A word I hate is CHIPOTLE.

How does everyone pronounce it? I say chip-ot-lay. Is that right? I try to avoid saying it because I think it's offensive to the ears.

    Jallep-ehnoes if I'm feeling it.

    Chipottle for the other one.

Bruschetta is another favourite - an Italian colleague of mine got into a serious argument with a waitress over that at one point. Great fun to watch.

See, that's a little pet peeve of mine - why pronounce the first half of the word in Spanish, and then give up half way through and pronounce the rest in English? And then return to Spanish just before the end?

Doesn't put me off the chilis, though, it just occasionally makes me rant at my husband :D

How should it be pronounced? Halla-pay-nyo?

If I've been saying it wrong all this time, I'll hang my head in shame now when I go to my local greengrocers. :o

I'm all for proper pronunciation but unless I'm in Spain I can't bring myself to say KHAW-REE-TSOH.
    Churreetzoh for me :)

    I'd say hal-eh-PEE-nyo and kaw-REET-zo.

    And keen-wa for quinoa.

No idea if any of those are right/wrong!

Another one that came up recently was Chai Tea ... I pronounce it like Kye, a colleague insists it's pronounced She-ah.

I don't think there's any one correct way, the Spanish would be halla - puh - nyo (as close as I can get the spelling there), or if you want to go English jalla - pee - no.

It's only the mixing of the two that sets anal old me ranting. I get the same way about chorizo, Ibiza, Peugeot... it's daft, but everyone needs a pet hate, no?

    Quinoa: Kwin-OH-ah? Keen-WAH?
    Paella: Pah-yell-ah? Pah-yay-ah?
    Jalapenos :Halla-pee-no? Hallah-paynyo? Halla-pee-nyo? Jallapeeno? Jallop-eh-noes? Hal-eh-PEE-nyo? Chill-ee pep-er?
    Chipotle: Chip-ot-lay? Chipottle? Chi-pote-lay?
    Chorizo: KHAW-REE-TSOH? Churreetzoh? Kaw-REET-zo?
    Chai: Kye? She-ah?

I usually pronounce it "Is there chilli in this? You could have told me! Argh, argh, it burns! Why do people put this agony in food on purpose!" Usually accompanied by actual wailing and gnashing of teeth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,946 ✭✭✭✭Neyite

    Quinoa - now there's a thing...

If it was pronounced Kwin-OH-ah, I'd probably be more inclined to eat it. But the generally-used pronunciation of Keen-WAH sounds pretentious to me & turns me off.

And so ends my random Tuesday morning musing while sipping on my cuppa at my desk before all hell breaks loose... :)

I totally read that in Father Purcell's voice. :D

"KHAW"? I can't pronounce that in my head! I say Churreetzoh as well. Although over here, if you order that in a restaurant, they have no idea what you have asked for unless you say "chor-it-so".

    It's 'ch' like 'chat'. Ch-ai.

That's an excellent name for a restaurant - fee fi pho fum :)

It's a soft 'fuh' I believe, without making your mouth go oooooo. Like that.

Yup, 'fuh' :). My Vietnamese colleague gave me his mum's recipe for pho recently. I can't wait to try it when the weather cools down a bit!

The place I work at has a chipotle item on the menu - the amount of people who ask for 'chipolata' is astounding

In a somewhat related note, the first time I saw Butterflied Chicken on a menu I assumed it was a mistake, and should have been Butter Fried, so I ordered it, and wasn't disappointed because the butterflied chicken actually tasted like it has been fried in butter.
