I have notions all the time.

This morning I had a notion for a fried egg sandwich.

Your wan has awful notions of herself, off to the big smoke for the weekend and staying at the marker hotel, twas far from the marker she was reared, remember her shoveling manure like no tomorrow and the sweat dripping off her.

People who have money and people who have fcuk all offer you tea and dinner when you do work for them.

People with notions wouldn't ask you if you had a mouth on you.

People's insecurity spikes when people around them suddenly appear to be making a better effort at improving themselves or their lives and have higher aspirations. It's a coping mechanism for the lazy, weak and pathetic. This is nothing new. Just laugh at and pity them.

Irish people have a habit of looking down on anyone who does well for themselves. Doing well for yourself is not to be encouraged and so "notions" is a useful way of dissuading such ideas. Anything that doesn't conform to the 'norm' can suggest someone has 'notions'.

"What do you mean you don't want to go to the local Tech? It was good enough for your brother/sister/father"
"What do you mean you don't want to play hurling? It's good enough for your brother/sister/father/county"
"What do you mean you want to study comm-puters? An arts degree was good enough for your brother/sister/father"
"RTE Two?? One television channel was good enough for your brother/sister/father"
    "Rugby?!?"

"Im worried about your son/sister/brother. I think he/she has notions"

    Its not a new phenomenon.

Hardly. However it surely seems to piss some other people off.

I have got the aul 'it's far from prawn sandwiches you were reared' treatment too.

I understand the connotation, I had a poor and abusive upbringing so thats where I belong eh?

Not talking time with people. Not treating others as equals. Arrogance. Self-appreciation is a good quality. Having fun with yourself but being full of yourself is not. People who don't help others. People who don't appreciate help when they get it. People who don't know how to listen. People who take themselves too seriously. People not interested in the rest of the world or other people. People who stick in their own little circle and exclude others. People who try to make others feel excluded. People who don't try to make others feel at home or comfortable in their presence. People who exude coldness and disdain to other people because they think they are better than them. People who can't see how ridiculous they look.

hand in hand with begrudgery then. I always laugh at how people like ronan keating, nicky byrne, conor megregor etc. are demonised because of wealth and success. we love to bring our own back down to earth and the whole ronan cheating thing allowed us to do that in spades. anyone with a bit of money and attention is a ''prick'' and ''stuck up'' and the aul ''notions'', in mcgregors case I think he's just a joker that plays up the image of the cocky athlete stereotype, whilst having a bit of a laugh doing it, he knows the game and plays it well. I find him inoffensive.

They are just annoying. There is a difference. They are inoffensive. But irritating. There is a lack of self awareness and perception. They are not bad people or anything. Just annoying.

Ronan Keating is the only one I know. I can't stand people like him not because he is a bad person or has notions. It's just I hate that type of music and his style etc. I am sure he is a nice person.

I havent heard this word being thrown around but it seems to imply someone that might be opinionated, and I had thought these type of folks either became extinct or emigrated...or just hissed into silence, remember how we did the same to the 'smart arse'?

    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/notion

A notion is an idea, often vague and sometimes fanciful...

Applying for a difficult degree or trying to set up a business e.g.

Dunno if this counts as a "notion". But my friends mam calls bus lanes "QBC's".

    Quality Bus Corridors.

She has Hyacinth Bucket syndrome at times, as I call it.

When you rock the boat over?

In fairness the directions are very clear, you're supposed to:

rock the boat, don't tip the boat over ...

The only sane response to "She has notions" is "away with her."

To be fair to her, its not as if she coined the expression herself. Thats their official name
