Charged VAT on UK purchase even though I supplied my VAT number

    Hi,
I'm going to a conference in the UK and I supplied my company VAT number when buying the ticket. However, the company hosting the event have still applied UK Vat to the price of the ticket.
I told them that they should not charge Vat once I supplied my Vat number - am I right or wrong here ?
They are saying that as the place of supply is the UK (the conference is taking place in UK), they must charge Vat at the UK rate.

Am I correct or are they correct ?
Does it matter that this is a supply of services rather than supply of goods ?

    Thanks in advance.

Read this, (and it isn't easy!) -

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vat/leaflets/vat-treatment-right-of-admission.html

Given that VAT is largely harmonised the rules are likely to be the same in the UK.

You would generally be entitled to make a repayment claim to the UK for VAT properly charged to you.

Your company's adviser really should know all this.

You were right - it ain't light reading!

It mentions the following, which I think is the most important line - "Thus a taxable person from outside the state attending an event in Ireland will pay Irish VAT on the admission charge and will not, if he is established in the EU, account for the VAT due on reverse charge basis in his own Member State (MS)."

Assuming that the same rules apply, then they were correct to charge Vat.

Thansk for your help - much appreciated.
