The Purge

So my sister and I were watching the Purge last night and ended up discussing whether or not we'd purge if it was real and if we did what would we want to do.

We both agreed that we'd want to steal as much money as we could.

For anyone who hasn't seen the movie the premise is that once a year there is a 12 hour period known as the Purge where all crime is legalised.

So fellow boards people, would you purge and if so what would you do?

Nothing out of the ordinary. I try to live my life in a way that doesn't hurt any one not because it's the law but because I'm a presocial mammal and as such have a strong sense of empathy.

I would cycle on the footpath...like a mad thing!

Lots and lots of rape probably.

Well, one rape at least. That's probably all I'd be able for in a 24 hour period. :(

Haha we did mention that and driving the wrong side down the road :D

    I don't think we'd survive very long!

I would illegally download The Purge and The Purge Anarchy and then delete them because they are utter rubbish.

I'd murder all the screenwriters that come up with pathetically stupid ideas for films.

Potentially decent concept in a movie, very poor execution.

I would probably do very little except arrange for the entire family to be out of the country for those twelve hours.

In fact I'd probably emigrate completely if this was a "thing".

Yeah, I'd make sure the holidays co-incided with the event every year.

It's effect on society could be interesting though. As it'd be the lower orders who suffered most fatalities (those who couldn't afford to get away or the type of scum who'd stay for the scrap / to try and settle an old score etc.), it could result in a very wealthy economy.

This question comes up every few months and my first thought is, "well, someone watched that movie". Purge: Anarchy is better.

Apparently the movie is based on Belfast on July 12th

I'd set something on fire, and then I'd steal a fire engine and extinguish it.

I'd drive around obeying all traffic signals and indicating like a good road user. I used to do it in Grand Theft Auto. That's the real anarchy, doing what you should do when you don't have to.

Is it a Karen Carpenter biopic?

I'd murder all the screenwriters that come up with pathetically stupid ideas for films.

In fairness, as Seamus suggests, The Purge was an excellent concept for a movie, just not very well executed.

Basically a Police state allows, with an eye on population control, people to do what they want one night a year. It also keeps the unemployment level at around 1%. They have some rules though: you can't kill certain high level politicians or use weapons above a certain category grade: bazookas etc.

Some would suggest we already allow a certain level of anarchy in society in an effort to keep the economy strong, population down etc. I'm sure those folk will be along any minute now to point out just how :)

I liked the film though, thought it was a little over slated by the critics. The first one at least.

The second one is actually pretty decent, because it introduces the lower class struggle and sociological aspects behind the Purge.

But thats totally ridiculous. Its like saying a great concept for a movie is one day a year the government sends everyone up on air balloons and then for some reason this is a solution to the worlds problems...

Personally if I was in the purge I'd probably try rob money from some super rich person/business who I felt had acquired it illegitimately or cruelly or something so I could live with my self after. I'd also acquire as much drugs as possible a stockpile for the rest of the year.

You and your sister would have to get to a bank/whatever, which would be guarded. Rob it and get the money somewhere safe when the streets are full of murdery rapey loons. Not the best plan.

You say it's a riduclous idea for a plot and yet then say:

I would suggest that if it was such a 'ridiculous' concept you wouldn't be wasting your time telling us what you would do during a purge.

Oh and that is very much part of the film by the way. As soon as the time comes, we see crazy expensive security systems being put into effect on the homes of the rich.

Ppssstt watch the sequel. It deals with how the lower classes struggle. It's still not that great, but is an improvement.

I'd probably drink a pint of Guinness before it settles, eat liver without onions and use the toilet when the train was at the station.

LoL hit a nerve there apparently. Were you involved in the movie Nacho.

I am on boards trying to waste time.

We didn't really think about it past that being what we'd do if we did Purge. I'm going to have to think about a strategy :D
