E39 E46 BMW excessive oil spray when removed oil filler cap?

    im just wondering can anybody in the know how of these engines { 2.2litre e39 and the 1.8litre e46}, tell me if this is a major problem. i checked out one or two cars over this weekend i was interested in buying and on both occasions while the cars were running i removed the oil filler caps and a good spray of oil came out ??

    Any car I have run with the oil cap opened sprays oil all over the engine bay, was an error on my part leaving it open on oil change, wouldn't think it's a problem. Any reason why you would open it with the engine running?

    I've only seen it happen on diesel cars meself

    timing chain is below the oil cap on my e38 , id imagine some other moving part is below the oil cap so it sprays out quite a bit. id be more worried about no oil spray to be fair.

    This would be normal, you have moving parts with oil thus oil will spray out. If it didn't there would be no need for the cap.

    This was years ago, but I remember someone showing me an engine running with the oil cap off and there wasa very small amount of blue smoke coming out, I think they were explaining how to check if head gasket was gone.



    Might be completly wrong, but I do remember something about taking the cap off while engine was running.
