So one of them quit running after a cycling accident and another after a car accident. Neither of those really back up the argument.

We all know running is hard on the joints, especially on harder surfaces. A lot of the older lads at work (fairly roundy looking fellas) delight in telling me this regularly. I don't think many of us will give it up voluntarily though.

God forgive me, and I'm no skinny malink, but when obese people tell me running is bad for me I really want to smack them.

I'm outside the fizzios. All cross your fingers and toes for me pleeeeease.

Can someone help add me to the excel file? I am useless at excel.

Also can someone explain what cross means for the HHN1? i.e every Sunday it says 'Cross'.

Thanks Jake! No harm in posting the odd week here when you start the plan. Have you not started a log yet?! Definitely fill in the mileage tracker sheet and best of luck with the 10k training. Keep us posted won't you?

the 10k training is progressing well, last week was the peak week @ 42 miles
and its taper all the way now with a tune up race this week(St Cocas 5k).
I'm confident of getting a PB in the 10k but I'm not sure about the sub 40,
    I need a 43sec improvement.

and as for starting a log........

    Every Sunday? Cross?
I think they're encouraging you to pray.

    (Or cross train)

So, I geeked around in Excel for a bit and realized the Boards.ie plan has exactly 600 miles in total (including all recovery runs). Add 26 miles for the big day: 626 miles. Converting that to the proper unit of length measurement means a cool 1001.2 kilometres!

    This. Is. Nuts.

Right, so inside of my foot was "visibly inflamed", the same place that was black from bruising earlier in the year. He did some work on it including dry needling, ultrasound, and some very very painful massage*. It's extremely tight. It may be related to my plantar but he's not 100% convinced. I'm going to wear a plantar sock at night (so sexy) to see if he helps.

My running marathon plan is now on hold and my work will be in the pool. I can do the 5 mile on Saturday but it's going to be a load of shyte. My foot was quite painful last night, today it's just very sore. I'm waiting on an email from running dude with instructions on exactly what to do in the water. It's going to cost me a bleedin' fortune too as I don't have membership of a gym with a pool.

I'm pretty pissed off and upset and all those things.

*massage always makes it sound so lovely, it was not lovely :(

Really sorry to hear that W, hopefully though now you have an idea of the problem you can start on the road to recovery. I'm wondering though why you are going ahead with the 5 miler? The sooner you rest & rehab the sooner you'll be back - I had similar injury and made similar mistakes.

Oh, because he was going to have me trying to do 40 minutes over the weekend anyway, I won't do the 5 mile in 40 minutes, but I've told him that and he's OK with it as long as I stop if there's any pain.

I'm doing a slightly longer version of HHN2, I'll only be doing 780km, there's a huge difference there.

So Sunday I did my last major cycle before DCM. It was 173 km and man did I suffer on the last 50km due to lack of food, crap weather and really not enough long range cycling done for the event. BUT - in all the misery of the last two hours of pedalling, one thing stayed in my mind - I will not allow myself to feel that sh1tty in DCM, so it's time to really stick with the plan. Except I'm on the way to France today so no running until tomorrow evening!!
    Let's go DCM!!

First run last night on the boards plan, took the easy 3miles from Tuesday and did it last night instead.
Tonight I'll be doing 75mins or so of field work cross training with my club.
It was a lovely evening for it, could have ran for miles (well plenty more than 3!)
Avg pace was 10:14 a mile (10:38, 10:01, 10:03) including running 1/2 mile uphill to start and 1/2 mile downhill to finish, focused on keeping my pace slow in both cases and watching my heart rate to keep the effort even throughout. I normally fly down that hill!

Run 1 of the plan taken care of this morning before work, 7.87k @ 6:35/km. I hope all my runs go as well, I loved it.

So sorry to hear this, hopefully it won't take long to clear up... but like others said, not sure the 5 mile is the best option for you... it's very hard not to get caught up in the enthusiasm and run too fast for your foot... plus, if you don't finish, it won't help your confidence either. I really think you'd be better off doing a nice easy 40 minutes elsewhere. :(

Have posted in this thread before but never answered the questions.
I followed the novice thread last year but had to bow out at the 20m LSR stage due to injury.
By answering these questions I guess I'm officially going to it another go this year.

What is your athletics background? Have you run before? What other sports have you taken part in and at what level?
Running about 2.5 years - not a lot done before that.

Have you raced before? If so what are your PBs? (Date and distance please!)
Haven't done a 10k race in a while now but best was 52:53 in April 2014.
HM PB is 2:02:41 (Sept 14 race series)

Do you still need to take walk breaks in your training ? (No problem if you do)
No but I do stop for a drink at a couple of public taps on my LSRs.

How much training do you currently do ? Distances, cross training - whatever you think is relevant to your current fitness level.
Last week was 3 lunchtime runs of 4 miles with an 11 mile LSR on Saturday.

How many days a week can you train?
Will stick with above for now but I know I'll have to switch to an evening once a week closer to the time to get a longer run in midweek.

What do you want to achieve? Dream finishing time and realistic finishing time? Or just complete it in no specified time?
Just complete really but would love to be under 4:30

What marathon programme are you following/intending to use?
    Hal I'd say

If he had been doubtful about it, I would agree, but he's happy for me to do it. Not finishing won't be a big deal. I'd rather that than not start. It's been too long since I had the buzz of starting a race.

The funny thing is, I asked him would I be better to just jog it and he said no, to just go for it, the faster I do it, and the less contact with the ground - the better.

If he wasn't who he was, I might reconsider but I do trust him, he's a good guy with some top athletes as clients, as well as being one himself. I promise that I'll stop if I need to :)

What is your athletics background? Have you run before? What other sports have you taken part in and at what level?
I ran a little when I was quite young - sprints mainly in community games. Have played Gaelic all my life training twice a week still to this day. Started taking up middle distance running non-competitively in last 3 years

Have you raced before? If so what are your PBs? (Date and distance please!)

Yes - have run the below distances quite a few times but here are my PBs:
    • Frank Duffy 10 mile 2014.....1:17
    • Barcelona Half-Marathon 2014.....1:41
    • Park Run 5k.......0.19:48
Do you still need to take walk breaks in your training ? (No problem if you do)
    Very rarely

How much training do you currently do? Distances, cross training - whatever you think is relevant to your current fitness level.
Gaelic season tends to consume my efforts from Jan to Sept which is my main concern in prepping for DCM15. Train twice weekly with matches generally every second weekend. Season already shot for us so I'm looking to focus my efforts more on running now but will still be training withmy club at least once a week. Generally an occasional jog or weekend Parkrun inbetween sessions.

How many days a week can you train?
    5

What do you want to achieve? Dream finishing time and realistic finishing time? Or just complete it in nospecified time?
    • To start and finish a marathon for the first time.
    • To run the Frank Duffy 10 mile and Half Marathon as part of the Race Series.
    • To assist my partner (also a first timer) with her training and preparation as well.
    • Sub-4:00 marathon is my primary goal - suppose to have a specific goal maybe 3:50.
What marathon programme are youfollowing/intending to use?
I had been intending taking one of the Hal Higdon plans but I want something more specific with times etc. I did look at one that Asics provided but found it far too complex. I've just discovered the Boards plan and it looks good to me -like the way it incorporates the Frank Duffy and HM plus in general it seems easy to follow.

Does anyone know anything about the International Friendship Run aka Breakfast Run on the day before the Marathon in Dublin.
Is it the last run that a lot of marathoners do? I just noticed the entry when looking at the race series list.
    It's a 4K run from the Convention Centre....info here

It was free last year, €15 this year.

It's just a very slow jog the morning before the race. Some people like a short run like that the day before others like to completely rest. The above is good for tourists coming as a lot of people bring flags and the like. Not sure I'd be paying €15 for it though.

Hi Dubgal72. Hope there is room for one more!

What is your athletics background? Have you run before? What other sports have you taken part in and at what level?

I’ve kept reasonably fit all my life. Long time gym member and played football, and tennis when younger. Took up running about 3 years ago and have been reasonably consistent since averaging around 25 miles per week.

Have you raced before? If so what are your PBs? (Date and distance please!)

Only raced once…Cork Half in June 15:
Cork Half-Marathon 2015.....2:14 in strong wind and rain……have a training best (Garmin) of 2:06 in late 2014. As this was my first race I took it handy, running at a pace I knew I could sustain easily. (10:15 per mile )

Do still need to take walk breaks in your training ? (No problem if you do)
    No

How much training do you currently do? Distances, cross training - whatever you think is relevant to your current fitness level.

Currently training 5 days per week. Typical week is 5 miles, 4 miles, 5 miles and 8 miles with one day cross training, usually 40 minutes or so on the elipictial. All runs are done at easy pace with the exception on one day when I push it a little.

How many days a week can you train?
    5.
However I am possibly the oldest runner on here at 55 years young. Recovery is key for me to prevent injury and fatigue. So every now and then I will cut back to 4 days.

What do you want to achieve? Dream finishing time and realistic finishing time? Or just complete it in no specified time?
    • To start and finish a marathon for the first time.
    • To run the Charleville Half Marathon in Sept as a gauge of my fitness before DCM
    • Sub-4:50 marathon is my goal. Anything less than 5 hours would be great for me to be honest.

What marathon programme are you following/intending to use?

Started the Boards Plan this morning

Love this thread, you are all so inspiring. Thank you.

Funny when you look at how good value the other races in the series are in comparison!

even if I quietly correct your omission of .2 miles (believe me you won't forget that last .2 miles on DCM day) = 626.2 miles....still such symmetry :D
    1001.2....so untidy
