Got a call from the IFA staff re the benefits available to members.

Although I pay my money every year, I claim little in the way of benefits from them. She mentioned about the 10% saving from Bord Gais electricity over Electric Ireland – has anyone switched over able to advise if it’s worth the hassle?

Any other benefits that people are getting?

do a bit of homework first, usually a few quid with fbd as well, but can be expensive since the storm in feb '14.

electric ireland offer a 15% discount compared to the 10% bord gais do, if you run a search on boards there are numerous threads on ifa, if you are an exsisting electric ireland customer just ring them to avail of it

For the last 3-4 years Aviva is beating FBD for my insurance by on average 150-200 euro/year. Virtually similar cover

I think joining IFA for the benifets is a smoke screen.
Lads need to decide if they believe in the organisation and that it represents them enough to shell out the money.

That's the bones of it. Shopping round suppliers will provide just as good deals so it's really down to basics.

If you think they will be useful for you or not.

Agree FBD are not at the races as regards insurance.Their prices for the same cover are way off the mark, esp. in the last few years.

Anyone joining IFA or any other farm organisation should do so on the impact their policies, positions or lobbying will have on your farm and disregard the book of "penny off" vouchers that come in the post with the membership bill.

Looked at one such booklet in a neighbour's house recently and to be honest nothing really worthwhile there.

Anyone use the Vodafone membership package.
OH is currently with O2/3 with unlimited calls to any network, free texts and so many monthly minutes to UK and International numbers. He also has so many GB/MB's ?? of internet.

"Virtually similar cover" a long way from "exact same cover"

Have gotten them to quote twice and that's why I didn't change, not the same cover

There is no such thing as exact same cover. I my case I found that it was easier to get employer liability with Aviva as I have one of the lad on the books I also have a small bit of employer liability for casual worker for the farm. This is to cover if I had someone helping.

The house cover is similar I think FBD insure contents for a fixed amount and you have to specify on Aviva.

    As I said virtually similar

I changed & when I got the policy & read the small print ,it was completely different that what had been discussed in the proposal . got my money back .

a couple of hundred € is a very small price for peace of mind. at least fbd put all the cards on the table & don't play from a stripped deck

FBD are the same as any other insurance company.Cannot understand why some farmers think otherwise.Have found them unable to match others quotes on farm insurance and out by a mile when it comes to vehicles or machinery.

Have only insured the farm with them once(introductary offer?).Decided to try them when their rep just about matched Aviva so said that might as well make Aviva/Zurich etc work for their money. When it came to renewal FBD were back up with an uncompetitive price.

I always price each company using the previous years schedule of cover and sums insured and ask them to point out any extra's or omissions etc in cover and then get each company to price the exact same cover(in as far as is practical)
In my experience FBD provide nothing that any other company doesn't.

As an aside my wife parked in one of their car spaces early this year inadvertently whilst visiting a neighbouring office and decided she should at least call in to price insurance(hers was due in a week or two).Having never dealt with them before she was shocked with the price quoted, almost twice what her renewal was coming into without even pricing around.

Thats my take on it anyways but if people are happy to insure with them and find them good value then grand but don't try to make out they are something special or the only insurer available for farm insurance.

As above, they're ok , nothing special, the only bit of an advantage they have is their local office in some towns, where the staff are generally good, and a help with a problem, much better than some ninny in Dublin who doesn't know or care where milk comes from. FBD are reputed to be a bit better / faster than others at the claims-handling - local offices can put a bit of pressure on the handlers.
Of course the big suits in Dublin are doing their best to close the local offices too, same old story...

Those local offices are nearly the most important thing about fbd. One of the few claims dad ever made was 'not covered by our your policy' the threat of the renewal check not going to the usual guy was enough to have the claim processed

Their head office is closer to me than the local office.
