Well, others here probably know a lot more about the Connaught championship than I do. They can appreciate better than I can, how he seems to have ruffled feather. I get that. But there are plenty other Sunday Game sofa jockeys and cute hoors who do a piss poor job of commentating week in and week out, or who talk out of both sides of their mouth when it comes to giving an honest opinion, or who just blather on without saying much at all, or who bring their own incredibly biased pov's to the table.

We all give out about TSG having the same boring old panelists on over and over and not giving fresh blood a chance. Maybe when they do have some new people on, we should give them a chance?

100% agree,I find Shane Curran an interesting character on and off the playing field, honest in his opinions....he made a total mess of his first night out but he is deserving of a second chance like anybody else. How many chances has Joe Brolly got?Totally unfair to compare him to a media savvy individual like Jim McGuinness with a background in sports science and sports psychology.I expect him to a significant addition to SKY's GAA coverage.

County elitism does not give one a pass on making highly insulting remarks on the merits of emigrants from London participating in the Connaught championship. It's what makes the GAA such a wonderful organisation...the inclusivity that is symbolized vividly by same said participation of our emigrants from London and New York in the Connaught championship.

Roscommon and Cavan would be as close to the football equivalent of Kilkenny.

Football mad counties with a dominant main sport.
Except they don't win titles like kilkenny

Have to say, reading some comments, I agree Curran deserves a second chance. I stand by everything I said before about it being a disgrace etc. but to say someone doesn't deserve a second chance is not right either.

So maybe a football equivalent of Waterford?

Yeah and also the follow on asking how many years are pundits on this programme talking about this very issue.

Very funny line from Mchugh about making his debut and the opposition full back wearing glasses!!

The FRC came up with a farce of a proposal last year for a 4 x 8 team provincial setup.
The losers of the Ulster and Leinster preliminaries would go into the Connacht and Munster championships to make up the numbers, so that each province could them have 8 teams for quarter finals.

As a fixture making exercise it was draft.
For example preliminary round loser could then lose their Munster or Contact quarter final, and then lose their 1st round qualifier before they are knocked out.

The likes of the FRC seriously need to try harder.

Oh and McHugh's glasses comment was very funny.

Because no "one" person has the will or the power to do anything about it. The president of the GAA is nothing but a figurehead. Unless he is a man of vision and is surrounded by other men of vision, eff all change is going to happen. They are proactive at the big picture stuff....the ending of The Ban, opening up Croke Park to other sports, the SKY deal, the redevelopment of Croke Park itself, etc etc.

But when it comes to the day to day running of the game, that is where they fall down. The 4 provincial councils have far too much authority & have the game by the balls. They are only interested in their own survival, their own agendas and not the overall good of the game. Usually, I'd be a fan of democracy, but not in this case. Until the internal structures within the GAA change, I'm not holding out much hope.

    ...steps down from soapbox...

PS RTE - I'm free on Sunday nights at 9.30. :D

The GAA is far too democratic for it's own good and it has repeatedly held back the games and continues to do so.

A brand new GAA series, The Marty Squad, will begin on on RTÉ Radio 1 this Sunday.

The programme will take a fresh look at the GAA Championships every Sunday evening from 6pm-7pm.
Presented from match venues all over the country by Marty Morrissey and Paddy McKenna, who will be in Dublin, the show will take a different look at the weekend’s GAA action.
Reporter Brenda Donohue will be on the road at the big matches each weekend talking to fans and sampling the atmosphere.

The squad will be bolstered by weekly appearances from former Roscommon goalkeeper and Connacht championship winner Shane Curran, former Kilkenny All-Ireland winner David Herity and former Cork camogie star Anna Geary. And there’ll be a chance for the real experts – the supporters on the road home – to have their say too.

Morrissey said: “To win an All-Ireland takes a great squad of players… and it’s the same for radio! I am delighted to be part of this new squad and to work for the first time with Paddy McKenna and to renew acquaintances with Brenda Donohue.
“But it’s not about us, it’s about you, your feelings, your joy and your heartbreak as we travel together to Croke Park for the All-Ireland finals.”

There's many points at which stopping reading was a good idea.

It was a culmination of the "marty squad" and Radio 1 that killed it for me.... awful idea. Why not have an extra GAA supplement show on tv ala Sky's soccer Sunday Supplement.

Marty good presenter but the rest bar one are absolutely awful and I'd rather eurovision compiled list of worst songs ever than listen some here being lined up in with greatest respect hardly great gaa pundits or commentators while there would be good on other programmes
I agree totally and won't even listen to one programme

The Tipperary Football Goalkeeper, Evan Comerford, on his debut for the Seniors last Sunday against Waterford saved two penalties, surely this should have been highlighted on the Sunday Game last Sunday night. Would have been a great encouragement for the young goalkeeper just coming up from the under 21 ranks.

As far as I can remember RTE did not show either missed penalty on the sunday game highlights show.

If what you are saying is true and there were 2 penalties saved during the age and RTE in a highlights package decided that 2 penalty saves do not meeet the criteria of being a highlight then that show really has reached a new low.

Yes very disappointing, a penalty save in both halves by a debutant goalkeeper not shown.

Anything that keeps Marty and his scripted "spur-of-the-moment" sound bites away from the commentary box is fine by me.

As for Curran and Donohue......I can't see both of them still being on board come the third Sunday of September.

Tipp for Sam 2015!! Bring on The Kingdom
(tongue in cheek, waiting for abuse)

Hopefully this year Tipp can put in a big performance because the Munster Championship needs a bit of competition outside of Cork v Kerry. Clare might be improving too but still a huge gulf in class.

Tipp and Roscommon are making strides underage, love to see some of the so called weaker counties put it up to the big teams.

Must say that Brendan Cummins did a fine job on radio assisting the commentary on the Limerick V Clare game two weeks ago!

Was wondering why he wasn't on it, didn't he have serious issues a few years ago, hope it's not as bad as it sounds.
