Ireland doesn't consider August to be Autumn.

The meteorological summer months are June, July and August. This is used by Met Eireann, the farming science and support services etc etc

August is only an autumn month in worn out primary school nature studies and pagan calendars.

Ireland's temperature/precipitation has so little variation year in year out that the division of seasons in terms of sunlight is much more useful, making the summer now over.

It's dropped to 32 degrees here and feels really cold.

Why is the weather the way that it is?

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

It's been a great summer so far. Nice and cool. I've hardly had to wear shorts this year, which is great.

No such thing as bad weather (bar storms and hurricanes), just poor clothes choices.

Well here we are the last day of summer 2015. A very poor miserable summer full of bad weather and tragic news stories.

The dream of a good Summer is never worth it, is it?

We'll trudge on through the Autumn, hopefully see another year.

this year is getting especially bad press due to the fact that the last two summers were very good , we have never had three good summers on the trot and only get two on the trot every few decades , last time before 2013 and 2014 was 1976 and 1977

this summer is not especially awful , its not as bad as 2012 ( worst ever ) , 2009 or 2008 , doubt its as bad as 2002 either

Yup. 2011 was also dreadful. There was actually some very warm weather this year, just not much sun.

Autumn is beautiful, mild with leaves everywhere. I love it, it has the nicest light too.

I'd love to know where you can buy these pagan calenders? I went looking for one last year for 2015 and had no luck, so I ended up with a donkey sanctuary calender instead....

As far as I know, August has always been an autumn month

They go to the beach on Christmas Day in Australia.

Or at least Scott and Charlene did back in 1989.

We go swimming on Christmas day too. Nothing stops us.

We did get a nice summer but overcast. A few blue skies. It was warm. It wasn't too bad. It wasn't the best either.

I did save on sun cream this year and didnt buy any and I didn't get burnt with whatever blue sky there was. That says something because I always get burnt.

It has been in school. But I like what other people are saying August is still summer.

Most of the Northern Hemisphere considers it summer

Meteorologically Summer is June July and August.

This old nonsense about the month of the seasons come up on Boards every Feb, May, Aug and Nov.

Astronomically Summer is May, June and July.

Yeah but who said 'meteorologically'? It's just a local, astronomically defined description.

Are you still telling people that this summer is nothing unusual as well?

The month of July is not yet over, yet it is already shaping up to be one of the most miserable in recent years.
Some of the parts of the country have already had more than twice the monthly average rainfall and there is still three days left in the month, which, it will come as no surprise, are forecast to be wet and windy.
To date this month the weather station at Cork Airport has had 158.2mm of rain. The monthly average for July is 78.8mm.

If go by astronomical seasons then OP is well wrong.
    Astronomical Seasons
    Northern Hemisphere

Spring: 21 March to 20 June
Summer: 21 June to 20 September
Autumn: 21 September to 20 December
Winter: 21 December to 20 March

August is the most expensive time of the year to book a flight, maybe barring the run up to Christmas. Kids are off school. Students are off college. Lots of people are going on their summer holiday in August. Politicians are off...whatever it is they do. Its the silly season. The Six One News will be a half hour long for the whole month of August.

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it's a duck.

But couldn't that be because it's 'Summer' elsewhere, like the Balearic islands?

Expensive flights from Ireland in August might indicate that Summer is considered over in Ireland, and ongoing elsewhere.

I have heard Evelyn Cusack say more than once that the meteorological summer is June,July and August so that will do for me.

From my memory,August was nearly always the hottest month of the year. The first few weeks in September seem to be always good aswell.

Today is not the last day of summer.

Sure most people go on their summer holidays in August.

Kids are still on Summer holiday.

Only in Ireland do people think this and also think that February 1st is the first day of Spring when it's march.

People need to stop using the pagan/celtic calender.

Why? Its our heritage! And autumn rocks!

Why is June 21 called midsummer's day then... huh?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,353 ✭✭✭Cold War Kid

Schools should be back so from their summer holidays if summer's over.

End of Year, start of school year, or should that happen in December/January???

Midsummer's Day (not to be confused with the Summer Solstice, whcih is what you;re thinking of) is actually the 24th and is based on a 13-month calender.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.
