I'm currently on JB and interested in starting my own business and availing of the Short-Term Enterprise Allowance.

As I have a few clients ready to go once the business is setup, can I start the business before the STEA grant has been approved?

No... you need to do up a business plan and speak to a case officer. But the fact that you have clients already would mean that you should be approved for STEA.

Thanks, any idea on the turnaround time? 2 weeks?

The problem is that if I take on a client, they may want me to start on the job within a week.

Just to clarify, this is for contracting, so I would be working within a company as a contractor. I only want to go down this path once I've secured the contract, otherwise I'll go back to permanent, but as I say they may not be willing to grant me 2 weeks to get things organised.

I wouldnt know the turnaround. You would need to contact your local sw office and ask to see a case officer urgently.
