one...

It's easy. If buy one ticket you have a roughly 1 in 8 million chance of winning the jackpot

If you buy two tickets, you have double the chances, or 1 in 4 million
If you buy 4 tickets, you double that chance again, or 1 in 2 million
If you buy 8 tickets, you have a 1 in a million chance and so on.

Basic maths dictates that if you buy 8192 tickets you're guaranteed to win the lottery

    Ban billionaires

    You're the one suggesting stuff.

You should probably read things more carefully.

You said you would want at least 5 or 6 percent from an investment. Name one investment which guarantees this, and where your original investment is perfectly safe and can be withdrawn at any time.

Can you use your basic mathematical skills to tell me how much 8192 lottery tickets would cost?

Plenty of long term investment bonds will offer around the 5% p.a. mark guaranteed.

Personally I don't get hung up on the guaranteed bit myself - I understand you seem to be a bit obsessed with it and that's fine - some people have no appetite or ability to handle an element of risk.

My investments are structured around balancing risk against return by ensuring my portfolio is diverse enough to handle market fluctuations.

I've consistently enjoyed returns of between 6-9% over many years.

If you want a guaranteed loss on your investment - buy prize bonds.

You obviously don't understand the word guaranteed. I'll leave it there.

Whether you win depends on the extent to which the six numbers you picked match up against the six numbers randomly selected in the draw. That won't be affected at all by the number of other tickets sold. It just depends on which six numbers you picked, and which six numbers are drawn.

How much you get if you do win is affected by how many other tickets are sold. The more tickets that are sold, the more likely it is that others as well as you will win, and the pool of prize money will have to be shared with them.

Even if I was the only person to buy a lottery ticket this week, I would still have the same chance of winning if every person in the country bought one. The machine picks out a random selection of six balls and a bonus and whether anybody has that combination is completely irrelevant. Do some people seriously believe the machine picks out a series of six numbers from all the tickets bought??

No, I assumed you meant it didn't matter how many tickets you bought yourself.

When you have a good chunk of money invested you have a decent chance of making more than you would on interest in the bank

How much did you invest out of interest? I've a chunk of change that could do with putting somewhere.

The winnings between May and now would cover about 6 months worth of interest in the bank. Obviously I've just hit a good run of luck at the moment, but there's always a chance I'll win the million :pac:

I have a theory that if you buy a decent chunk of bonds - say 1000, you will likely win 50 or 75 within the year. This has happened twice to us. Only sorry that the second chunk which was 5000 was not bought in 5 x 1000 lots at intervals...

As for the Euromillions, I ran a syndicate for about 7 years. Good number of people in it, contributing €1 a week each. I was buying around €40 to €50 euros worth of tickets each week (quick picks)(not every week of the year). I think we won a bit over €100 once, the rest of the time it was under €20 a week, often nothing. I don't have the figures but I reckon over the 7 years we 'invested' about €7000 and won back under €2000.

Your theory is correct. A chap on here has a thread about it.

He invested 25k in prize bonds in 2011. He regularly wins 50 quid. He has won 2k so far. Think thats more intrest than he would get at the bank.

But we only won once on each batch!

That's the trick. It costs so much to buy the 8192 tickets that it's not worth your while. Crafty lottery operators

8192 lottery tickets would cost just over 32k.

If I spend 32k on lottery tickets Saturday evening I'm guaranteed to be a millionaire?

If this works I'll give you a few grand for the tip ;-)
