New Wheels... What Tyres (or should I bother?)

Ok, driving an e12 corolla, currently on stock steelies, tyres are 175/70R14. I have the opportunity to pick up a set of 16" alloys. The tyres on them at the moment are 195/45R16

Question is, how much would the change in wheels affect ride, fuel etc etc

Should I bother getting these wheels, or would I be better with a set of 15" alloys with a higher profile

Right, so to reply to myself, having worked out the overall diameter of both wheels, the 16" wheels and tyres will end up being about 1/2" larger, google would suggest that this increase is doable, anybody got any more insight

Personally as I age I find the lower profile tyres very harsh by lower profile I mean<60 profile.
They also don't deal with potholes as well as higher profile tyres.
Newer cars probably have suspension more suited to lower profiles but the older E12 are best on a 15" with 65 profile tyres.
That said if you want to try bigger wheels then work away, you might find you can deal with the increased noise/harshness as the handling is probably a small bit better with lower profiles but unless its a sporty car I wouldn't bother.
In fact my OH's E11 has 185/60 14 on it and I find them poor enough, thinking of going to 185/65 next set.

Thanks cj, I had been looking for 15's, but got a very good deal on the 16's, that's the only reason I was considering them

I have had more trouble with Alloys and slow leaks in the past 4 years than in the previous 15yrs with steelies.
If I could have found 15" steelies for my Mk1 Avensis I would fit them instead of the 15" JDM Celica ones I have now, Its a matter of taste but Steelies give no trouble compared to Alloys and are much stronger.
I know they look a bit crap in black but painted silver they look fine.

I agree with CJ, I've had most of my somewhat expensive pothole issues with tyres less than 55 so would not even consider a 45.

I like this calc as it is easy to change sizes quickly, the first 2 are your stock and new ones

When I got my 16 alloys on the same car it had 2 x 205 45 16 on it and 2 x 215 40 16.

It was noticeably harsher over bumps ect but the roads aren't too bad around here for the most part.

tyres for 16s are significantly more expensive though.

the diameter of a 175/70/14 is 600.6mm

the diameter of a 195/45/16 is 581.9mm

so even though the new wheel rims are bigger, due to the tyre size, they actually have a smaller diameter than you old ones so they will look "lost in the arches" i'd say.

So could I go for a higher side wall on the 16's? Without affecting the speedo etc to much?

Scratch the above post, just looked at ad's link, playing around with it, 195/50 gives me the closest match re. speedo etc.

Genuine corolla alloys from the Luna model suits those cars best imo.

I would agree with you Johnboy, buy wouldn't have the money to drop on them at the moment. I've attached a picture of the wheels, if anybody is interested

195/45 r16 tyres are not cheap

15s would be cheaper

The OE, cheaper still

For the e12 these alloys are the most suitable I think.
