My dad has an old lapierre bike, 8 speed shimano, think it's the old model that was below tiagra (2300 maybe). Looking at upgrading some of the parts to make it a ten speed, know I will need new derailleurs and shifters but does anyone know if the front crank will work ok with a new ten speed chain? If I could avoid getting a new crank it would be a lot cheaper overall.

It might work but there is a difference
in the spacing of the teeth etc and chainsets aren't that pricey.
