Would this be a bad time to plead guilty to snaking the odd go on kiddie's slides and roundabouts and such? I'm only 43! :D

28 year old here. Tired of having to wait until night time to use the playground :(

Couldn't they make a few big playgrounds for adults?

    Which is grand.

I'm not taking about adults there with kids taking a sneaky turn themselves. I mean Gangs of teenagers who have no business being there loudly using foul and sexual language, spittin and littering around infants.

They'd want to be a fairly sheltered group of teenagers to be taking guff from a group of adults. Every teenager knows they're untouchable.

No teenager is untouchable they just need some education and motivation.

Ha, I'd love to see you give it a go. They'd have you filmed and up on front of a judge before you could say "it's not 1970 anymore".

If there are teens causing trouble at your local playground call the bloody police

Aren't you just sick of them?

I mean pubescent teens in playgrounds clearly meant for infants.

Now, it's a natural law that idiocy is part of being a teenager. Yet, all this spitting, screaming of foul language and littering take place in a space that is designed for and should be sacred for small children.

There they are, commandeering facilities meant for infants.

    Why?

Has our society become so infantilised that it is now acceptable for persons who were, a generation ago, of the age to start families and run businesses to now compete with four year olds for access to the swings?

There is a clear mental deficiency at play here but who is to blame?

(Note: Me and my behaviour in my teens are not cool and should not be held up as an ideal. Yet, in my teens at the height of my stupidity I never stooped to invading the space of small children, ruining their fun or intimidating them).

Better that they are hanging around the playground acting the maggot than roaming the streets with a belly full of cider punching up tourists, attacking passengers on the Luas, etc. Growing up there were always "big lads" on the playground. Some were dicks and would frighten smaller kids but they were never really that bad. And some were sound. They'd help you if you hurt yourself, borrow your ball for a kickabout and ask you if you wanted to join but you usually said no because they were too big. Let them have the ball anyway.

    They're not so bad.

I mean like 14-15-16-17 year olds guffawing and galloping around kid's playgrounds.

At those ages I was frequenting nightclubs, fornicating and driving illegally.

Why is it now acceptable practice to at those advanced ages to be intimidating toddlers by invading their space?

Are you sure it's the toddlers that are intimidated?

I have an adult autistic sister that loves swings and so I would frequent the odd playground with her when she spies one from the back seat window as we're driving along. Have received many an odd look over the years, but you get over it. Some swings are too small for adults anyway but a few are fine. Merrion Square, Malahide Park etc. There's a playground especially made for autistic and disabled adults at the back of Juniper Centre / Vincents on the Navan Rd. One of the swings can take a wheelchair in fact and swing the thing. Would love a shot on it :)

I gotta admit that at the mature age of in my late twenties, I -still- do love a swing.

Not that I would ever compete with small creatures for one, but if there's a swing in a park that will fit my rear end without any sprogs near it, I will totally go for a swing :D

as long as they're not hassling anyone , they're grand . you can't expect them to stay at home the whole time and there's not much else for them to do tbh

I was just on the swings earlier this evening.

Had to get off because my tummy got sick :pac:

I can handle the biggest rollercoasters but the swings always get me.

I went on the monkey bars too.

It's next to impossible to be an adult in a playground without trying out the swings.

I suppose it depends on the teens. Our local playground apparently had an issue with teenagers pissing on the equipment and generally being intimidating to little kids. I don't accept the argument that they've got nothing to do, they have all sorts of computer games, laptops, tv in their rooms etc. All in all they've a damn sight more to occupy themselves than previous generations had. They don't need to be occupied with something fun every waking hour. Personally, I think they're far too over indulged.

Agreed, although gym parks (they're all the rage in France, the elliptical yokes, yellow metal structures for exercising), and skate parks would serve the purpose of shoving them along from small kids playgrounds, while boosting fitness levels ! And it works, that's where my 14 year old nephew spends his free time with his skater/free running super cool dudes friends.
Last time I was there, they were grumbling about parents leaving their toddlers cycle their trikes on their patch. :)

OP, I get your point and I agree. In fact, a lot of playgrounds do have age limited equipment with signs stating so. Our local playground also has a no loitering sign too. 15 year old showing off guys tend to weigh a lot more and rough handle equipment more than the kids it's designed for.
One particular playground was very badly vandalized once, and I'm the same as you, I don't bring my kids to the playground to have them exposed to foul language, or to have their choice of activities reduced because a 15 year old girl thinks it's cute to flirt on a swing for an hour.

Tl/dr : I like your rant and I like to rant too, plus they're right little $h#ts them youngsters sometimes.

Thing about adults having fun at playgrounds is that we can all reasonably assume that you are all (not just poster quoted) less self centred and egotistical than your average teenager (although I can see the irony posting that in AH!), and yee might just notice the look of longing on my daughter's face when you've been hogging the swings for a while.

    Many's the teenager who wouldn't, or wouldn't give a $$hite.

    How good are ya?

I ask as, if you fancy yourself as being a dab hand at the feckers, there's these two guys up at the top of Grafton St most nights these days with this.. eh.. contraption thingamajig and along the top of it runs a metal bar and if you hang off for just 2 minutes straight, they give you are €100. Costs ya €10 for a shot now, but that's €90 profit (or thereabouts). So, there you are now for yourself.

Yes, I did have a shot, but only lasted 1m47sec :(

I don't think you should be painting every teenager with the same brush. I'm 16 and honestly there nothing to do so some days we could just end up sitting in a playground, while I can only speak for myself and my friends, we haven't caused any trouble. About 2 weeks ago, we were sitting in a playground at about 6 O'Clock and there was only 2 kids around, and it's not like we were sitting there throwing bottles at them, we were literally sitting on a swing, we did not start a riot and start randomly attacking kids.
People would complain if we were in a field drinking, if we were in playground, or if we're just walking around, like teenagers get a lot of unnecessary grief, remember you were 16 too one day.

Yeh one of the girls from my gym posted it on our facebook group, she would be well able, but didn't have the nerve to do it. I'm not in dublin at the minute but I'm pretty sure I could do it. Though, I've been on holiday for nearly three weeks so I might be packing extra padding :pac:

There are plenty of benches in grown up parks too.

Of course it's not all teenage kids, lots of well mannered considerate teens too. Still, I would question the need for the sitting/hanging out area to be a small children's playground.

I completely agree that it would be a brilliant thing to have a park (or section thereof) for teenage kids to hang around, with age appropriate equipment, in towns.

How about yourself and a few friends dress up well, discuss and prepare a few points you want to make on paper, and get an appointment with local councillors to let them know of your wishes ?
Who knows, this might get things moving in your town. you might not get a state of the art skating park, but you might get a hanging out area just for you guys.

Back in France my skater nephew and his friends did just that, and guess what, they got something for it. After all, you are the next generation of voters for these local council representatives.

At any point after puberty you have no business in a playground unless you are bringing a child there.

You know kids in third and fourth class are hitting puberty right?!!

    I.e. 9 and 10 year old children.
