Hit some interesting turbulence flying out of Gatwick this morning. Some of the worst turbulence I've experienced. Made worse as absolutely no communication from the captain, although I'm sure he was concentrating in flying the plane as it was a bit of a rollercoaster for a time.

Anyway does anyone know what level of turbulence was forecast this morning in the region, just for future reference?

I know there was a deeply unstable flow pushing up from France with some sheered supercells.

Flight was the EI out of Gatwick at 9_10am

What does it mean to "secure the airfield" for a cat 2 approach?

Probably some of the recent Direct Entry first officers then. Cadets only do base training in day VFR conditions. Direct entries are new guys to EI but have experience from other companies.

ILS approach categories are I / II / III, in order to ensure the required accuracy for these approaches, they must ensure that nothing gets in the way of the ILS beams, airports have CAT I and CAT II/III signs at the holding points of ILS equipped runways. When they go to CAT II/III operations they must make sure that all vehicles and aircraft stay behind the CAT II holding points.

Aircraft in Cork seem to be having a little trouble this evening, 1 cancelled and 2 delayed over 45mins.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately the A350 will not be operating into SNN today.

That's only part of it, airfield secured means the peri road gates have to be closed and locked and any random workers removed from the area, airfield works with vehicles crossing to and from have to be shut down in case someone gets lost or left behind.

Think it went in to replace another aircraft, apparently one had a bird strike in AMS.

    Any idea for what reason?

Its N671US, the one that was called out of retirement to replace the lightning damaged B747.

They could have rushed it a bit!

I can't ever remember so many diversions in such a short space of time as we've had lately.
