Was not trying to be "smart".

It is cheap and ridiculous to compare the black struggle with gay marriage. And, I wouldn't be too confident that the Black Civil Rights groups would be too crazy to be linked with this issue. When that comparison springs up, there are only so many ways that can be responded to

Whatever religion he was, he was a Minister ; trying to be pedantic I see.

Ah well, the Gay Community, not content with hijacking marriage, they want to link themselves with the Civil Rights Movement; what next? Holocaust ?

I am having difficulty parsing that last sentence. Is it a badly failed attempt at humor, or are you genuinely ignorant of the fact gays got sent to the concentration camps just like the Jews?

That is an incredibly disgusting, foul thing to say. The LGBT community, in particular gay men were rounded up and forced into concentration camps. They had their own special badge and thousands upon thousands died. Whatsmore they were the only group who were reimprisoned following the liberation of the camps. You really ought to apologise for that remark because otherwise you doing little more than holocaust denialism.

Just wondering, have any celebrities come out on the 'No' side?

On the 'Yes' side we've had Chris O'Dowd, Colin Farrell, Hozier, Brian O'Driscoll et al.

Have any celebrities (bar that Tipperary hurler) encouraged people to vote 'No'?
Because, we all know, that if he did, as one might suggest (ala Pat Kenny would say), he could wave good bye to any endorsements or money making adventures (outside his own labour) again.

    Sorry. If who did?

Seems to be, given the paucity of the arguments on display here. Either directly, or the "thought of it" generally.

Is either is, or it is not

THere is no "seems" to be.

    Sorry. If who did?

Any Irish celebrity (not a journalist) come out and say that he was voting no

Oh, I can see the confusion. I made a reference to a person. In no way , shape or form, was I suggesting that the said person had any stance on the matter. THe only reference to that person was a nod to a phrase he would be known to say ('as one might suggest'). I hope that confusion is crystal clear

To any-one bringing the U.S. black citizens fight for civil rights U.S. white citizens had into the fray here, google up on Bayard Rustin, a U.S. black citizen and major figure in that fight. He gave up what should have been his rights to enable MLK and others win the U.S. black civil rights fight.

    What a guy:
Today, blacks are no longer the litmus paper or the barometer of social change. Blacks are in every segment of society and there are laws that help to protect them from racial discrimination. The new "****" are gays.... It is in this sense that gay people are the new barometer for social change.... The question of social change should be framed with the most vulnerable group in mind: gay people.

You think Martin Luther King was a liberal. Okay, bless your little heart :D A Typicaly "god fearing" dude, like many a man and woman of that period.......

The sneering, is not towards King or his wife. It's towards people like ye, trying to high jack a group from the 1960's over issues utterly different to the current one, to suit yer agenda ....

Luther King was born a Baptist and was a Baptist pastor, by the way. While I loathe to use wikiepdia, I thought that was a common fact. Obviously not

    A shur, who knows ?

Golly gosh - you live in a special place where you hear voices that tell you things like Bannasidhe said Martin Luther King Jr was a liberal when the record shows all Bannasidhe said was that Martin Luther King Jr was not the same person as Martin Luther.

That's it. Martin Luther and Martin Luther King Jr were two different people.

You said King was a 'playa' not me.

I don't actually care if he was or wasn't.

You linked to wikipedia to show that King's niece said he wouldn't support SSM having just a few minutes ago responded with some nonsense 'bout ain't no man allow no wooman a speak for him yo'* when you were shown footage of Dr King's wife speaking in favour... WOW... that is some cognitive dissonance...

You really really hate getting caught with your knowledge pants down don't you.

    :D

I have to go walk the dogs now but carry on contradicting yourself and getting things wrong. I do enjoy watching the J.R. ooops I've dug a hole and I can't get out so I will keep digging show.

Bannasidhe , being the typical kind of poster she/he is when they have little to say, was under no illusion as to who I was talking about, at all times. Martin Luther King was a womanizer, a trait that was normal in those days.

    "King was a playa"

Eh, yes, and we both know who I was talking about. Cease pretending to be confused as to who we were talking about.

The record also shows that he / she tried to link MLK to the gay rights movement. Play dumb.

The wikiepedia link was mostly about his life ie he was a baptist , which , tried to correct me on. There was another link from a news report dealing with the views of the niece.

Again, yep, I doubt he would let any woman speak for him

But, sure, since you were dragging other family members into the fray, I thought, why not. ? If you are doing it, it's fair game. Now, instead of acknowledging that it's not a good idea to be using other people (as one poster did with the youtube video) in order to make a point and imply the connection with the two movements, you now start crying about being served with an opinion from another family member

"You really really hate getting caught with your knowledge pants down don't you. "

Eh, you are going to have to run that pass me again. There is a big difference between fact and revisionism. Don't worry , everything has been recorded

Have a horrible feeling in my gut that the NO vote will win. Can see a lot of people coming out with their true opinion from general conversations. Even people like myself in their thirties with every reason to vote YES coming out with the usual weak arguments.

MOD: Oh for the love of god, could the lot of you cop on? There's enough stupidity in the world without drowning everyone in this thread with pedantry and petty swipes to give yourself an unwarranted sense of smugness. The thread is about the SSM referendum. Not feigned shock over deliberately misinterpreted posts.

We're discussing (or at least one of us is) the obvious fact that the wording in the section setting out the presumption of paternity needs to change to accommodate SSM, as it assumes the existence of a husband in every marriage and incoherently refers to applying a balance of probabilities test where paternity is contested.

On the contrary: the law states when a husband is to be presumed the father.

In a same sex marriage, following the letter of this law as written today, the answer will always be "never" (apart from the one corner case I mentioned earlier).

There is no issue with the balance of probabilities standard, as is it is way, way lower than what we've got. Nobody ever lost a case based on the balance of probabilities, like a libel case, because the case was too certain for the balance of probabilities standard.

But this is all beside the point, since we all can see you are a Yes voter arguing for the sake of it.

    What hole will that be,Aloyisious?

Perhaps when you stop intentionally misinterpreting what was said and actually deal with what was said , perhaps you wouldn't be hitting yourself with the handle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,644 ✭✭✭✭Zubeneschamali

I'll give a straight yes or no, and a brief explanation of why.

Both of your fake questions are constructed so that you can answer "No because irrelevant waffle I put into the question which has nothing to do with the referendum question".

How about answering the question you will be asked on the day - Yes or No?

My answer to that one is Yes.

It will probably pass by a very slim margin. Very slim.

I accept that the Moderator is deleting posts.

    But, Let this be posted.

I made no denial of the holocaust or any group who was a victim during that period. As there was no denial, there is no apology forthcoming , as there is no need for one.

I suggest to read what is actually stated, rather than make defamatory remarks.
