Was in Tesco opticians in balbriggan today and they have a range of Oakley prescription framesn all priced at two hundred Euro including prescription lenses if you need them. They are also polarised and eye tests are free

I need a pair of prescription sunglasses as I drive a lot with work and thought it was a good deal given that it includes the lenses, they are polarized which is more expensive and if you need it you get a free eye test

I priced others and they were all close enough that I was happy to pay the extra for the oakleys I'd a pair before which fell off when I was sailing and they were fantastic

There still a rip off.....how much does it cost the manufacturer to make them?

Like perfume, aftershave etc. glasses have a huge margin....

Yes,they are expensive, but definitely worth it. The lenses are really awesome, 100 % clear view ( no distortion when looking from any angle, excellent for cyclists etc.)plus lits of different options to choose from to suit the purpose .
The material on the ear and nose part of the frame are non slip, so glasses stay on and not slide off your nose when sweating.
It's definitely one of the best sunglasses that are available on the market.

It's not worth it but you have no other choice if you wanna go for the brand name....sounds like you haven't used many other sunglasses....

Lolz I love the types who must barge in, shout "that's no bargain" then run off before telling you you can walk into X and get these, or equivalent or better product Y for less.

Like a child dancing around chanting "I know something you don't know Na Na nana na".

Someone should be along shortly to say how big a fool you are not to invest in a sheet of welding goggle glass, a glass cutter and swimming goggles from the lost and found at the pool.

Oakleys also have a brilliant repair warranty service. I sent a pair back with a broken arm and they sent me a brand new pair.

I had a pair of prescription Oakleys that I lost at the first Electric Picnic. Great glasses. I've gotten cheap glasses from Zenni, but they were just ok for the money. Really tempted to take a spin out to Balbriggan today.

Price is certainly good,as I was quoted over 200 euro for prescription lenses only without any frame or eye test..

All the top cyclists wear them? Because oakley pays them to wear them....frames already have a mad markup (look it up if you want - specsavers even give you two for the price of one) never mind paying for advertising and branding too.

I put my two cent in here because it has been discussed before in cycling forums....fools gold....it's not a bargain....all glasses, aftershave etc. are ridiculously expensive...talk about getting flamed for hurting peoples feelings.....just because you have them doesn't make you anymore special.....

Polarized glasses can be bought for ten euro or so...do the same as the Oakely and offer the Same UV protection.

The frame and style are what you are paying for. Basically the name....scientifically speaking; any polarized glasses will match the quality of the Oakley Polarized...Oakley may just have different tint coating to them at times...but trust me that does not justify the massive difference in cost....

Frame material and lens materials are 90% the same in the industry...some color and non scratch coating differences...

Style and name is what you are paying for. Shhheeeesh.

Am sure there there are many othergood sunglasses out there. For me Oakleys are excellent, had pair I used and abused a lot for 10 years and couldn't fault the lense and build quality. To add in prescription /eye test this is a great BA if you need it, thanks OP

Oakley are in a totally different league. They offer a unique range of frames & lenses. You can custom design them to suit your specific needs. Nothing comes close & their reputation wasn't due to endorsements. They will last a lifetime as everything is replaceable.

All three of mine came from ebay at a loss less that €200 but you have to be very careful who you buy from.

Boots are running a promotion with 50% off all their sunglasses over €35

All prescription Oakley's in the UK & Ireland are made to order by Oakley in Athlone.

Oakley's ARE OWNED by Luxottica, its not even just a case of brand licensing. There's a discussion about it in the 60 min video.

Exactly & that argument always appears on BA. There is unquestionably a huge mark up on Oakleys. But no one else comes close to what they offer. I wear mine almost every day even as safety glasses. They are incredibly light but also very strong. The Oakley website lets you view various scenes through every lens together with UV & transparency specs. If you get it wrong, as I did with one pair, Oakley changed the lenses with no problem.

Yes, you've got it. A part of the problem is the lack of competition. You have no reason to believe good quality sunglasses shouldn't cost that much because there is nobody else making and selling them.

The monopoly of Luxottica is another point explored in the 60 min video.

Oakley were forced to agree to be taken over by Luxottica. Luxottica bought Sunglasses Hut - a huge chain of shops. They refused to sell Oakleys unless Oakley agreed to a takeover deal. I don't think that Oakleys have become any more expensive.

I bought a pair of M Frame Oakleys over 20 years ago & they were very expensive then & only sold in specialist bike & sports shops. They are now a collectors item & worth more than I paid for them :pac:

The prescription lenses that are included are single vsion not varifocal

I'd hope at that price yours are varifocal

I went over to Balbriggan today. They are Oakley prescription frames - not sunglasses. The lenses are the standard Tesco optician lenses. They were doing two for one on the Frames or one pair with polarising lenses. They only had 7 styles in stock, none of which took my fancy.

At two for one on designer frames it's exceptionally good value for glasses. Just not for proper Oakley shades.

You can get these from the lucky lucky, Del Boy lads in Spain for 10€, 7.50€ if you bargain hard with the lucky luck man.

Yes they are,I have my own Oakley sunglasses, but wanted to get prescription lenses as I can barely see in them, was quoted 200 just for the lenses, which is a bit expensive...

My oh got varifocals last year and was quoted over that in specsavers

Tesco weren't much cheaper about 20 e less but it was his first time ever getting glasses and no one in specsavers explained he needed varifocals so we went to Tesco with the prescription for a price comparison and an explanation of why it was Sao dear. The staff there were great to deal with

I'm thinking of getting him a pair of the oakleys for driving and I think in that case he just needs a regular set of lenses and not the varifocals

Just one thing to note some of the pllastic prescription frames couldn't take my prescription and that might be the case with your currently ones
