I find myself getting a little paranoid in the course of my day to day life, like on my walk to work for example. It's like everything is a threat to my legs...the stairs, a wobbly cobblestone, an uneven footpath...It would be just my luck to trip and hurt myself! I never felt this way before I started training for the marathon! Anyone else feel this way or is it just me?! :P

Wait until you start tapering for the race!

Me too! Have signed up for the great Dublin bike ride on 13/9. Will be cycling with my cycling club but totally paranoid about a crash!

I had interval training tonight too. Last week I figured out how to use the lap button on my garmin (I'm so smrt), but this week I discovered that there's an actual intervals programme thingy. Well. I'd say my workout is going to be all ooooover the place when I plug it in :o

Man it was hard. I didn't wear my HR monitor, and so I just ran by feel, I definitely ran too fast for the intervals. I'm wrecked.

    10 mins w/u
    6 x 4 mins intervals (75second rec)
    12 mins w/d

Aw man I came onto this thread with the intention of bowing out due to some niggling injuries and hoping to focus on triathlons (just for this year!) but after reading the last few pages I'm now rethinking my decision again!!

oirishfruitie: It looks like you were added to the spreadsheet but you were getting someone else's miles added to your total :) So I moved you to a separate line. You've done a 13-miler last weekend, right? If not, you can now add/correct your miles on your lines in Wk 4 and Wk 5.

And yes, do answer Dubgal's questions! :)

Hi oirishfruitie, welcome and yup just sell your soul to me answer those seven questions and off we go :)
    Thanks lads! :)

Caught a bug (other than the marathon bug) last Saturday week and was laid up for most of the week. Went out last Thursday and did 4 miles easy but my legs felt like jelly. Tried the lsr on Saturday but had to stop just after 9 miles as the stomach was feeling queasy again. Went out last night and 4 miles easy felt exactly that, much better. Wore the garmin but didn't look at it until near then end to check I was near 4 miles and was just 2 seconds per mile quicker than it should have been. Might go without it tonight.

Sorry to hear that TSO but you did the right thing by listening to your body. Good to hear that you're giving the 'naked running' a go too :) No need to completely lose it (just yet ;) ) but it will give you more confidence in your judgement etc. Hope all well now!

can barely manage 5k at present but i've over a year to change that!

Ah great to hear slingerz. Best of luck, it's amazing the difference a year makes! Consistency is the key to successful running so as long as you are consistent over the next 12 months, you will get there :)

Whats with all the intervals runs? are these running club sessions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,508 ✭✭✭ratracer

I done my 'naked' run today, planned on it being 6.5km, was 7k when I mapped it later on Strava. Ran it at a comfortable pace, always able for conversation. 7km took 43mins, so about 6.10/km I think.

It was odd having no technology, but a good way to gauge oneself also.

    BTW: happy birthday Woopsie!

Well made a bit of a mess of that tonight had interval training 5*400 metres with 120 seconds recovery. Have never used the lap button on my garmin before so wore two watches just in case ! I'm such a professional. I've Never done interval training before either so was interested how this would go. Headed for St Annes park avenue where my running mentor at home had told me the distance between the two benches on the ave was 400 metres but apparently I wasnt listening (we will agree to disagree !!) it's every 4 benches is 400 metres !!! So my interval training only worked out at 5*200 metres. Thought I had done something wrong alright as my time was too fast so I was getting all confused about my pace. So just ran fast every two benches !!!Ah well lesson learned .... Husband is always right !!! Well some of the time. Am totally stressing that I haven't completed my required miles today ... I nearly went back out again !
Sorry Mrs Mc that made me smile. Onwards, with the thought 'something is better than nothing' :D*

*what was he doing lounging aroundat home anyway! Really, he should have been out there monitoring and encouraging you :D Shame ;)

 definitely do NOT kill yourself on a session like that. Long intervals with proportionately shorter recoveries - IMO - should be comfortable enough. It's a learning curve alright :)

My advice paulers06 - fwiw :) - is scale back the expectations on pace tomorrow and focus on effort levels instead. Increase the recovery too if you need. And if you don't feel great at any stage of warm up or during the session...bail.
If the cold goes down below your neck, stop running till it clears up. It's too easy for a cold to change into something more debilitating and persistent if it goes into the neck and/or chest. Keep us posted won't you?
I've an easy run with turnabouts tomorrow. Supposed to be Thursday's run but Thursday is ma biiirthdaaaaaaay so I'm mostly going to be sitting and eating cake :D
And don't forget, 'keep the hard days hard and the easy days easy'.....and always follow a hard day with an easy one. Skip the turnabouts if you can :)

4 mile trail run with the club tonight, it was tough going. Average pace was 10:58 min/mi overall. Think I'll have to rejig my training for Wed and Thursday now.
We did one almost 2 mile loop to warm up and then 2 miles on a different that had a constant climb for one mile and second mile had a bit of downhill through the woods.
    Splits were
    10:50
    9:35
    13:11
    10:15
Tougher than I had planned to be honest, errr

Hey everyone can anyone recommend a few hotels. Need to book one for the day before marathon. Somewhere near the start

    Mespil hotel
    Double tree @ Hilton
    Sandymount hotel
    Brewelys ballsbridge

All reasonably close, if you use trivago look for hotels in Dublin 2 or 4 and you won't go far wrong distance wise. Also there are nice b b b's & guesthouses in ballsbridge area so try those too

I've been sticking to my physio's advice. After 10 days with no running, I eased back in with 3 x easy 20 mins runs over the past 7 days. No niggles, so hopefully I'm on the mend. Back with physio tonight to (hopefully) get the all-clear to get back into the HHN1 plan.

Prior to commencing the HHN1, I just ran the same 6k loop 4 times / week - usually at very similar paces. Physio reckons this lack of variation was a contributing factor to the dodgy hip. He also commented that people "over 25 years of age" (as he so delicately put it) have to contend with general wear & tear. I passed the quarter century a long time ago. I'm closer to the half century at this stage!

Lessons learned & feedback from physio - vary my routes & pace to exercise the full range of my muscles / joints, otherwise, I could end up back in the same situation again.

One other thing - I've noticed on Strava that I've been getting kudos from other Strava users for my runs. I wasn't even aware of this feature before, so if any of you are on here - thanks for the encouragement!

Ugh, off to the Physio myself tonight, might see you there ZV Yoda, we go to the same practice!

Felt a bit of a twinge in the side of my lower leg, near the ankle, just as I was finishing my run last night. Pulled up and walked home. Felt fine to walk on this morning but sore to touch and after a mornings running around work it's now very sore to walk on.

Don't want to take any chances with the race on Sunday so will see what she says tonight.

I have been guilty of the same type of repetitive training in the past as well. Picked up some useful advice, including alternating the direction of your running circuits to ensure that the camber of the ground is offset (particularly important for roads and footpaths which drain surface water away). It also provides a change of view, which is no harm.

I had just noticed this morning that you had added a note to the google sheet about being injured. Good to see you back in action.

So my HM PB is 2:02:41 in the race series half last year.

I'd like to think I can beat 2 hours this year so that would be 9:09min/mile

Based on that I should be able to do the DCM in 4:30 which is 10:18min/mile

Based on that my last LSR was 14 miles with an average pace of 11:12min/mile

Did 5 miles just now. I couldn't bring myself to leave the Garmin off so I stuck in my pocket and just ran.
My average pace was 9:43 whereas if I was running with the watch I'd probably try to stay around my PMP.

    What is that telling me?

Actual times are below if it matters:
    9:53
    9:58
    9:44
    9:17
    9:40

You may be selling yourself a bit short on your realistic goal for the half this year.

How did you feel on your run? Was the effort easy? Could you have carried out a conversation at this intensity?

It's hard to know how easy is easy iykwim but yes I could have chatted at that pace (maybe not very long sentences though :))
