I know that some Passat's have the troublesome BXE engines, but are some of these engines in Golf's too?

Planning on looking at a few different cars next week and just checking if its something else I should be looking out for if I stumble across a Golf!

To be honest for that money you'd expect that car to be straight and not messed with.

Try and get a cheap original front grill - the tacky and poorly fitted one makes it look like its had a tip on the front.

A simple thing but the rear parcel shelf being wonky and such an easy fix looks bad in the pictures.

Centre caps are cheap and would make a difference on the side view.

Genuine VW gamma radios can be had cheap secondhand and would look infinitely better that what's currently in there. Could sell the current one and recoup the cost.

Mention the mileage and either take off the rears or get front mudflaps.

All small things and would probably set him back 100 quid once the other radio sold. You would expect some broken bits on a car of that age and mileage but for the money he's asking that looks rough enough as it is IMO.

That's fairly massive mileage, and that plus the work that's been carried out as per the ad, would put me off big time as it indicates the car is starting to reach obsolete territory tbh
At that mileage and with the replaced clutch/belt etc, I'd be taking 1k off that price. Most people will see the work done, and worry more is on the way, rather than the opposite. To give you a comparator, I paid 3.2k for a Honda accord with 120k miles, same year, and it was auto which added a premium, tax wise there is not much difference. Manuals for an 04 accord at the time were about 2.5k

    In kms that's 332.8 kms

Strange view re obsolete territory, clutch & belt done is a big plus, mileage large and it should be cheaper of course.

    Your accord sounds very pricey.

It was actually pretty good value compared to the rest that came up over six months tbh autos are hard to find out there

I'd be taking the view of wondering what next could need doing on that golf

Suspension and electrics won't last much longer on it! Surprised the electrics lasted this long. They were not great day 1!

Big miles with history always trumps low miles with none.
As Stheno seems to be finding out with that accord and the plethora of issues.

Was there no history with the Accord?

If there was I would class it as unverifiable obviously.
OH well, sure I've been reading on this board many issue with it. Cars that are well minded and serviced on time, dont have underlying throttle issue or sustained wheel wobble.

    Success!

A mate of mine happens to have a load of Toyota wheel studs. 99% of Toyotas use the same wheel studs.

Just need to get some M8x1.25 bolts to pull the drum off over the weekend and a new wheel nut.

There might not be a throttle issue, and any car could have a dodgy alloy!
I dented a rim once, many moons ago. Got it heat-treated to repair it. No matter how it was balanced afterwards, it always sounded like there was a bearing going. There wasn't, moving the wheel to a different location on the car moved the sound with it.

If you were to give him the benefit of the doubt you'd think maybe he was confused with bear1's Accord.

Stheno's sounds like some minor niggles, a little "user adjustment" and one undefined issue (shaking pedal? wheel?) . I've yet to see any 10yr old plus car in Ireland with watertight verifiable history and from what has been confirmed so far there's nothing major wrong with it for a 10yr old car.

    Hardly a plethora of issues.

Overpriced for a private sale maybe but not for a dealer.

That what I wanted to say when I saw your post about the one you broke.

I hope a man you mentioned also have new studs.

If I was you, I'd avoid to put used ones in - they may last forever or break quickly - nobody knows that.

A new stud from toyota themselves costs €3.70+VAT. Part number 90942-02049.

Have two people around here got troublesome accords?
OH that explain a lot!! I read accord trouble and thought just one poster. Sorry for confusion and to Stheno for bad naming your car! :o:o:o:o

That would be long done, hate the debadged look. If your familiar with golf's, there's a little oval lip taken out of the bonnet for the vw badge in the grille to sit into. The previous owner went to the trouble of getting a piece of plastic, and filler, and filling the semi circle lip! Then they go and respray the full bonnet so it was completely camouflaged. A normal grille won't fit now, unless one goes hitting out the filler on the bonnet, which will only chip paint etc.

Yeah bear1 has had a very bad run of luck with a diesel manual accord.

Stheno just got a petrol auto.

Yeah my main issue with the car was that I didn't realise the accelerator is bolted into the floor and was driving it like the OHs merc. Once I stopped that pretty much as you say I've that one undefined issue, which I suspect is my still adjusting to the accelerator tbh, it's really long compared to others I've used

Auto accords tend to be much more expensive than their manual equivalents, I was shocked at the differences, and there are far fewer of them :). I looked at six in total, three 05s all of which were looking for 4k plus, and three 04s can't remember the price of the two 04s but they were in and around the price the one I got was asking. Mine did come from a dealer, it was serviced by them, ncted, brakes replaced etc so I'm happy with what I paid. I didn't want a manual.

Yeah bear has one too lol! He's the person who was listing all the stuff he's had to do. Mine as above is fine, I'm having trouble getting used to the accelerator and how it works :)

I did wonder when I saw your post! :)

Just wondering do people think this is "too close to sidewall" to repair(not my own car)?

I'll see anyway. I'll be getting 4 of them so they should be ok. The hard part will be getting the drum brake off. The thing is baked onto the centre bore.

Can I order Toyota parts online from Toyota Ireland? Where are you getting these prices from?

EDIT: Just noticed - the stud for the rear of the car is different than the front (it's a bit shorter). The part code is 90942-02047 and not 90942-02049. I better get it ordered so. The longer one may be harder to put in.

If you want to get them delivered you can contact Gavin at Cranely cars, he can order the parts for you from Toyota based on your VIN, thats who I use.
    Here is his email; parts@cranleycars.ie

OH don't get me started on drivers in cavan sure I was headed over to Arva there the other day to go Bradys to the vw dealer there to check out the new golfs but I ended up being cut off the road by micras and lots of other oap drivers

Do you think nobody sees your petty trolling?
Any more of this OH crap replying to Sthenos posts and you'll be banned.

So, went down to the Toyota dealership on the N81 and got myself a brand new stud for €4.

I asked for the correct part number but the guy just gave me the other part number which is longer. Bit of a pain but at least it's not shorter but longer.

I had to remove the bearing to be able to fit the stud into the hole.

Sorted now anyway, the wheel is held by nuts and bolts at last!

Got the ohs car services today, routine "big" service as opposed to the b service

Rear brake discs needed to be replaced , so that got done and the mechanic even went and checked the power on the battery as it's gone flat a few times (usually due to the oh not switching off the liights properly )

    All good :)

Actually I meant to ask, I recently met a colleague who was driving a merc e250, it was unusual to me as it's a coupe and I'd never come across one before, going by the reg it wasn't an important.

    Anyone come across these?
