I remember REM playing Marlay some years back, and Stipe's vocals just couldn't hack it. I saw them later on in the Point, around 2004, on the last night of the European tour, and it was a brilliant show - band were really in party mood. "Don't go back to Rockville......."

I was at that REM point gig and it was indeed magnificent. For once a gig in the point with good sound.

The gig itself was filmed and recorded and released as a live album / DVD and it's well worth getting. Turn it to 11 and you could still be there !

A lot of people highlighting gigs by the likes of legacy acts like The Stones, Dylan and Clapton etc... Acts charging best part of 100 euros in many cases and no hunger or drive no just going through the motions. I've seen both the stones and Dylan and both meh. The only act of that nature who were amazing were the Who on both occasions blew the roof of the gaff and put everything into it.

Aerosmith in Marley Park a few years ago - can't even remember what year it was. Admittedly the sound wasn't great on the night but the band was just appalling. Apart from their awful performance, they left out most of the hits - something they have a tendency to do live, apparently. Awful stuff.

I was at that gig and I loved it, the reason they leave out so many hits is because they've got a huge catalog to play from.

I have all there albums and knew every song they played. I thought it was a great set.

Worst gig by a comedian was Tim Minchin few years ago in Vicar street. First half of show using a mother and daughter as comedy bait. Second half playing old youtube material on piano and being ****e at it.

If I ever actually meet him I'll do time, and be a world hero for it

    Prick.

New Order supporting Red Hot Chilli Peppers in Lansdowne Road, 2002. I love New Order - and that's why I went to the gig, I'm not much of a fan of RHCP - but it was a disaster because N.O. weren't the right fit as support. Most of the RHCP fans didn't have a clue who they were and thought they were crap and gave them a load of abuse, with the result that New Order's bassist got really pissed off with them, and the tension just took away from the gig, ruined the atmosphere, and they couldn't wait to be done. Only time seeing them and it was such a disappointment, as I'd really been dying to see New Order in concert.

I was at that gig. I was 17 at the time and hadn't a feckin clue who new order were. They got slated. Booed at the end of every song. Pretty much took away from the chillis too as you said. The crowd was very young and new order just didn't fit in at all.

To make it worse I bought a disgusting burger from a van afterwards and was sick on the bus on the way home.

    Phil Collins...

Fans love him, I'm not a fan, my ex girlfriend was.

Much to everyone's delight he played for over 3 hours...almost everyone's delight that is.

I wasn't at the gig but going by the setlist I don't see what the other poster is complaining about, loads of their big hits in it.

Oxegen in I think 2006, one of those crappy indie bands that were everywhere back then, The Kooks or something, I don't know. Anyways most of the crowd, myself included, were only there because they were waiting for whoever was on next. Band were playing pretty badly so people started giving them abuse, then someone threw an Ireland flag up on stage. Now obviously the protocol in that situation is to drape it round your shoulders and go "Yeah!" or "Woo" or "We love Ireland" or something along those lines. Muppet of a singer just picked it up, looked at it like "dafuq am I supposed to do with this" and tossed it back. Write off after that, you couldn't hear them over the booing.

Also The National a few years ago at EP. In fairness though that was a great gig, it was the fact that I started hallucinating that ruined it for me. Boyfriend at the time had to bring me back to the tent, he was raging, he loved The National.

    how about Pope JP II

he had an audience of 1 million in the phoenix park back in 79, and he didn't even sing one song, bad form in my book

Slane this year, for the Foo Fighters, all for logistic reasons. Crap venue, you have to be in a certain strip of the field for good audio. They had the field absolutely packed which meant especially with all the rain the field was destroyed before long. It was too long a day, they had support acts running from 2:15 - 6:30 and then the Foo Fighters weren't supposed to be on stage til 9pm - way too long of a break and I find if you're standing that long at a gig, you're a bit tired when the headliner comes on. Fair play to the Foos, they were awesome, and they came out at 8pm instead - if they hadn't I think a third of the crowd would have left, us included as we were just so fed up. They did their best to get the crowd pumped, but after hours of standing in the rain, the crowd was very meh. People actually started going for cups of tea instead of pints.
If the Foos were playing any of the stadiums or an indoor venue I would definitely go see them again, but I'll never go near Slane again.

As for best gig, I went to AC/DC this week and they were absolutely fantastic. They were electric on stage!

Good call. I missed Saturday Swap Shop because of him. The folks wanted to watch the whole damn thing on TV. At 5 years of age I was devastated. I threw a colossal strop. :p

Retuned after a while and continued in a depressed mood .
We left before the end... shambles

PS She also made me shell out for Barbra Striesand...that didn't go well ,or the relationship

Shane McGowan - Yeah I know what your going to say, what did you expect?. I saw him in The Heritage Hotel about 6-7 years back, was part of some trad festival thingy that was on in Portlaoise at the time. I knew things were'nt starting off well, when the admission was free in and the hall was poorly attended. McGowans band consisted of Mundy and Sharon Shannon and members of De Dannen. Sharon Shannon did her part, was actually good, Mundy warbled out his songs , "Galway Girl" included (how i hate that song!!!). Anyway Shane McGowan was meant to be on stage at 10pm, didnt show up till 11pm, worse for wear (surprise, surprise!!!), slumped over the microphone stand , tried to straighten himself up, fell over twice, bellowed into the microphone and practically crawled off stage after 15 minutes, then guess what, good old Mundy starts bellowing out "Galway Girl" again , before you know it, the natives were getting restless and I think this permeated its way up to the stage, where Mundy quickly wrapped up his set and the band stomped off the stage quickly, it was eventful , I'll give you that.

The Police - I know people have mentioned this gig at Croke Park and I can understand why, atmosphere was a bit dead, plus a lot of the songs went into self indulgence with overlong solos and instrumentation, it seems that Sting and the bands attitude was, lets turn up, play the songs, collect the cash and get the f*** out of here. Was a shame, considering the exorbitant prices for the concert in the first place and talking about prices.........

Also someone mentioned Tom Waits and the gigs in the Phoenix Park, I actually thought he was brilliant and it was amazing seeing a true legend that had'nt performed in Ireland since 1987, so it was a great thrill to see him. Yeah the weather was terrible that week for the 3 gigs concerned, the marquee or "Rat Cellar" as it was known, but I enjoyed it, The tickets were expensive but Waits and the promoters passed a levy on the price of drink and food, so it was'nt too bad. if memory serves me right, I think that was the first concert in this country in which you had to produce photo i.d for proof of purchase for tickets in order to stop the touts making a mint on tickets.....

The best & worst gigs I've been to were both Ryan Adams gigs. He played the Ambassador with the Cardinals - 5/6 years ago and it was brilliant. Great sound, excellent set list and the band was so tight. Very little interaction from Mr Adams, which was to be expected.

Went to see him solo in the Olympia a few years back. Dreadful. He sounded ok but wouldn't stop complaining about people making noise. Real childish ****e like when someone got up to go to the toilet - "Jeez, you guys drink too much" or some guy sneezes and he says "you guys should drink more orange juice, vitamin c blah blah blah". Twat.

I was at that Ambassador gig alright and it was ****ing awesome and some. Ive seen him a few times since and the only one i didnt like was that solo show.. ok it was decent but there were loads of talkers and drunk people being twats so although he is a bit precious at times you cant blame him in fairness... i wanted them to stfu too..

By the way that Cardinals gig in the Ambassador came out somewhere online not long after through his fan community a soundboard recording and still sounds ****ing deadly to this day... also he was pretty decent when he played earlier this year at the same venue too..

If you drank lots of orange juice like he was demanding wouldn't you still need to go the jacks all the time?

I was at that Olympia gig and I enjoyed it, thought Adams was in great form, his p*ss take of the CMA's and redncek culture was hillarious. I remember him talking about all the people sniffling and sneezing, he metioned he should get some fruit upstage and smash it with a sledgehammer, "Gallagher" style (American comedian) straight into teh audience.

However there are times in some of his performances, where he can act like an arrogant git. Like he is talented and he knows it, but sometimes in a smug way that ,can be pain, like "im up here on stage and your down there" sort of attitude, that can be annoying sometimes..........

Was at an Alternative Comedy night during the Ed Fringe few years ago

Now I like myself a bit of Stewart Lee and Tony Law but my gawd it was a load of pretentious **** by people who weren't as clever (or funny) as they thought they were

An example, for TWENTY WHOLE MINUTES a guy in a gorilla outfit sat on a rocking chair saying nothing as a guy dressed as a Viking and covered in fake blood pretened to paint him
And in fairness that was one of the better bits

It was more the atmosphere of the place I hated - was dripping in smugness

Comedians - That abusive Scottish pr1ck Frankie Boyle. I walked out half way through, jokes about vaginal cancer and disabled people. Nice one.

Most people loved it. In fairness it was a ticket someone gave me for free , fortunately I didn't pay. I know I was in the minority.
I love frankie.. Funny as fook.

More or less, but I thought I'd throw a few beers back and "get over" the more offensive bits.

    My mistake.

    Your too sensitive

The Olympia gig was really good. Some azzhole tried his best to ruin it by constantly shouting "nice hat ryan" in his stupid d4 accent!

For me Adams worst gig was a few years back in the marquee in cork... He just didn't want to be there

Saw them at Oxegen in 2008, was hanging around the main stage as i wanted to be up close to the front for RATM. Actually sat leaning against the back barrier of the pit and fell asleep. Snooze inducing.

I honestly don't remember for sure who it was. You couldn't spit without hitting one of those bands for a few years there.

Hozier at Slane this year. So depressing. It just didn't fit in with the upbeat high-energy Kaiser Chiefs/Foo Fighters that followed him.
