    A ship with 49 people on board has gone missing in the South Atlantic, what is a bit bizarre is that it vanished on the 26th of February and it has only been announced now!
    Taiwanese authorities are asking for help to search for it!

    I saw a new/different Stena vessel coming into Dublin this AM (about 0930 or so). Has the new Superfast (silly name in my books) vessel started up yet or was this coming in to provide cover for one of the existing vessels?

    It should logically follow the Aircraft and Aviation category. Both have a bit of Biz, a bit of Rec, but Motoring and Transport is the best and apt category.

    The skipper of the worlds largest trawler Annelies llena was on trial yesterday and today in Donegal circuit criminal court, charged with illegaly dumping perfectly good fish to keep more larger fish which would fetch a higher price and also having no log book filled . The boat was formely the Atlantic Dawn based in killybegs.

    Two people are dead and another injured after an axe fight between crew members on the Chinese bulk carrier MV Qing May.

    The attack occurred while the Liberia-flagged vessel was sailing near the island of Jolo in the south of the Philippines, and local Coast Guard officials provided assistance early Sunday morning.

    Two Chinese nationals were found dead. They have been identified as Xie Lhichao, a 28-year-old engineer, and Zhang Weenjo, a 35-year-old chief cook. A third man Liao Shiguo, a 49-year-old electrical engineer, suffered from a cut on his head and is believed to have had the axe that caused it still stuck in his head when help arrived.

    It is unclear what caused the argument that lead to the bloody fight, as apparently none of the crew speak English. AFP reports that the suspect is believed to still be hiding on board which is now docked at Zamboanga.

    The 200,000dwt vessel, operated by China’s Foremost group, was travelling from Australia to China when the incident occurred.

    The only time we had any serious trouble in the deep sea company I worked for was with Chinese crew. Poor sod was found hanged in the engine room with a suicide note in his pocket. Thankfully I wasn't on the ship, but it became widely believed that he had accrued serious gambling debts and couldn't pay them off. The suicide was apparently a cover as he was found in a place where it would have been impossible for one person to commit the act alone.

    A Russian submarine may have been responsible for almost capsizing a UK fishing trawler in the Irish Sea, a UK fishing organisation has said.
    The crew of the County Down-based trawler said the nets were snagged and their boat dragged backwards at speed close to the Isle of Man on Wednesday.
    "You cannot always prevent it, but if an incident like this did happen the [Royal Navy] protocols say that the submarine would immediately surface to check on the health and welfare of the people involved and this one did not.

    Silly question but do nets etc nowadays not have markers, gps beacons or similar or are these only on the surface and anything at depth might scare off the fish?

    Russians is it? It's also not a million miles from HM Naval Base Clyde, a major British sub base also used by other allied navies. The truth is the public will never know what vessel and what nationality is responsible, but sure, blame the Russians...

    My sentiments exactly. Could have been the Russians, but could have been anyone else with submarines really. The idea that it could not have been the RN therefore must have been the Russians is a bit mad Ted.

    They have electronics in them to indicate the load of fish taken in the net so they know when to haul the net in without overloading it.

    Yeah, I have doubts myself that it was the Russians too. I guess the main point is that a submarine appears to have been involved and didn't pop it's head up to see if everything was ok.

    I seem to recall in the 90s a trawler being sunk by a submarine, possibly in the Irish sea, but i'm struggling to find a report.

    Regardless, a very scary thing to happen i'm sure.

    Saw an article on the news about the 'Wilson Dublin' and how it is the largest ship to ever dock in Dingle Harbour, Co. Kerry.

    I remember about 20 years ago a Russian Factory ship spent a few months docked in Dingle and to a young lad at the time it seems like the largest ship in the world.

    I was wondering if anyone could help me find out what that Russian ship was called, or even what class of ship it was, and how it compared to the one that docked in Dingle recently?

    MSC Splendida due in Dublin Port on Monday, longest ship to dock in Dublin apparently, 333 metres so won't be able to turn around within the port. Currently docked in Kirkwall.

    I agree with Tabnabs, much better to see the harbour being used for what it was intended, there is no shortage of all day parking options in the area.

    And despite the concerns that passengers would be bussed off on day excursions, no doubt many are, but there are hundreds of them ambling around DL this morning, and anything they do spend is to be welcomed.

    At the coal harbour? I don't think I have EVER seen that parking area full, or even near it.
