Police are looking for 3 youths who dressed up as golliwogs and the Jackson 5 for some event in Scotland.

It was done on TG4 a few years ago in a talent competition where one man went as the Jackson 5, blacked up, and had 2 black puppets on each side.

How it got on, I'll never know, but the judges just sat there with open mouths.

My brother has about 20 of the soft toys you could get if you saved and sent off the wee tokens off the labels.

He tried to sell some but was told they were racist but there are people willing to pay €€€€ for them.

Nothing against the PC brigade personally, a lot of it is common sense, but things do become entirely sinister when police investigate becomes the norm.

I would, from my uninformed perspective, think that it's not as "serious" when cultures that do not have a long history of wronging black people do something like this. But I think we may have imported the "wrongness" of it from the United States, and taken on a lot of baggage that is the baggage of Americans, not just "white people" in general. For instance, the tradition of Svarte Pete in Holland (?) - there was a fuss about that too.

I think golliwogs in particular are a bit dodgy, because they were meant to be stereotypical representations of black people. But, say, dressing up as Obama (or the Jackson 5) shouldn't particularly be off-limits because you're white any more than dressing up as...I dunno, Lady Gaga if you're black. If you do, logically you can't just ignore that your skin is the wrong colour. But the whole blackface thing, because of the times when it was done for the sake of mocking and when black people would be punished severely for protesting the mocking, is just off-limits in general to whites.

I'm not sure what could be used to whiten your face - chalk or flour maybe! But if it's not being done to be insulting, I don't see a major problem with it in either direction.

I would be interested to hear the view of someone that isn't white, mind you.

When it's being done with the explicit aim of being insulting is when it needs protecting the most.

I would too, but their view should have no bearing on whether it becomes a legal matter, nor should anyone elses.

The entire "whites privilege" nonsense ignores the fact that the real dominant world culture isn't the "whites", seriously are the Belarusians, Fiins and Latvians running the world?, but the yanks. Including the black yanks.

Dressing up as the Jackson five is a testament to Anerican hegemony. It's a tribute to American cultural power.
