Our front door is circa 70 years old, wood with sngle glaze panes; and then a large frame with windown panels in that also.

The panel on the main window broke a few days back; with a nasty big shard falling out of it.

It needs to be replaced, and we will replace all the glass panels as they are not safe if they break. There are six glass panels in total. One in the door, and five in the frame around it.

    The options are
SIngle glaze circa €350 to replace all.

Double glaze circa €850 to replace all.

New composite door plus frame. cheapest is €2500.

Any views on whether option 2, putting in Double Glaze would be a really material improvement over single glaze; or if on the other hand the thermal qualities of an old wooden front door are so poor that the double glaze wouldnt mean a huge difference.

    Thanks.

    I don't really mind Bryan.

Delete the DIY post if you wish; no one answered which is why I tried elsewhere.

The double glazing would be a good improvement, the price difference between the double and single seems high , is this because the rebate on the frame need to be deepened to take the double glazing. Door and window seals in Dublin 8 have some good draught proofing products for retrofitting to wooden doors, the timber will have a good u value itself if you can stop the draughts
