The Windows 10 Update Notification was installed as part of a recent set of Windows updates.

Click on the little triangle just to the left of the notification area, click on Customize and set GWX/Get Win10 to "Only Show notifications".

Reboot and it's back, the proverbial bent penny :(

I'll turn it on after I do my gaming stint this evening so :D

I've never got a Windows update...ever, this could take ages couldn't it :D

Are you sure it's not happening automatically? Start 'Windows Update' and on the left column click on 'View Update History' to see what's been happening.

MS releases a monthly big bundle on the second Tuesday, we see it the next day, the last one was Wed. May 13th. Do an update now and expect more on this day week - Wed. 10th with the odd update in between though apart from the (almost daily) security updates for MSE there's very little in between the big monthly bundles.

If you have never got a Windows Update, your computer is vulnerable to several dozen different extremely dangerous exploits at this stage (depending on when you got it) - in other words, are you CRAZY? :P

Good (p)review of Win 10 here. If you absolutely hated Win 8 then the reviewer is on your side ....

Even though Windows 8.1 did improve things, there's no escaping that with Windows 8, Microsoft was hugely complacent, buoyed by the success of Windows 7. It drastically misunderstood its users with a fundamentally changed user interface which didn't make any logical sense and was hard to learn. It failed us. It failed itself.

I'm currently in Windows 7 on my main PC, and havn't got any of these alerts or update warnings.

Is there something I need to enable for this to work?

My Windows copy is legit(I actually thought it wasn't, as my Da gave me a CDkey he used, so assumed it was bogus, and we have used it for years on different machines, turned out to be commercial key that had multi use)

I have Windows Updates disabled as I don't like taking all Windows updates, is it just a case of turning that on?

I'm reading too many people saying to upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 is a no brainer, so ****it might do it.

I personally prefer doing the "Upgrade options" as I absolutely HATE having downtime for my games, and needing to download all my stuff again (Games, programmes, settings, configs) but I might actually go for a clean this time. Did some hardware changes the last few months and I've an SSD not playing nice, and a HDD that isn't being recognised at all.

Summer time sounds like the perfect time for a full clean install :D
KB3035583 is the Get Windows 10 update.

I'm general, should you allow whatever updates it recommends? There can be quite a few! I often postpone them when I get the reminder but inevitably computer will give in , or if I don't spot it in time to postpone!

So the general consensus seems to be a yay for windows10? I have windows 7 and like it, boyfriend has windows 8 and I can't use it at all. Neither can he to be honest!!!!

You're more likely to encounter a problem if you don't install updates than if you do.

There have been problem updates on ccassion, but I keep reading about problems that otehr people had, and never actually meeting anyone who has had a problem. On the other hand, I have met people whose computers have been infected by a virus that would have been blocked by an update it they had installed it.

Windows 8 and now Windows 10 have even more robust mechanisms for handling any updates that cause problems, with automatic rollbacks.

The general concensus seems to be that for desktops and conventional laptops, Win10 is looking pretty good. For newer 2-in-1 laptop/tablet style devices, there is still some concern that the tablet mode doesn't work quite as well as Windows 8.1 does. But Windows 10 is supposed to be an evolving OS, so it is expected that there will be further changes made to the tablet mode (Continuum) by the end of the year that may address those concerns.

For most people though, there doesn't need to be a rush - you'll probably be able to try someone elses machine and see if you like it before you need to make a decision to stick or to upgrade.

Thanks for that. My fan seems to be playing up a bit so I might hang on and get a new laptop in a few months/year if it dies!

(As an aside, what is the general life-span of a laptop? ) In 12 years, I'm now on my 3rd!

I ask people can they afford a euro a day. If they can, then they can afford to replace a basic laptop after a year, or a beefier machine affter 2. If they keep a cheap laptop going for 3 years, they've saved €700!

    :D

I generally spend €350 - €500 on a laptop! The last one I had, the soundcard or something went. I probably should have gotten it fixed, I don't know. I just wanted a new one at that stage but I do miss my numerical keyboard! Have a HP g6 now, because it was red, and I like red!

Then my rule of thumb is that you should consider everything after 12-18 months as a free ride. There's no need to replace such a machine if it's still doing the job, but it doesn't owe you anything either, and if it needs to be replaced, go ahead, you've covered your costs. (And I say that as a cheapskate! When I consider how much money I spend on having a car that sits there doing nothing most of the time.........)

It's hard to justify a €100 service on a €350 machine, especially as the technology does move on relatively quickly. Personally, I hate numerical keypads I wish I could get a desktop keyboard that didn't have one, and that wasn't as cramped as a laptop KB either - that extra 3 inches of wasted space for a number-pad makes a mouse even more of an ergonomic nightmare than it needs to be!

And if you like Red, I guess you're never going to buy a Macbook anyway :D

Couldn't justify the price of a Macbook! :P I have an iPod but otherwise don't understand the fascination with Apple! (It was a gift!)

My latest trend is to buy 2nd hand DELL Latitudes in warranty and get them to fix anything wrong if needed :D

    - Got an E7240 a few months back. 12.5" Full HD Touchscreen, SSD, Backlit, Gen 4 i7 ... suffered the screen ghosting problem common to that panel and the backlighting didn't work.
NBD onsite warranty sorted all that out but needed cash urgently so sold it on a few weeks back for a €250 profit which isn't bad considering I paid €500 - half what they sell for on eBay

    - Got the larger 14" E7440 last week to replace it. Same spec as above except an i5 rather than i7. Fan/heating issue. NBD Warranty good till 2017 and all sorted now. Paid €350

Adverts has its uses after all :) Good value to be had if you're patient.

Not getting any joy with the Win 10 upgrade/reservation prompt though :( Have run the script on the MS support site and it's running the latest updates (8.1). Will have to be patient I guess!

I wouldn't be confident buying electrical things off adverts, and anything over €100 in case! I'm a coward like that.

Ah I know what you're saying... there's a lot of time-wasting and messers on it, not to mention the ads that are long since sold but still up, but if you check the feedback and meet to examine it first you should be ok.

I've bought and sold a lot over the years through it without any problem but patience is definitely needed.

The benefit of the Latitudes though is that as a business model they normally have onsite warranties rather than having to send it away somewhere for a few weeks, and if you get it transferred to yourself you're sorted in the event of an issue.

That'll just mean that AMD don't have official Windows 10 drivers ready yet, but they really should by launch time. Either way, AMD claim that their Radeons are already compatible with Windows 10 anyway: http://www.amd.com/en-us/solutions/software-partners/microsoft/windows

I've looked at the website just seems odd that it has not been sorted with windows 10 preview

You'd have to be patient even if had worked - the update won't be available for another 7 weeks! :)

It probably has, the "not fully compatible" is just a disclaimer because it won't have been tested as fully with W10 as it is with already launched Windows versions.

If someone installs the windows 10 download and for some reason doesn't like it, is there any way to do a rollback to W7 or 8?

Other than satisfying MS marketing people, what is the point in clicking a button to 'reserve' Windows 10?

I'm not anti-Microsoft but two members of my family had their PCs stolen and when they bought new laptops, they came with Windows 8 and as the family's one-man tech. support team, I had the job of helping them with the new interface. It was a fcuking nightmare so I prefer to wait until about 20 million people install Windows 10 and as soon as I hear that it's reasonably usable, only then will I upgrade from Win7 on my own laptop.

It'll preload it onto peoples computers before the launch date, as opposed to a massive surge of people trying to grab it all at once when it launches.

Not quite. I clicked to 'reserve' and it's telling me that 'once it's available on 29th July, Windows 10 will be downloaded to your device.'

So it looks like it will be a controlled 'push,' similar to an Android OS upgrade.

Make sure your pc is powerful enough to run windows 10,
ms always release an os as a beta ,to 1000,s
of users , to test it .
long before the public release ,before its in the shops .
Theres probably a website where you can download the beta from microsoft to try it.
They want millions of people to get it free,
    they are copying apple,
release an os with built in app store .
Apple gets 30 per cut of every app bought from the app store.
IF most people got windows 10 it would cut tech support costs,
improve security ,reduce the spread of malware .
    Window,s 8 was a disaster , a pc os designed for tablet users .
Most large companys just ignored it apart from the tablet ,windows apps.
windows 10 is designed more for desktop pcs ,for mouse ,keyboard control .eg for 90 per cent of users who dont have a touch controlled screen .
i hope it has a real start menu like a modern version of windows 7 for
    2015.
