. You can just buy a boat and stay in one spot in a marina, where there's power and a water supply or travel around. You might not have heating etc. But it might be cool or it might be a disaster. Not sure ...

Would you live on a barge? It might mean ongoing work on it. Ireland is not exactly set up for it. The smaller space etc.

But you have a bit of freedom. Would it be mental?

I like the thought in theory.

In practise, I'd probably have small-scale re-runs of Titanic for dreams every night.

I definitely would live on a vessel on the water. The freedom to set it up right in Dublin City centre would be fantastic.

Although potentially not realistic in the next 5 years, it would be great to see a development in the city centre of a proper marina. The one in Grand Canal Basin is very basic.

There'd be a lot of rats anyway. You wouldn't want to be overly squeamish or anal about such things.

The thought of water constantly below the floor would freak me out. I'd be sleeping in a life jacket.

    That's very well thought out.

A friend of mine did it in London. She was working from home her and her partner and their daughter did it. It worked out cheaper especially in London.

I'd love to. Never going to though. It's a nice little idle fantasy to have though.

Read an article one time about a woman who'd started a travelling book shop on a barge in the UK, she kept going on about all the practical issues, the buzz killington

Na, barges are just caravans on water, and if there is two things on earth that don't go together, it's caravans and water.

I'm not sure how they actually do get around that. I think it's no CENTRAL heating rather than no heating.

It's all to be worked out. It's part of my grand plan either live on a barge live in a caravan or run away with the circus.

S'OK. The live-aboards do refer to themselves as aquaknackers. :p

I would, OP. I've spent plenty of time staying on boats. I have friends who raise kids on board. I know one couple who were saving for an apartment at the height of the boom. Every time they had another grand in the bank, apartment prices went up by a grand and a half. They bought their barge with a credit union loan. Since paid off. It's bigger than many of the apartments they were looking at at the time!

Happy where I am for the foreseeable future, but a boat would be a tempting choice if current plans don't work out.

Lots of people living in barges on the Royal and Grand canals moored up by the 12th lock or further down by Leixlip, Celbridge.
Looks livable in the summer months but must be tough in the winter.

    That looks really nice actually.
I think that's the whole thing for a lot of people price etc. Also to start my traveling bookshop /circus!

It's also amenities and how it's set up in Ireland though. I know nothing about marina's.

    :-)

I couldn't find info on rates there. Just how you ask for them to send a brochure.

    But I found this http://www.rentmybarge.com/#!rates/c1xue

    It depends on what season.
