    YEAH Aussies!

It was also recognized in France in Jan. Personally i would welcome a universal declaration. France and oz recognized animals as sentient beings with feelings rather than furniture. New Zealand did a few days ago too.

When will Ireland follow? It's about time we did! Buddhism recognizes this.

How can we get our country to take notice???

This concept is central to the philosophy of animals rights. And we all know how badly this are protected here! It would be a big step in the right direction!

    It's not "Austrailia", it's "Australia".

Oh, and it's not Australia, it's New Zealand.

    Just saying.

Off now for some roast chicken for the dinner. Cheers. :P

    animal—
(a)means any live member of the animal kingdom that is—
    (i)a mammal; or
    (ii)a bird; or
    (iii)a reptile; or
    (iv)an amphibian; or
(v)a fish (bony or cartilaginous); or
(vi)any octopus, squid, crab, lobster, or crayfish (including freshwater crayfish); or
(vii)any other member of the animal kingdom which is declared from time to time by the Governor-General, by Order in Council, to be an animal for the purposes of this Act; and
(b)includes any mammalian foetus, or any avian or reptilian pre-hatched young, that is in the last half of its period of gestation or development; and
    (c)includes any marsupial pouch young;

Seems a bit incorrect to class some of the above as sentient.

I actually can't believe that animals would have been denied this status for so long. It's actually just embarrassing for mankind.

Denied what status? The status that they're capable of subjective thought?

I agree that that is indeed the case for some animals, but not all that are classified in the bill I linked. This should not be a prerequisite for basic animal rights though.

No it wasn't, it was an error by the journalist, compounded by another error of yours. Don't be lazy and unthinking.

And don't be cruel to donkeys, either. You'll only hurt their feelings. :D

Don't think the farming/ slaughter community's would agree with the decree

We have a way of treating animals in Ireland that is beyond cruelty ..
I have a dog that could show a few humans about compassion to our fellow beings ..

Mind you the cat next door doesn't see it ..

    Of course they are sentient.

It's what separates them from vegetables. They understand pain and deprivation, comfort and warmth etc.

The acknowledgement that they can feel seems to be novum here, so yes, I think this is quite overdue.

I think it would help in getting animal testing for cosmetics banned. It's frivolous to say the least that it goes on. I never buy products that have been tested this way I know many others don't either.

It doesn't say that "testing on animals has been banned."

It simply refers to "a ban" on testing on animals.

So I'm just wondering..... can anyone confirm the terms and conditions of the ban in question?
